Impact Absorption on 3D Printed Mouthguard Material in Selected Printing Angulations.

BACKGROUND: Sports-related oral and craniofacial injuries are significant public health problems, and one-third of these injuries result from sports activities. These injuries affect the quality of life and performance of athletes. Sports mouthguards are recommended to mitigate these injuries. Three-dimensional (3D)-printed customized mouthguards may provide superior shock absorption for injury prevention, depending on material and design factors rather than fabrication technique alone. To date, the optimal angle for 3D-printed mouthguards, particularly in terms of impact absorption, has not y

Design and 3D Printing of Soft Orthokeratology Lenses.

The effectiveness of hard orthokeratology (OK) lenses in controlling myopia has been confirmed in clinical practice. However, there exist defects including wear discomfort, limited regulation of mechanical properties and geometry, and effectiveness inconsistency with the expected efficacy. Herein, we analyze the relationship between the mechanical properties of OK lenses and the vertex displacement of the human cornea through the finite element model. It is noted that the expected corneal deformation of 15-20 μm can be achieved by soft OK lenses with an elasticity modulus above 9 MPa, which is

Three-Dimensional Printing Simulator for Endoscopic Adenoidectomy Training.

This article presents an innovative approach to adenoidectomy training through the development of a 3-dimensional (3D) printing model, termed e-A.L.Ex (endoscopic-adenoidectomy learning experience). Adenoidectomy, a common procedure in otolaryngology, has evolved with the integration of endoscopic techniques, necessitating precise training methodologies. The model, created from computed tomography scans and utilizing 3D printing technology, accurately replicates anatomical structures crucial for adenoidectomy. Surgical simulation with bovine thymus mimics adenoid tissue, providing a realistic

3D printing tissue-engineered scaffolds for auricular reconstruction.

Congenital microtia is the most common cause of auricular defects, with a prevalence of approximately 5.18 per 10,000 individuals. Autologous rib cartilage grafting is the leading treatment modality at this stage of auricular reconstruction currently. However, harvesting rib cartilage may lead to donor site injuries, such as pneumothorax, postoperative pain, chest wall scarring, and deformity. Therefore, in the pursuit of better graft materials, biomaterial scaffolds with great histocompatibility, precise control of morphology, non-invasiveness properties are gradually becoming a new research

3D Printing-Assisted Supramalleolar Osteotomy for Ankle Osteoarthritis.

Ankle osteoarthritis (OA) is an important factor that causes pain and dysfunction after ankle joint movement. In early and mid-term ankle OA, supramalleolar osteotomy can delay the progression of disease and maximize the preservation of ankle joint function. Three-dimensional printing (3DP) technology has brought us new hope, which can improve the accuracy of osteotomy, reduce the number of fluoroscopy, reduce the amount of blood loss, and achieve personalized and accurate treatment. The data of 16 patients with ankle OA in our center from January 2003 to July 2020 were retrospectively analyze

Printing a static progressive orthosis for hand rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Static progressive orthosis is used for the treatment of severe joint contracture after trauma and/or surgery. However, a custom-fabricated static progressive splint would be expensive and labor intensive. Especially, owing to very limited payment under the current Taiwanese National Health Insurance, the incentives to fabricate a patient-specific splint are insufficient for a therapist. To ease splint construction, we introduced three-dimensional (3D)-printed "shark fin"-shaped device works as a static progressive orthosis for the hand rehabilitation. The aim of this study was to

Three-Dimensional Printing for Craniofacial Bone Tissue Engineering.

The basic concepts from the fields of biology and engineering are integrated into tissue engineering to develop constructs for the repair of damaged and/or absent tissues, respectively. The field has grown substantially over the past two decades, with particular interest in bone tissue engineering (BTE). Clinically, there are circumstances in which the quantity of bone that is necessary to restore form and function either exceeds the patient's healing capacity or bone's intrinsic regenerative capabilities. Vascularized osseous or osteocutaneous free flaps are the standard of care with autologo

Customized Pessary Fabrication Using Three-Dimensional Printing Technology.

BACKGROUND: Pessaries are a treatment option for pelvic organ prolapse, stress urinary incontinence (SUI), and cervical incompetence. An effective pessary is comfortable, corrects the presenting problem, does not cause adverse effects, and is easy to remove. Discomfort and poor fit limit the usefulness of pessaries for many women. Each patient presents with unique anatomy and thus the effectiveness of commercially available pessaries may be limited by lack of customization. METHOD: A patient presenting with SUI and failed commercial pessary fittings desired nonsurgical treatment. Using a mold

Three-Dimensional Printing of a Complex Aortic Anomaly.

Complex congenital aortic anomalies include diverse types of malformations that may be clinically asymptomatic or present with respiratory or esophageal symptoms. These anomalies may be associated with other congenital heart diseases. It is hard to identify the accurate anatomic vessel location from two-dimensional imaging data, such as computed tomography. As an additive manufacturing method, three-dimensional (3-D) printing can covert the acquired imaging data into 3-D physical models. This protocol describes the procedure for modeling the volumetric DICOM imaging into 3-D data and printing

Bubble-burst-induced Puddle Jumping and Jet Printing.

Self-propelled droplet jumping has widespread applications in surface cleaning, condensation heat transfer, hydrogen production, and triboelectric nanogenerator due to the passive yet effective cross-interface transfer of mass, momentum, energy and charge, whose rates generally increase with droplet size. However, as droplet size increases, gravity inevitably impedes droplet's mobility, imposing a capillary length constraint of 2.7 mm for water droplet, beyond which self-propelled jumping remains a persistent challenge. Here, we report passive jumping of water puddle in the unprecedented centi
