Broadening their horizons: A rural and urban nursing student exchange program in primary care.

Educational strategies that allow students to experience patient care in both rural and urban settings are imperative to the recruitment and retention of nurses for medically underserved populations or health professional shortage areas. Two state schools of nursing (one urban-oriented and one rural-oriented) in the Mid-Atlantic region were awarded Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA) project funding to educate nursing students and registered nurses in community-based primary care settings. This article will discuss an innovative rural-urban baccalaureate nursing student exchange

Impact of nurse-led advance care planning in a primary care setting.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate patient and clinician experiences of advance care planning (ACP) conversations facilitated by an ACP nurse coordinator (ACP-NC). METHODS: We used a sequential mixed-methods approach that included a patient survey, patient interviews, and clinician interviews at a family medicine clinic. Patients were invited into the study if they had reached a stable point in their ACP decision-making conversations with the ACP-NC or PCP (i.e. their goals and preferences were considered settled at the time) and were not imminently dying. Invitations to complete a survey were

Reasons Patients With Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis Contact Their Specialist Nurses.

BACKGROUND: Questions asked by patients with primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS) during patient-initiated MS nurse consultations may contain salient information that can help health care providers understand their needs, which, in turn, can help tailor counseling and treatment. METHODS: Records of all patients with PPMS visiting the MS center of a large teaching hospital in the Netherlands between January 2007 and January 2021 were studied retrospectively. Number and type (scheduled or patient initiated) of MS nurse consultations, reasons for consultations (in prespecified categorie

Nursing of a patient with multiple primary cancers: A case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Although the occurrence of multiple primary cancers (MPC) is not exceedingly common, it is not rare in clinical practice. In recent years, there has been a notable increase in its incidence. The frequent confusion between MPC and tumor metastasis or recurrence often leads to delays in diagnosis and treatment. This study aimed to enhance understanding of MPC, improve diagnostic accuracy, guide precise clinical treatment, and implement a case management nursing model (CMNM) to facilitate quick patient recovery. CASE SUMMARY: A 61-year-old female patient presented with persistent upp

Tuberculosis prevention knowledge, attitudes, and practices of primary health care nurses.

AIM: Tuberculosis (TB) continues to challenge global health systems, especially in South Africa. Nurses are especially vulnerable to TB exposure, because of their prolonged front-line contact with infected patients-especially in primary health care (PHC) clinics. Their infection control practices, influenced by key factors such as knowledge and attitudes towards TB prevention, become an important consideration. The aim of the study was to (1) describe the TB prevention knowledge, attitudes, and practices of PHC nurses in a South African district and (2) explore moderating factors on TB prevent

Expanding buprenorphine prescribing in primary care: a qualitative study of the experiences of primary care providers and nurse care managers participating in the New York City buprenorphine nurse care manager initiative.

BACKGROUND: Improving access to and retention in evidence-based treatment for opioid use disorder, including buprenorphine, is a critical response to the opioid overdose crisis. To increase the availability of buprenorphine treatment in primary care settings, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene implemented the Buprenorphine Nurse Care Manager Initiative in safety-net primary care clinics. The initiative funds nurse care managers to coordinate ongoing buprenorphine care and provides clinical support and technical assistance for implementation. METHODS: As part of a proces

The Effectiveness of Collaborative Advanced Practice Nursing in Primary Hypertension Management: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a global health concern that is best managed at the primary care level. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) facing resource constraints, collaboration between well-prepared entry-level advanced practice nurses (APNs) and physicians (medical doctors [MDs]) can enhance the care of patients with primary hypertension. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of collaborative entry-level APNs in primary hypertension management, including patient knowledge, physiological and behavioral outcomes, consultation length, and patient satis

Prostacycline (Flolan). Intravenous nursing responsibilities in the care of the patient with primary pulmonary hypertension.

Primary, or unexplained, pulmonary hypertension is an extremely rare lung disorder. For no apparent reason, blood pressures in the pulmonary artery increase far in excess of normal levels. Prostacycline (Flolan, epoprostenol) has proved effective in the long-term care of patients with Type III or Type IV primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH). These patients require intensive intravenous therapy-related education in the safe and compliant administration of prostacycline. The IV nurse's multiple roles in the care of these patients are clearly delineated: instructor, advocate, and clinical resourc
