Tobacco use is a significant public health concern in rural India. This case study was conducted in a village of the Jodhpur district in Rajasthan, India. The high prevalence and patterns of tobacco use among the villagers was identified by a situational analysis in the OPD and through household visits, shopkeeper surveys, focus group discussion with health workers, and by engaging with community members, local leaders, and health workers. A general lack of adherence to Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) rules in public places, schools, and points of sale, as well as a gap in aw

OBJECTIVE: Disparities in tobacco use persist despite successful policies reducing use within the United States. In particular, the prevalence of tobacco use in rural and certain minority communities is significantly higher compared to that of their counterparts. In this work, we examine the impact of rurality, mental health, and racial discrimination on tobacco use.
METHODS: Data come from the 2003 California Health Interview Survey (n = 42,044). Modified Poisson regression models were adjusted for age, sex, race/ethnicity, birth origin, education, income, insurance, and marital status.

BACKGROUND: Diversion programs are considered alternatives to the arrest and incarceration of non-violent drug offenders, including those found in possession of smaller amounts of cannabis in states with prohibitive laws. Despite the progressive nature of such programs, the inability to complete diversion program requirements can often result in greater involvement with the criminal justice system than traditional case adjudication. Few studies have evaluated racial group differences in cannabis diversion program completion.
METHODS: The current study examined a sample of 8323 adult participa

BACKGROUND: This paper describes the development of an urban adolescent text messaging tobacco cessation intervention and preliminary findings from a randomized, controlled trial. The authors successfully adapted a face-to-face intervention into a personalized, automated, and interactive 5-day texting protocol.
METHODS: Respondent-driven sampling was used beginning at a community substance abuse facility. Seventy-two tobacco-dependent adolescents were randomized into an automated computer texting program that delivered either the experimental condition of 30 motivational interviewing- and soc

The Hispanic/Latino health paradox is the well-known health advantage seen across the Hispanic/Latino racial category in the US. However, this racial category collapses several distinct ethnic groups with varying spatial distributions. Certain populations, such as Dominicans and Cubans, are concentrated in specific areas, compared to more dispersed groups such as Mexicans. Historical peculiarities have brought these populations into contact with specific types of environmental exposures. This paper takes a first step towards unraveling these diverse exposure profiles by estimating how exposure

During a mass media campaign accompanying the launch of the Maximum Diva Woman's Condom (WC) in Lusaka, Zambia, a cluster-randomized evaluation was implemented to measure the added impact of a peer-led interpersonal communication (IPC) intervention on the awareness and uptake of the new female condom (FC). The WC and mass media campaign were introduced simultaneously in 40 urban wards in April 2016; half of the wards were randomly assigned to the treatment (IPC intervention) with cross-sectional surveys conducted before (n = 2,364) and one year after (n = 2,430) the start of the intervention.

Background Cardiovascular conditions are common in US Army and civilian populations. The recently developed concept of ideal cardiovascular health provides a new approach to evaluating population cardiovascular status. Methods and Results We defined a cohort of 263 430 active duty Army personnel, aged 17 to 64 years, who completed a 2012 physical examination and a corresponding subset of the noninstitutionalized, civilian US population, who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey ( NHANES ) 2011 to 2012 cycle. We compared 4 cardiovascular health metrics (current sm

OBJECTIVES: Steatosis, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and fibrosis/cirrhosis represent a spectrum of fatty liver disease. The ultrasound fatty liver indicator (US-FLI) evaluates ultrasound (US) features to identify stages of fatty liver disease. We hypothesized that US features could be independent predictors of NASH and that the US-FLI differentiates steatosis from NASH in the average obese population.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 208 patients with normal (n = 14), steatotic (n = 89), and NASH (n = 105) livers was performed. Liver/biliary disease and a history of alcohol intake

Cancer epidemiology, biomarkers & prevention : a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research, cosponsored by the American Society of Preventive Oncology2024eng
BACKGROUND: The Hispanic population is the second largest racial/ethnic group in the United States, consisting of multiple distinct ethnicities. Ethnicity-specific variations in cancer mortality may be attributed to countries of birth, so we aimed to understand differences in cancer mortality among disaggregated Hispanics by nativity (native- or foreign-born vs. US-born) over 15 years.
METHODS: A total of 228,197 Hispanic decedents (Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Central or South American) with cancer-related deaths from US death certificates (2003-2017) were analyzed. Seven cancers that c

BACKGROUND: Homelessness is a significant issue affecting the general US population. Two subsets of the population overrepresented in the US homeless population are justice involved individuals and Veterans. However, relatively little research has addressed alleviating homelessness in justice-involved Veterans (JIV). One direction for addressing homelessness in this population is facilitating employment.
OBJECTIVE: This study examined differences in housing and employment outcomes between homeless JIV enrolled in 2 different vocational rehabilitation conditions.
METHODS: This study evaluates

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the leading causes of mortality among Hispanics/Latinos residing in the United States (US), yet despite the rapid growth of this diverse population, there has been a dearth of objective, comprehensive data on prevalence of risk factors for CVD and other chronic diseases. The Hispanic Community Health Study/SOL) is the largest and most comprehensive cohort study to date/SOL) was initiated to address this gap in knowledge. This article reviews existing research on CVD risk factors among Hispanic/Latino adults of diverse background residing in the US, compar

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common disease. Its epidemiology has been evaluated previously, mostly in regional populations or in working groups, with an incidence between 1.5 and 3.5 per 1,000 person-years. We studied this diagnosis in the US military population, with the hypothesis that this young population would have a lower incidence of CTS than previously reported in general populations. The Defense Medical Epidemiology Database notes all medical encounters for all US military personnel and maintains the number of all personnel on active duty each year. We queried the database using

BACKGROUND: Despite the progress made in managing HIV, the mortality trends among general population in the US remains understudied. Our aim is to analyse the trends in HIV-related mortality among US residents by demographic characteristics and association with social vulnerability index (SVI).
METHODS: We abstracted national mortality data from the multiple cause of death files in the CDC WONDER database. The ICD-10 Codes (B20-B24) were used to identify HIV deaths among US population from 1999 to 2023. Trends in age-adjusted mortality rate (AAMR) were assessed using Joinpoint regression anal

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound (US) therapy improves symptoms in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) patients. Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) uses acoustic energy to determine its clinical effects, as US-therapy does.
AIM: The aim of this study was to compare the short-term efficacy of US and ESWT on mild and moderate CTS.
STUDY DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial.
SETTING: University outpatient service.
POPULATION: Twenty-five patients with mild to moderate CTS, for a total of 42 wrists.
METHODS: patients were randomized to receive US, cryo-US or ESWT, and were evaluated for pain and function

AIMS: To assess the costs associated with sleep symptoms among patients with fibromyalgia (FM).
PATIENTS & METHODS: Patients reporting physician-diagnosed FM from the National Health and Wellness Survey were categorized into three groups based on the number of sleep symptoms reported: two or more sleep symptoms (n = 1353), one sleep symptom (n = 574) and no sleep symptoms (n = 269). Annual direct and indirect costs were compared among the groups controlling for relevant confounders.
RESULTS: After adjusting for demographic and health characteristics, patients with FM with one, two or more sl

A rough estimate of the incidence rates (IR) of human leukaemia subtypes is provided for Ibadan, a large urban centre in the south-western rain-forest area of Nigeria. In view of the inavailability of recent census figures, the current population sizes of various 5-year age groups were projected from those of the last reliable census held in 1963, using various recommendations from national and international bodies on population changes in the area. On comparing the IR for the leukaemia subtypes in Ibadan subjects with those of Black and White Americans, we found no striking difference in chro

BACKGROUND: An understudied, yet important area of youth development research is the examination of how place affects critical psychosocial processes such as identity formation, problem solving, emotional regulation, and in particular with adolescents, belongingness, autonomy, social competency, and behavioral health. A growing spatially informed literature indicates that youth interact with meaningful places as environmental strategies, shaping developmental trajectories related to behavioral health.
OBJECTIVES: The objective is to investigate the relationship between place preference and he
