Copper-mediated oxidative deconstruction of polyethylene terephthalate via photoinduced ligand-to-metal charge transfer.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is widely used in daily life due to its excellent properties. However, efficient recycling of PET is crucial to reduce environmental pollution and dependence on fossil resources. The existing chemical recycling methods primarily focus on activating ester carbonyl groups in molecules, often requiring excess nucleophilic reagents, high temperature and pressure, and costly metal catalysts. It is highly challenging to achieve efficient chemical recycling of PET under mild conditions. In this work, we developed a novel PET photocatalytic oxidative depolymerization m

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) nanoplastics target carbonic anhydrase and alter physiological functions in Daphnia magna.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) nanoplastics are increasingly recognized as relevant contaminants in freshwater ecosystems, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying their sublethal biological effects remain poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate whether true-to-life polyethylene terephthalate (PET) nanoplastics, generated from post-consumer PET bottles, affect carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity in Daphnia magna and whether such molecular alteration is associated with physiological dysfunction at the organism level. Label-free PET nanoplastics were generated from post-consume

Study on the Decontamination of Contaminants in Polyethylene Terephthalate by Supercritical Carbon Dioxide: From the Perspective of Molecular Descriptors.

The escalating issue of global plastic pollution necessitates the development of efficient and sustainable recycling technologies, particularly for producing safe, food-contact-grade recycled plastics. Within a circular economy framework, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) holds significant promise due to its excellent recyclability. However, contaminants introduced throughout its lifecycle pose a major challenge, and conventional decontamination methods often involve high energy consumption, thermal degradation risks, or chemical residues. Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) emerges as a promi

Polyethylene terephthalate micro-/nanoplastics suppress SAT1-dependent ferroptosis in triple-negative breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: The potential association between micro-/nanoplastics and cancer has raised increasing concerns. However, research focusing specifically on breast cancer (BC), and particularly on triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), remains limited, leading to a critical gap in current knowledge. This study seeks to explore potential correlative effects of micro-/nanoplastic exposure on TNBC progression. METHODS: We employed scanning electron microscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy, and pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to characterize micro-/nanoplastics in BC tissues. Moreover, spati

In Silico Optimization of a Bifunctional Lipase-Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) Hydrolase for Enhanced PET and Lipid Hydrolysis.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and lipid-rich waste pose urgent environmental challenges that need multifunctional biocatalysts. LipMRD9, a lidless lipase with natural PETase activity, exemplifies such a scaffold. Here, we used an integrated approach combining automated in silico mutagenesis (AsiteDesign), Protein Energy Landscape Exploration (PELE), and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, structure-guided rational engineering, and bioprospecting of homologous sequences to improve the dual lipase-PETase activity of LipMRD9. Computational analyses pinpointed mutational hotspots extending the

Exploring the Potential Mechanism of Polyethylene Terephthalate Associated Cardiotoxicity through Network Toxicology and Molecular Docking.

As polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is one of the most widely used plastics and a pervasive environmental contaminant, growing evidence links micro/nanoplastic exposure to cardiovascular dysfunction; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here we aimed to explore the potential cardiotoxicity of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) using an integrative computational strategy combining network toxicology, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics simulations. This fragment-based approach examined the interactions between PET monomers, terephthalic acid (TPA) and ethylene glycol (EG) with

Product Oriented Upcycling of Waste Polyethylene Terephthalate Plastic and Carbon Dioxide via Decoupled Electrolysis.

End-of-life plastics and carbon dioxide (CO2) are anthropogenic waste carbon resources; it is imperative to develop efficient technologies to convert them to value-added products. Here we report the upcycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic and CO2 toward valuable potassium diformate, terephthalic acid, and H2 fuel via decoupled electrolysis. This product-oriented process is realized by two electrolyzers: (1) a solid-state-electrolyte based CO2 electrolyzer and (2) a solid-polymer-electrolyte-based PET electrolyzer. Using a bismuth-based catalyst, the CO2 electrolyzer showed more t

Control of Nanoparticle Size of Intrinsically Fluorescent PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) Particles Produced Through Nanoprecipitation.

Plastics are widely produced due to their stability and ease of manufacturing, but many of them quickly become a waste, breaking down into microplastics and nanoplastics. While methods for the identification and characterization of plastic particles are well consolidated, the small size of nanoplastics presents challenges for their detection and analysis. Furthermore, due to the difficulty of identifying nanoplastics, analytical studies concerning their effect on cells and a comprehensive spectroscopic characterization are still lacking. In this paper, we overcome this obstacle by synthesizing

One-pot Hydrogenolysis of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) to p-xylene over CuZn/Al2O3 Catalyst.

Chemical upcycling of plastic wastes into valuable chemicals is a promising strategy for resolving plastic pollution, but economically viable methods currently are still lacking. Here, we report one-pot hydrogenolysis of PET plastic into p-xylene with an excellent yield (99.8 %) over a robust non-precious Cu-based catalyst, CuZn/Al2O3, in the absence of alcohol solvents. The presence of Zn species promotes the dispersion of Cu0 and increases the ratio of Cu+/Cu0, whereas the synergistic effect of Cu0 and Cu+ leads to a superior performance in the conversion of PET. The combination of GC-MS, 13

Late Disruption of a Polyethylene Terephthalate Aortic Graft 30 Years after Initial Graft Placement.

A 71 year old male who had undergone extra-anatomic bypass grafting between the ascending aorta and the thoraco-abdominal aorta at 41 years of age for aortic coarctation was admitted with back pain and dyspnea. A 16 mm Cooley double velour knitted polyethylene terephthalate (PET) graft was used in the initial operation in 1983. Computed tomography showed disruption of the initial PET graft perforating the right atrium, and a pseudoaneurysm at the distal anastomosis. The patient was in acute cardiac failure because of left to right shunting. A two stage operation was performed. The first stage

Mechanical evaluation of newly developed mouthpiece using polyethylene terephthalate glycol for transoral robotic surgery.

Transoral robotic surgery (TORS), performed with the da Vinci surgical system (da Vinci), has been classified as a surgical approach for benign and malignant lesions of the oral cavity and laryngopharynx. It provides several unique advantages, which include a three-dimensional magnified view, ability to see and work around curves or angles, and the availability of two or three robotic arms. At present, however, the da Vinci surgical system does not provide haptic feedback. The potential risks specific to the transoral use of the da Vinci include tooth injury, mucosal laceration, ocular injury,

Highly selective depolymerization of polyethylene terephthalate plastic via Au/attapulgite dual-site synergy.

The chemical recycling of waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) into high-value terephthalic acid (TPA) under mild conditions remains a significant challenge. Herein, we construct a dual-active-site Au/ATP catalyst via electronic metal-support interactions (EMSI) by supporting Au on inexpensive attapulgite (ATP). Under optimal conditions (200 °C, 1 MPa Ar, 4 h), this catalyst achieves near-complete conversion of PET with a terephthalic acid (TPA) yield of 91.76 ± 1.65%, and is also effective for actual waste plastic bottle flakes. The EMSI stabilizes Au nanoparticles, modulates Lewis acidity

Degradation of polyethylene terephthalate bottle fragments in the marine environment: An empirical study of structural and chemical changes.

Relatively little is known about the degradation pathways and impacts of plastic litter on the seafloor. In this study, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle fragments (n = 70) have been retrieved from kelp deposits washed up after storm activity and analysed by a range of visual and spectroscopic techniques. Fragments of various colours consisted of either side walls, sometimes containing the cap, or petaloid bases. Clear samples often exhibited oxidative yellowing and bases were sometimes locally stained or fouled. Stereomicroscopy revealed heterogeneous abrasion, entrapment of silt, and b

Visible light-triggered co-upcycling of polypropylene and polyethylene terephthalate using waste chlorinated solvents.

The chemical incompatibility of mixed plastics poses a fundamental barrier to their circularity. Polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), among the highest-volume manufactured polyolefin and polyester, are particularly difficult to process together due to their divergent structures and stabilities. Here, we demonstrate a synergistic photo-induced strategy that concurrently converts both polymers into valuable products by employing waste chlorinated solvents as a sustainable chlorine radical source. Under visible-light irradiation, chlorine radicals generated in situ from these

Hepatotoxic Mechanisms of Polyethylene Terephthalate Microplastics Revealed by Network Toxicology, Molecular Docking, and In Vivo Validation.

Polyethylene terephthalate microplastics (PET-MPs) are emerging environmental pollutants, but the molecular mechanisms underlying their hepatotoxicity remain poorly understood. Here, we combined network toxicology with experimental validation to investigate how PET-MPs induce liver injury. In silico, we investigated the PET-repeating unit as the molecular basis for target interactions. We identified 59 overlapping genes between 157 putative PET-MPs targets and 1693 liver injury-associated genes. Protein-protein interaction analysis revealed six hub genes (AKT1, PIK3CA, PIK3CB, PIK3CD, PIK3R1,

Assessing the impact of sub-chronic polyethylene terephthalate nanoplastic exposure on male reproductive health in mice.

The widespread use of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in food and beverage packaging raises concerns about its potential health effects, particularly when PET-derived nanoplastics (PET-NPs) are released into the environment. This study investigates the reproductive toxicity of PET-NPs in male mice. Mice were exposed to PET-NPs at doses of 0.1 mg/day and 0.5 mg/day for 28 days, and the testes index, sperm count, sperm morphology, Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) production, DNA integrity, histopathology, and spermatogenesis were evaluated. PET-NP exposure resulted in a significant decrease in spe

Adsorption behavior of Cu(II) on UV-aged polyethylene terephthalate and polypropylene microplastics in aqueous solution.

Plastics are widely used across various applications from packing to commercial products. Once discarded, they were subjected to environmental stresses, causing them to degrade into microplastics (MPs). These small, invisible pollutants pose a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems, gradually compromising the resilience and vitality of the natural environment. Moreover, MPs will act as carriers for other contaminants, for example, heavy metals (HMs). Although many studies have explored MPs and HMs independently, their combined behavior and interactions remain poorly understood. Understanding

Adjustable Upcycling of Polyethylene Terephthalate to Biodegradable Polymer Monomers by Mn-Catalyzed Solvent Switching Strategy.

Waste plastics represent a new resource for the chemical industry. In this study, we demonstrate a solvent-switching strategy to upcycle waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) into monomer terephthalic acid (TPA) and key bulk feedstocks for biodegradable polymers, such as lactic acid (LA) or glycolic acid (GA). PET undergoes rapid and mild depolymerization into its monomers TPA and ethylene glycol (EG) under the catalysis of a manganese complex. When methanol (MeOH) is used as the solvent, it undergoes selective dehydrogenative coupling with in situ generated EG, efficiently yielding TPA and L

Differential sensitivity of hemocyte subpopulations (Mytilus edulis) to aged polyethylene terephthalate micro- and nanoplastic particles.

Bivalve hemocytes, particularly granulocytes and hyalinocytes, play a crucial role in cell-mediated immunity. However, their interactions with aged plastic particles, exhibiting altered properties that more closely resemble those in natural environments, remain largely underexplored. This study assesses the differential responses of hemocyte subpopulations (Mytilus edulis) to chemically aged polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastic (MPs) and nanoplastic (NPs) particles across multiple cellular effect endpoints. Particle characteristics were analyzed using Single Particle Extinction and Sc

Influence of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastic on selected active substances in the intramural neurons of the porcine duodenum.

BACKGROUND: Currently, society and industry generate huge amounts of plastics worldwide. The ubiquity of microplastics is obvious, but its impact on the animal and human organism remains not fully understood. The digestive tract is one of the first barriers between pathogens and xenobiotics and a living organism. Its proper functioning is extremely important in order to maintain homeostasis. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of microplastic on enteric nervous system and histological structure of swine duodenum. The experiment was carried out on 15 sexually immature gilts, appro
