A global proprioception concept after hand injury-Patient report.

Hand therapist should take into consideration the importance of hand proprioception in long-term functional outcomes and its potential impairment due to various factors. Rehabilitation programs should focus on proprioceptive training for hand injuries but also consider broader aspects such as global proprioception, plantar support, posture, and balance. Patient's experience after a significant hand and forearm injury resulting from a sports accident, multiple surgeries, and the challenges of recovery emphasizes the importance of holistic approaches to rehabilitation, considering both physical …

Bilateral shoulder proprioception deficit in unilateral anterior shoulder instability.

HYPOTHESIS AND BACKGROUND: Proprioception is an important element of shoulder dynamic stability. It has been shown to be affected in cases of capsular or labral injuries of the glenohumeral joint. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate bilateral shoulder proprioception by active reproduction of joint position both in patients with post-traumatic recurrent unilateral shoulder instability and in normal healthy volunteers. METHODS: We compared 41 patients, comprising 11 female and 30 male patients with an average age of 25.6 years (range, 18-39 years), with post-traumatic unilateral …

Robot-aided developmental assessment of wrist proprioception in children.

BACKGROUND: Several neurodevelopmental disorders and brain injuries in children have been associated with proprioceptive dysfunction that will negatively affect their movement. Unfortunately, there is lack of reliable and objective clinical examination protocols and our current knowledge of how proprioception evolves in typically developing children is still sparse. METHODS: Using a robotic exoskeleton, we investigated proprioceptive acuity of the wrist in a group of 49 typically developing healthy children (8-15 years), and a group of 40 young adults. Without vision participants performed an…

Shoulder proprioception - lessons we learned from idiopathic frozen shoulder.

BACKGROUND: Of all the most frequent soft tissue disorders of the shoulder, idiopathic frozen shoulder (IFS) offers the greatest potential for studying proprioception. Studies concerning the presence of proprioception dysfunctions have failed to determine the potential for spontaneous healing of passive shoulder stabilizers (anterior and posterior capsule, middle and inferior gleno-humeral ligaments), its relationship with passive (PJPS) and active (AJPS) shoulder proprioception for internal and external rotation (IR, ER), as well as the isokinetic muscle performance of the internal and extern…

Foot and ankle sensory neuropathy, proprioception, and postural stability.

Foot and ankle sensory neuropathy may result from a variety of pathologic conditions, especially diabetes mellitus. Decreased sensation, particularly on the plantar surface of the feet, leads to obvious risks of cutaneous injury. Less obvious are the risks of fall-related injury associated with changes in other sensory systems of the foot and ankle, such as the receptors involved in joint movement and position perception. The results of a number of studies demonstrate that the neuropathic process affects these receptors in individuals with diabetes mellitus. Associated with the decreased senso

A review of the peripheral proprioceptive apparatus in the larynx.

The larynx is an organ of the upper airway that participates in breathing, glutition, voice production, and airway protection. These complex functions depend on vocal fold (VF) movement, facilitated in turn by the action of the intrinsic laryngeal muscles (ILM). The necessary precise and near-instantaneous modulation of each ILM contraction relies on proprioceptive innervation of the larynx. Dysfunctional laryngeal proprioception likely contributes to disorders such as laryngeal dystonia, dysphagia, vocal fold paresis, and paralysis. While the proprioceptive system in skeletal muscle derived f…

Neuroplasticity Caused by Peripheral Proprioceptive Deficits.

PURPOSE: Proprioceptive feedback is crucial for motor control and stabilization of the shoulder joint in everyday life and sports. Shoulder dislocation causes anatomical and proprioceptive feedback damage that contributes to subsequent dislocations. Previous recurrent anterior shoulder instability (RSI) studies did not investigate functional neuroplasticity related to proprioception of the injured shoulder. Thus, we aimed to study the differences in neuroplasticity related to motor control between patients with RSI and healthy individuals, using functional magnetic resonance imaging, and asses…

Muscle thixotropy as a tool in the study of proprioception.

When a muscle relaxes after a contraction, cross-bridges between actin and myosin in sarcomeres detach, but about 1% spontaneously form new, non-force-generating attachments. These bridges give muscle its thixotropic property. They remain in place for long periods if the muscle is left undisturbed and give the muscle a passive stiffness in response to a stretch. They are detached by stretch, but reform at the new length. If the muscle is then shortened, the presence of these bridges prevents muscle fibres from shortening and they fall slack. So, resting muscle can be in one of two states, wher

Proprioceptive localization of the left and right hands.

The present study examined the accuracy of proprioceptive localization of the hand using two paradigms. In our proprioceptive estimation paradigm, participants judged the position of a target hand relative to visual references, or their body's midline. Placement of the target hand was active (participants pushed a robot manipulandum along a constrained path) or passive (the robot manipulandum positioned participants' target hand). In our proprioceptive-guided reaching paradigm, participants reached to the unseen location of a hand; both the left and right hands served as the target hand and th

Proprioceptive perturbations of stability during gait.

Through recent studies, the role of proprioceptors in reactions to perturbations during gait has been finally somewhat better understood. The input from spindle afferents has been investigated with tendon taps, vibration and other forms of muscle stretches, including some resembling natural perturbations (stumbling, slips, and ankle inversions). It was found that activation of spindle afferents produces short-latency response (SLR), consistent with a fast spinal pathway. These reflexes induce relatively minor activation in the stretched muscles. A central question is whether stretch reflexes c

Proprioception in the extraocular muscles of mammals and man.

This article summarizes the authors' previous studies on proprioceptors in extraocular muscles (EOMs) of mammals and man. They report on muscle spindles in the EOMs of man, Golgi tendon organs in the EOMs of even-toed ungulates, and palisade endings in the EOMs of the cat. Muscle spindles: Muscle spindles are present in the EOMs of some mammals and in the EOMs of man. Compared with muscle spindles in other skeletal muscles, those in human EOMs exhibit structural differences. These structural differences may indicate a special function. Golgi tendon organs: Golgi tendon organs are absent in hum

The influence of orthoses on the proprioception of the ankle joint.

The ankle joints of 14 healthy volunteers and 16 patients with unstable ankle joints were tested regarding their functional and proprioceptive capabilities. All of them were active athletes. Three tests were used of the study: single-leg stance test, single-leg jumping course test, angle-reproduction test. The influence of three stabilization devices (lace-on-brace/"Mikros", stirrup-brace/"Aircast", taping) on the proprioceptivity of stable and unstable ankle joints was evaluated. The scores of the single-leg jumping course without any stabilizing device (category "standard") ranged between 8.

Are we Measuring Knee Proprioception Correctly? A Case-Control Study of Joint Reposition Sense and Reflex Latencies for Measuring Proprioception in Knee Hemophilic Arthropathy.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Knee proprioception deficits have been found in several types of knee injuries using different measurement techniques. In some cases, such as hemophilic arthropathy, such deficits have been largely inferred from the results of gait and postural stability tests. Hemophilic arthropathy is supposed to produce balance and neuromuscular control impairments associated to knee proprioception deficits. However, there is a lack of studies focused specifically on the measurement of joint proprioception in this group of patients. The aim of this case-control study was to analyze loca…

Local muscle pressure stimulates the principal receptors for proprioception.

Proprioception plays a crucial role in motor coordination and self-perception. Muscle spindles are the principal receptors for proprioception. They are believed to encode muscle stretch and signal limb position and velocity. Here, we applied percutaneous pressure to a small area of extensor muscles at the forearm while recording spindle afferent responses, skeletal muscle activity, and hand kinematics. Three levels of sustained pressure were applied on the spindle-bearing muscle when the hand was relaxed and immobile ("isometric" condition) and when the participant's hand moved rhythmically at…
