Demographic compensation maintains shrub population growth in a grazed desert steppe.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Grazing is a pervasive disturbance in dryland grasslands, yet its effects on shrub populations remain difficult to pred … lity and reproductive output, and used stochastic integral projection models to estimate stochastic population growth rate (λs). We further used stochastic elasticity analyses and stochastic life table response experiments (LTREs) to identify the vital rates and temporal components underlying treatment differences in λs. KEY RESULTS: Grazing increased survival and …

Fetal growth trajectories and neonatal outcomes: A French population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: This study assesses whether fetal growth trajectories are associated with neonatal outcomes. METHODS: The study population included 8537 singleton liveborn infants from the 2021 French National Perinatal Survey. Fetal growth trajectories were assessed between second and third trimester routine ultrasounds and between the third trimester ultrasound and birth, and classified for each period as constant (C, fetal weight variation <±1 standard deviation [SD]), accelerated (A, ≥ 1 SD), or declining (D, ≤ -1 SD). Seven combined trajectory groups were defined over both periods: CC, AC, CA

Plant defences limit herbivore population growth by changing predator-prey interactions.

Plant quality and predators are important factors affecting herbivore population growth, but how they interact to regulate herbivore populations is not well understood. We manipulated jasmonate-induced plant resistance, exposure to the natural predator community and herbivore density to test how these factors jointly and independently affect herbivore population growth. On low-resistance plants, the predator community was diverse and abundant, promoting high predator consumption rates. On high-resistance plants, the predator community was less diverse and abundant, resulting in low predator co…

Trophic interactions and population growth rates: describing patterns and identifying mechanisms.

While the concept of population growth rate has been of central importance in the development of the theory of population dynamics, few empirical studies consider the intrinsic growth rate in detail, let alone how it may vary within and between populations of the same species. In an attempt to link theory with data we take two approaches. First, we address the question 'what growth rate patterns does theory predict we should see in time-series?' The models make a number of predictions, which in general are supported by a comparative study between time-series of harvesting data from 352 red gro…

[Growth of Balantidium coli populations under in vivo and in vitro conditions].

Trophozoites of Balantidium coli were isolated from the pig's caecum and cultivated in vitro. Pigs were divided into two groups: one with the acute balantidiosis and the second--with the asymptomatic balantidiosis. In the first case the biotic potential of protozoans turned out to be higher (the most intensive divisions occurred 24 hours after the second passage). Protozoans isolated from pigs with the asymptomatic balantidiosis had lower biotic potential (the most intensive divisions occurred 24 hours after the third passage). This fact indicates the differentiation of the investigated popula

Epidermal growth factor and basic fibroblast growth factor: effects on an overlapping population of neocortical neurons in vitro.

Epidermal growth factor (EGF) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) have trophic effects on rat neocortical neurons in vitro. Concentration-response studies reveal that EGF maximally stimulates neuronal survival and process outgrowth at approximately 10 ng/ml, while the maximal effect of bFGF is seen at 10-30 ng/ml. Treatment with maximal concentrations of bFGF results in cultures containing a greater number of neurons with long processes, as well as greater branching of processes, than does treatment with EGF. When EGF and bFGF are added together to cultures the effects are not additive.

Growth, instability and future outlook of livestock population and products in Bangladesh.

In the changing agri-food system, livestock play an important role, providing not only protein and micronutrients but also organic fertilizers, employment, and women's empowerment in many developing countries including Bangladesh. Reliable forecasting of livestock populations and products is necessary to inform policy decisions related to food security, supply, demand, and imports and exports, as well as self-sufficiency goals and associated inter- and intra-regional trade opportunities. However, robust long-term projections for livestock systems remain limited in the literature. Therefore, th

Diet quality limits summer growth of field vole populations.

Marked variation occurs in both seasonal and multiannual population density peaks of northern European small mammal species, including voles. The availability of dietary proteins is a key factor limiting the population growth of herbivore species. The objective of this study is to investigate the degree to which protein availability influences the growth of increasing vole populations. We hypothesise that the summer growth of folivorous vole populations is positively associated with dietary protein availability. A field experiment was conducted over a summer reproductive period in 18 vegetated…

Association of the hepatocyte growth factor gene with keratoconus in an Australian population.

PURPOSE: A previous study has indicated suggestive association of the hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) gene with Keratoconus. We wished to assess this association in an independent Caucasian cohort as well as assess its association with corneal curvature. PARTICIPANTS: Keratoconus patients were recruited from private and public clinics in Melbourne, Australia. Non-keratoconic individuals were identified from the Genes in Myopia (GEM) study from Australia. A total of 830 individuals were used for the analysis including 157 keratoconic and 673 non keratoconic subjects. METHODS: Tag single nucleo

Growth of the human lens in the Indian adult population: preliminary observations.

CONTEXT: The eye lens grows throughout life by the addition of new cells inside the surrounding capsule. How this growth affects the properties of the lens is essential for understanding disorders such as cataract and presbyopia. AIMS: To examine growth of the human lens in the Indian population and compare this with the growth in Western populations by measuring in vitro dimensions together with wet and dry weights. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: The study was conducted at the research wing of a tertiary eye care center in South India and the study design was prospective. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Lens

Effect of population density on growth and development of Taenia hydatigena in dogs.

Groups of puppies were infected with either one, five, 10, 20 or 40 cysticerci of Taenia hydatigena and necropsied 70 days later. The number of worms recovered from each group was proportional to the number of cysticerci fed. Individual weights of worms decreased significantly with increasing numbers. The lengths of worms and relative numbers of pregravid and gravid proglottids also decreased with increasing population density. Gravid segments were present on some worms at all population densities.

Cross-population analysis of the growth of long bones and the os coxae of three Early Medieval Austrian populations.

Inter-population variability in long-bone and pelvic-bone growth during the Early Medieval period is examined. The materials comprise four archaeological populations: two Slavonic (Gars-Thunau, Zwentendorf, Austria, 10th-century AD), one Avar (Zwölfaxing, Austria, 8th-century AD), and one Anglo-Saxon (Raunds, England, 10th-century AD). Bone measurements are analyzed against dental age estimates in order to assess inter-population differences in growth rates for long-bone and os coxae bone dimensions. Growth curves of the upper and lower extremities of additional archaeological populations and

Ageing affecting the Americas?: exploring the growth direction: the relationship between the elderly population and economic growth in the American context.

The main aim of this study is to explore the relationship between the elderly population and economic growth in 25 North and South American countries use annual secondary data from 1961 to 2021. Instead of focusing on the conditional mean, this study tests for Granger causality in the entire conditional distribution of the elderly population and economic growth through wavelet coherence analysis. The study findings indicated a unidirectional Granger causality running from per capita gross domestic product (GDP) to the elderly population for Bolivia, Colombia, Guyana, Peru and Puerto Rico and a

When population growth intensifies intergroup competition, female colobus monkeys free-ride less.

Intergroup aggression often results in the production of public goods, such as a safe and stable social environment and a home range containing the resources required to survive and reproduce. We investigate temporal variation in intergroup aggression in a growing population of colobus monkeys (Colobus vellerosus) to ask a novel question: "Who stepped-up to produce these public goods when doing so became more difficult?". Both whole-group encounters and male incursions occurred more frequently as the population grew. Males and females were both more likely to participate in whole-group encount

Numerical modelling of label-structured cell population growth using CFSE distribution data.

BACKGROUND: The flow cytometry analysis of CFSE-labelled cells is currently one of the most informative experimental techniques for studying cell proliferation in immunology. The quantitative interpretation and understanding of such heterogenous cell population data requires the development of distributed parameter mathematical models and computational techniques for data assimilation. METHODS AND RESULTS: The mathematical modelling of label-structured cell population dynamics leads to a hyperbolic partial differential equation in one space variable. The model contains fundamental parameters
