SBC-SHAP: Increasing the Accessibility and Interpretability of Machine Learning Algorithms for Sepsis Prediction.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that is one of the major causes of death worldwide. Early detection of sepsis is required for fast initialization of an appropriate therapy. Complete blood count data containing information about white blood cells, platelets, hemoglobin, red blood cells, and mean corpuscular volume could serve as early indicators. However, previous approaches are limited by their interpretability (i.e., investigating the influence of feature values on individual predictions) and accessibility (i.e., easy accessibility for clinicians without programming experti

Machine Learning Algorithms Versus Classical Regression Models in Pre-Eclampsia Prediction: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Machine learning (ML) approaches are an emerging alternative for healthcare risk prediction. We aimed to synthesise the literature on ML and classical regression studies exploring potential prognostic factors and to compare prediction performance for pre-eclampsia. RECENT FINDINGS: From 9382 studies retrieved, 82 were included. Sixty-six publications exclusively reported eighty-four classical regression models to predict variable timing of onset of pre-eclampsia. Another six publications reported purely ML algorithms, whilst another 10 publications reported ML algorithms an

Prediction of gait recovery using machine learning algorithms in patients with spinal cord injury.

With advances in artificial intelligence, machine learning (ML) has been widely applied to predict functional outcomes in clinical medicine. However, there has been no attempt to predict walking ability after spinal cord injury (SCI) based on ML. In this situation, the main purpose of this study was to predict gait recovery after SCI at discharge from an acute rehabilitation facility using various ML algorithms. In addition, we explored important variables that were related to the prognosis. Finally, we attempted to suggest an ML-based decision support system (DSS) for predicting gait recovery

Prediction of postoperative final degree and recurrence of pectus excavatum using machine learning algorithms.

BACKGROUND: Chest wall re-depression after bar removal (BR) in pectus excavatum (PE) is insufficiently investigated. However, it is not easy to investigate chest wall re-depression due to its multifactorial characteristics. Herein, we investigated chest wall re-depression after BR using machine learning algorithms. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first study of chest wall re-depression after BR using machine learning algorithms. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 199 consecutive subjects who underwent both minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum (MIRPE) and BR at a single hos

Prediction of intracranial pressure crises after severe traumatic brain injury using machine learning algorithms.

OBJECTIVE: Avoiding intracranial hypertension after traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a foundation of neurocritical care, to minimize secondary brain injury related to elevated intracranial pressure (ICP). However, this approach at best is reactive to episodes of intracranial hypertension, allowing for periods of elevated ICP before therapies can be initiated. Accurate prediction of ICP crises before they occur would permit clinicians to implement preventive strategies, minimize total time with ICP above threshold, and potentially avoid secondary injury. The objective of this study was to develo

Machine Learning Algorithms for Risk Prediction of Severe Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease in Children.

The identification of indicators for severe HFMD is critical for early prevention and control of the disease. With this goal in mind, 185 severe and 345 mild HFMD cases were assessed. Patient demographics, clinical features, MRI findings, and laboratory test results were collected. Gradient boosting tree (GBT) was then used to determine the relative importance (RI) and interaction effects of the variables. Results indicated that elevated white blood cell (WBC) count > 15 × 109/L (RI: 49.47, p < 0.001) was the top predictor of severe HFMD, followed by spinal cord involvement (RI: 26.62, p < 0.0

ADMETPred: a high-throughput ADMET prediction platform integrating multi-model algorithms and interpretable substructure identification.

The prediction of absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity (ADMET) properties plays a critical role in early-stage drug discovery. While artificial intelligence (AI) has demonstrated transformative potential in revolutionizing this field, existing computational tools remain constrained by limitations in throughput, interpretability, and immobilized modeling frameworks. To address these challenges, we developed ADMETPred, an innovative platform that integrates machine learning and graph neural networks to deliver rapid, accurate, and comprehensive ADMET profiling. Prediction of the risk of diabetic foot from corneal nerve images using deep learning algorithms.

AIMS: We aimed to develop a deep learning algorithm (DLA) for predicting the risk categories of diabetic foot using corneal nerve images. METHODS: A total of 23,550 images from 942 eyes of 471 participants were included. We first developed a DLA based on corneal nerve images alone. We then combined classic clinical risk factors of diabetic peripheral neuropathy and quantitative corneal nerve parameters to develop hybrid DLAs. Model performances were assessed based on the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). RESULTS: For the DLA using corneal nerve images alone, the A

Performance of Machine Learning Algorithms for Qualitative and Quantitative Prediction Drug Blockade of hERG1 channel.

Drug-induced abnormal heart rhythm known as Torsades de Pointes (TdP) is a potential lethal ventricular tachycardia found in many patients. Even newly released anti-arrhythmic drugs, like ivabradine with HCN channel as a primary target, block the hERG potassium current in overlapping concentration interval. Promiscuous drug block to hERG channel may potentially lead to perturbation of the action potential duration (APD) and TdP, especially when with combined with polypharmacy and/or electrolyte disturbances. The example of novel anti-arrhythmic ivabradine illustrates clinically important and o
