Persistent and Transitory Sexualized Behavior Problems in Children.

The aim of this longitudinal study was to examine the course of sexualized behavior problems (SBP) over 2 years in a sample comprised of 104 children aged 2-12, including 62 children with histories of child sexual abuse (CSA). Parents completed questionnaires assessing SBP, internalizing and externalizing difficulties at baseline, as well as 2 years later. In more than half (56.7%) of children with clinically significant SBP at baseline, sexualized behaviors persisted and remained at a clinically significant level over time. In children with CSA, 48.4% presented persistent SBP, 27.4% presented

Temperament and Common Disruptive Behavior Problems in Preschool.

The study evaluated trait associations with common Disruptive Behavior Disorders (DBD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), during an understudied developmental period: Preschool. Participants were 109 children ages 3 to 6 and their families. DBD symptoms were available via parent and teacher/caregiver report on the Disruptive Behavior Rating Scale. Traits were measured using observational coding paradigms, and parent and examiner report on the Child Behavior Questionnaire and the California Q-Sort. The DBD groups exhibited significantly hig

Clinicians frequently encounter problem behaviors such as self-harm, restrictive eating, binge eating, alcohol misuse, drug misuse, smoking, sexual promiscuity, internet addiction, excessive exercise, and aggression. Although these behaviors commonly co-occur, no scale exists to measure them concurrently. Based on data from two opportunity samples (N = 691 a…

Behavioral and emotional problems in adolescents with Tourette syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Tourette syndrome (TS) are at risk of an array of behavioral and emotional problems, resulting in social, academic and vocational function impairments. This study intended to examine the nature and severity of behavioral and emotional problems in Taiwanese TS adolescents. METHODS: Forty TS adolescents with normal IQ and thirty age- and gender-matched normal controls were evaluated using the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) and the Child Behavioral Checklist (CBCL) to understand the severity of tic symptoms, and behavioral and emotional problems. The main careta

Cognitive and behavioral problems in children with centrotemporal spikes.

Atypical features in benign epilepsy of childhood with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS) are not uncommon. There are children with BECTS who do not have a benign outcome in terms of neuropsychologic functioning. BECTS have been linked with Landau-Kleffner syndrome (LKS) and continuous spikes and waves during slow sleep (CSWS). At the Medical College of Georgia from January 1988 to June 1999, 78 children, ages 2-16 years, were identified to have electroencephalogram evidence of centrotemporal spikes. Their medical records were reviewed for developmental history, behavioral problems, and school perf

Problem behaviors associated with 15q- Angelman syndrome.

Caregivers of persons with Angelman syndrome completed the Aberrant Behavior Checklist and Reiss Screen for Maladaptive Behavior. Seventy-three replies were received, and comparisons were made with other published data. Responses indicated that 15q- Angelman syndrome is associated with such problems as lack of speech, overactivity, restlessness, and eating and sleep problems. Episodes of inappropriate laughter were only reported for 57%, despite being considered a cardinal feature of the syndrome; eating problems (64%) and a fascination with water (68%) were reported more frequently. Dissociative disorders in children: behavioral profiles and problems.

Transient dissociative episodes are a common and normative phenomenon during childhood that generally decrease during adolescence to relatively low levels in adults. Retrospective clinical research has firmly established a connection between childhood trauma and the development of dissociative disorders in adults. A growing number of clinicians are now identifying dissociative symptoms in abused children, and there is increasing evidence that dissociative disorders represent a significant and hitherto unrecognized form of psychopathology in traumatized children. Pathological dissociation is a

A preliminary assessment of behavioral problems in children with mastocytosis.

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to 1) review mastocytosis in terms of the behavioral pathology in adults, and 2) to assess a group of pediatric patients with mastocytosis to determine if similar behavioral pathology is evident. METHOD: Twelve children ages two to eleven referred to the NIH, a tertiary referral center for mastocytosis, were studied. Questionnaires were mailed for assessment of the child's behavior: parents completed the Childhood Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and children four years of age or more were evaluated by their teachers via the Child Behavior Checklist-Teach

Development of behavioral and emotional problems in Tourette syndrome.

Tourette syndrome is a movement disorder with multiple neuropsychiatric features. Using the parent form of the Child Behavior Checklist by Achenbach and Edelbrock, we identified behavioral and emotional difficulties in 78 males, 6-16 years of age, with Tourette syndrome. Symptoms most often identified included obsessive-compulsive behavior, aggressiveness, hyperactivity, immaturity, withdrawal, and somatic complaints. Abnormal checklist scores were most prevalent in adolescents with Tourette syndrome. Tic severity was not a statistically significant predictor of behavioral disturbance, althoug

[Family life events and behavior problems in children].

In this paper, Family Life Event Questionnaire and Children Behavior Questionnaire were applied to measure the 402 subjects between 3-15 years old from 301 rural and urban families. Behavior problems of educationally handicapped and normal pupils.

Male pupils identified as behaviorally disordered, learning disabled, and educable mentally retarded, as well as nonidentified normal boys, were rated by their teachers on the Behavior Problem Checklist. Analyses of the ratings indicated significant differences for pupil category, Behavior Problem Checklist dimension, and category by dimension interaction, but no significant differences for age alone or in interaction with other factors. Categories of pupils were best discriminated from one another on the basis of Conduct Disorder and Personality Problem dimensions of the Behavior Problem Chec

Emotional and behavioral problems in children with dilated cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in children is an important cause of severe heart failure and carries a poor prognosis. Adults with heart failure are at increased risk of anxiety and depression and such symptoms predict adverse clinical outcomes such as mortality. In children with DCM, studies examining these associations are scarce. AIMS: We studied whether in children with DCM: (1) the level of emotional and behavioral problems was increased as compared to normative data, and (2) depressive and anxiety problems were associated with the combined risk of death or cardiac transplantat

Common feline problem behaviors: Destructive scratching.

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: While scratching is a normal, beneficial behavior for cats, it can create problems when cats scratch objects owners deem as inappropriate. However, if veterinarians make suitable recommendations from the first veterinary visit, owners will be able to implement effective preventive strategies to develop good scratching patterns for life. Educating owners as to why cats scratch, how to guide cats to scratch only on desirable surfaces (ie, a scratching post), which types of scratching posts are preferred by most cats, the benefits of pheromone products, as well as other strat
