Rapid induction analgesia for the alleviation of procedural pain during burn care.

Burn patients must often endure intense pain during their regular dressing changes. The aim of the present study was to investigate the therapeutic effect of rapid induction analgesia (RIA) on resting and procedural pain, anticipatory anxiety, relaxation levels and medication consumption in 30 hospitalized burn patients. Patients rated levels of pain and relaxation for four burn care sessions. RIA was conducted twice on 15 patients, whereas dressing changes proceeded as usual in 15 control patients. When asked to recall pain during the dressing changes, patients remembered an experience which …

Neonatal procedural pain exposure and pain management in ventilated preterm infants during the first 14 days of life.

OBJECTIVES: Ventilated preterm infants are at high risk for procedural pain exposure. In Switzerland there is a lack of knowledge about the pain management in this highly vulnerable patient population. The aims of this study were to describe the type and frequency of procedures and to determine the amount of analgesia given to this patient group in two Swiss neonatal intensive care units. METHOD: A retrospective cohort study was performed examining procedural exposure and pain management of a convenience sample of 120 ventilated preterm infants (mean age = 29.7 weeks of gestation) during the …

Validation of the Emoji Faces Pain Scale for Evaluating Acute Procedural Pain in Children Aged 3-5 Years.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the measurement performance and clinical feasibility of the Emoji‑FPS for acute procedural pain assessment in children aged 3-5 years, compared with the Wong-Baker FACES Pain Rating Scale (WBFPS). DESIGN: This was an observational study. METHODS: A total of 192 children aged 3-5 years self-reported acute procedural pain using both the Emoji‑FPS and the WBFPS within 5 minutes of routine clinical procedures. Agreement between the two scales and responsiveness of Emoji-FPS were analyzed, and receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to establish pain severity cuto…

Training healthcare professionals in hypnosis-derived communication to mitigate procedural pain in children.

How professionals communicate during medical procedures may have a significant impact on children and adolescents' pain. Rel@x is a manualized training program designed to develop hypnosis-derived communication skills to mitigate childhood pain and distress. The study aimed to evaluate if this training was associated with an improvement and maintenance in communication skills over time, and measure associations between changes and participants' characteristics. A 9-hour training in hypnosis-derived communication was offered to 78 volunteer healthcare professionals from a tertiary pediatric hos

Morphine does not provide adequate analgesia for acute procedural pain among preterm neonates.

BACKGROUND: Morphine alleviates prolonged pain, reduces behavioral and hormonal stress responses induced by surgery among term neonates, and improves ventilator synchrony and sedation among ventilated preterm neonates, but its analgesic effects on the acute pain caused by invasive procedures remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the analgesic efficacy of intravenously administered morphine on heel stick-induced acute pain among preterm neonates. DESIGN: This study was nested within a prospective, randomized, double-blind, multicenter, placebo-controlled trial (the NEOPAIN Trial). SETTIN

Virtual Reality for Managing Procedural Pain and Distress in Paediatrics: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Procedural pain and distress in children can result in severe short- and long-term consequences, including post-traumatic stress syndrome and needle phobia. While distraction techniques (e.g., toys, music) have been widely used, virtual reality (VR) offers a novel, immersive form of distraction. Despite the rapid development of VR technologies, there is a lack of comprehensive evidence regarding which paediatric patients and procedures benefit most from VR interventions. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. A systematic search across PubMed, …

Procedural factors outweigh anatomical morphometry in predicting postoperative pain following retrograde intrarenal surgery.

PURPOSE: Postoperative pain affects 23-45% of RIRS patients, but predictive factors remain unclear. This study evaluated whether anatomical morphometric assessment predicts postoperative pain when controlling for procedural variables in patients with normal upper tract anatomy, and identified which factors most significantly influence pain after RIRS. METHODS: This prospective single-center study included 420 consecutive patients undergoing RIRS (September 2024-May 2025). After exclusions, 320 patients completed three-week follow-up. Forty-five anatomical parameters and procedural variables (

Repetitive daily oxytocin treatment reduces weight gain but not acute neonatal procedural pain.

BACKGROUND: While the incidence of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission steadily increases, neonatology lacks evidence of a safe, effective, and preventive analgesic for treating procedural pain. Given its role in nociception and promoting healthy neurodevelopment, the endogenous neuropeptide oxytocin (OT) emerges as a promising candidate. METHODS: This study investigates the use of daily repeated subcutaneous OT (1 mg/kg) treatment in an established model of neonatal repetitive procedural pain and assesses the effectivity of OT treatment on mechanical sensitivity and body weight. Neonatal procedural pain and preterm infant cortisol response to novelty at 8 months.

OBJECTIVES: Stress systems may be altered in the long term in preterm infants for multiple reasons, including early exposure to procedural pain in neonatal intensive care. This question has received little attention beyond hospital discharge. Stress responses (cortisol) to visual novelty in preterm infants who were born at extremely low gestational age (ELGA; < or =28 weeks), very low gestational age (VLGA; 29-32 weeks), and term were compared at 8 months of age corrected for prematurity (corrected chronological age [CCA]). In addition, among the preterm infants, we evaluated whether cortisol …

Premedicating children for painful invasive procedures.

Children with cancer experience a great deal of anxiety concerning their treatment and invasive tests such as bone marrow aspirations (BMAs) and lumbar punctures (LPs). Responses of pain, fear, and anxiety are well documented and may cause regression, developmental delay, sleeping and eating problems, nausea and vomiting, nightmares, and depression. Diagnostic and treatment procedures need not cause such adverse effects if sufficient pharmacological sedation, analgesia, and anesthesia are used. However, studies show that inappropriate interventions such as underdosing and limited use of medica

Pain management for dermatologic procedures in children.

Simple explanations provided to children and their parents before a dermatologic procedure is attempted will decrease the time it takes to perform the procedure and make it a less difficult experience for all concerned. The dermatologist should always consider the availability of less painful but effective methods when treating children.
