In view of the importance of a prebiotic source of high energy phosphates, we have investigated a number of potentially prebiotic processes to produce condensed phosphates from orthophosphate and cyclic trimetaphosphate from tripolyphosphate. The reagents investigated include polymerizing nitriles, acid anhydrides, lactones, hexamethylene tetramine and carbon suboxide. A number of these processes give substantial yields of pyrophosphate from orthophosphate and trimetaphosphate from tripolyphosphate. Although these reactions may have been applicable in local areas, they are not sufficiently rob

Adenine plays an essential role in replication in all known living systems today, and is prominent in many other aspects of biochemistry. It occurs among the products of oligomerization of HCN. These circumstances have stimulated the idea that adenine was a component in a replication system that was present at the start of life. Such replicators have included not only RNA, but also a number of simpler RNA-like alternatives which utilize a simpler backbone. Despite these encouraging indicators, a consideration of the chemical properties of adenine reveals reasons that disfavor its participation

It is widely held that there was a phosphate compound in prebiotic chemistry that played the role of adenosine triphosphate and that the first living organisms had ribose-phosphate in the backbone of their genetic material. However, there are no known efficient prebiotic synthesis of high-energy phosphates or phosphate esters. We review the occurrence of phosphates in Nature, the efficiency of the volcanic synthesis of P4O10, the efficiency of polyphosphate synthesis by heating phosphate minerals under geological conditions, and the use of high-energy organic compounds such as cyanamide or hyd

Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, a major butyrate-producing gut commensal with anti-inflammatory activity, is extremely oxygen-sensitive, limiting its use as a probiotic. Dietary prebiotics may enhance its growth and resilience, thereby influencing host immune responses. This study examined how distinct classes of prebiotics including oligosaccharides (fructooligosaccharides, arabinoxylan), nondigestible polysaccharides (inulin, pectin, resistant starch, golden kiwi fiber), and the vitamin riboflavin affect the growth kinetics, bile tolerance, and immunomodulatory properties of F. prausnitzii. Do…

The objectives of this article are to understand the effects of stressors (nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug, exercise, and pregnancy) and components in the diet, specifically prebiotics and probiotics, on intestinal barrier function. Stressors generally reduce barrier function, and these effects can be reversed by supplements such as zinc or glutamine that are among the substances that enhance the barrier. Other dietary factors in the diet that improve the barrier are vitamins A and D, tryptophan, cysteine, and fiber; by contrast, ethanol, fructose, and dietary emulsifiers increase permeabil…

Amaranth, quinoa, and buckwheat, known as pseudocereals, have been consumed since ancient times and are considered sacred in most cultures. Their grains can be used as cereals for breakfast or mixed with other grains in meals and their health-enhancing effects have been investigated more in recent years. They have an antioxidant effect and their nutrient profiles are enriched with processing techniques such as sprouting and fermentation. Their suitability to different processing techniques and the rapid increase in microbiota researches highlighted the probiotic/prebiotic effects of pseudocere

BACKGROUND: Only recently the concept of prebiotics has been introduced in oral health. Few potential oral prebiotics have already been identified in dual species competition assays, showing a stimulatory effect on beneficial bacteria and by this suppressing the outgrowth of pathogenic species. This study aimed to validate the effect of previously identified potential prebiotic substrates on multispecies cultures by shifting the biofilm composition towards a more beneficial species dominated microbiota.
METHODS: A chemostat culture containing 14 model oral bacterial species was used to grow b…

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth is common in intestinal failure. Its occurrence relates to alterations in intestinal anatomy, motility, and gastric acid secretion. Its presence may contribute to symptoms, mucosal injury, and malnutrition. Relationships between bacterial overgrowth and systemic sepsis are of potential importance in the intestinal failure patient because the direct translocation of bacteria across the intestinal epithelium may contribute to systemic sepsis: a phenomenon that has been well established in experimental animal models. The accurate diagnosis of bacterial overgr

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Prebiotics, which are non-digestible compounds that selectively modulate gut microbiota, are recognized for their potential to promote host health. Although their bifidogenic effect is well documented, a systematic synthesis of how this microbial modulation translates into clinical gastrointestinal (GI) and metabolic outcomes across diverse populations is needed. This review aims to integrate mechanistic insights with clinical evidence to elucidate the pathway from prebiotic structures to tangible health benefits.
METHODS: This comprehensive narrative review details the…

Dietary fiber (DF) is one type of carbohydrate that cannot be digested by the gastrointestinal tract. It is widely recognized as an essential ingredient for health due to its remarkable prebiotic properties. Studies have shown that DF is important in the management of metabolic diseases, such as obesity and diabetes, by regulating the balance of gut microbiota and slowing down the absorption of glucose. It is worth noting that patients with metabolic diseases might suffer from intestinal dysfunction (such as constipation), which is triggered by factors such as the disease itself or medication.
