BACKGROUND: Central venous pressure (CVP) is traditionally obtained through subclavian or internal jugular central catheters; however, many patients who could benefit from CVP monitoring have only femoral lines. Pressure garments are the mainstay of burn scar management despite limited scientific evidence. This study demonstrates a simple method of directly measuring the cutaneous pressures generated by a pressure garment. The results show pressure garments generate an increase in subdermal pressures in the range 9-90 mmHg depending on the anatomical site. Dynamic supratentorial pressure changes may differentially alter tissue pressure and intraventricular fluid pressure. To evaluate these pressures, we used a floppy cuff intracerebral catheter and an intraventricular catheter in the cat and rhesus monkey.
