BACKGROUND: The risk of thromboembolic events related to the ethinyl estradiol (EE) dose in oral contraceptive (OC) pills has led to a further dose reduction.
METHODS: An OC pill with 150 micrograms desogestrel combined with only 20 micrograms EE was compared with a pill containing the same dose of desogestrel but 30 micrograms of EE in a Scandinavian multicentre study with follow-up visits after 3, 6 and 12 months.

In a patient with a long history of classical psoriasis, a widespread pustular eruption suddenly developed. The classes of estrogens and progestogens currently in use and their routes of administration have been considered. The decision to prescribe any given estrogen or progestogen and by a particular route has a significant impact on cardiovascular risk factors. Among the estrogens, native estradiol and estrone are favored over equine and synthetic estrogens. Given this choice, oral and systemic routes of administration are not sufficiently different clinically to endorse one method over the other, except for the unusual hypertensive woman or the patient with a history of thromboembolic phenomena.

We investigated maternal-fetal hormone transfer in the mountain spiny lizard, Sceloporus jarrovi, a viviparous species with a simple chorioallantoic placenta. In one experiment, we examined the effect of elevated maternal progesterone on fetal and yolk hormone levels. The objective of the present study was to assess the effects of levonorgestrel (LNG), a synthetic progestin, on early development and the thyroid system of carp using morphological, histological, immunohistochemical, and gene expression analysis.
