Downregulation of human polymorphonuclear cell activities exerted by microorganisms belonging to the alpha-2 subgroup of Proteobacteria (Afipia felis and Rochalimaea henselae).

Intracellular pathogens have evolved effective mechanisms in order to survive in an intracellular environment, thus avoiding destruction by phagocytic cells. In this regard, a correlation between resistance to phagocytic killing and expression of pathogenic potency has been established. In this report, we have studied the interaction between human polymorphonuclear cells (PMN) and two gram-negative microorganisms, Afipia felis and Rochalimaea henselae, which belong to the alpha-2 subgroup of the class Proteobacteria. A. falis has been previously proposed as the causative agent of Cat Scratch D…

16S rRNA sequences of Bartonella bacilliformis and cat scratch disease bacillus reveal phylogenetic relationships with the alpha-2 subgroup of the class Proteobacteria.

The primary structures of 16S rRNAs of Bartonella bacilliformis, an isolate of the cat scratch disease (CSD) bacillus, and a strain phenotypically similar to the CSD bacillus were determined by reverse transcriptase sequencing. These microorganisms were found to be members of the alpha-2 subgroup of the class Proteobacteria. The sequence from B. bacilliformis was most closely related to the rRNA of Rochalimaea quintana (91.7% homology), the etiologic agent of trench fever. The sequence from the isolate of the CSD bacillus showed the greatest homology with Brucella abortus (89.7%) and, when com…

Gamma-proteobacteria Aquicella lusitana gen. nov., sp. nov., and Aquicella siphonis sp. nov. infect protozoa and require activated charcoal for growth in laboratory media.

Several isolates, belonging to two new species of the same novel genus of gamma-proteobacteria, were recovered from drilled well (borehole) and spa water at São Gemil in central Portugal. These organisms are phylogenetically most closely related to the strictly intracellular uncultured species of the genus Rickettsiella, which cause disease in arthropods, and to the facultatively intracellular species of the genus Legionella, some of which cause Legionnaires' disease and Pontiac fever. The São Gemil strains grew only on media containing charcoal, as is also true of the species of the genus LEG…

Long-term mildronate treatment increased Proteobacteria level in gut microbiome, and caused behavioral deviations and transcriptome change in liver, heart and brain of healthy mice.

Mildronate is a cardiac and neuroprotective drug that is widely used in some countries. By inhibiting carnitine biosynthesis, mildronate imp … rative behavior. We also found that mildronate induced a dysbiosis, as manifested by an increase in Proteobacteria level in gut microbiome. At the same time, the absence of a statistically significant increase in mouse strength and endurance procedures suggests that mildronate effect on productivity is negligible. The sum of our data suggests that long-term trea …

Helicobacter pylori eradication with bismuth quadruple therapy leads to dysbiosis of gut microbiota with an increased relative abundance of Proteobacteria and decreased relative abundances of Bacteroidetes and Actinobacteria.

BACKGROUND: Bismuth quadruple therapy is the treatment of choice for the first-line therapy of Helicobacter pylori infection in areas of hig … ollow-up. Before treatment, the most abundant phyla were Firmicutes (45.3%), Bacteroidetes (24.3%), Proteobacteria (9.9%), and Actinobacteria (5.0%). At the end of bismuth therapy, the relative abundances of Bacteroidetes and Actinobacteria decreased to 0.5% (P < .001) and 1.3% (P = .038), respectively. Additionally, the relative abundance of Verrucomicrobia als …

Purple phototrophic bacteria for resource recovery: Challenges and opportunities.

Sustainable development is driving a rapid focus shift in the wastewater and organic waste treatment sectors, from a "removal and disposal" approach towards the recovery and reuse of water, energy and materials (e.g. carbon or nutrients). Purple phototrophic bacteria (PPB) are receiving increasing attention due to their capability of growing photoheterotrophically under anaerobic conditions. Using light as energy source, PPB can simultaneously assimilate carbon and nutrients at high efficiencies (with biomass yields close to unity (1 g CODbiomass·g CODremoved-1)), facilitating the maximum reco

Microbial communities from arid environments on a global scale. A systematic review.

Arid environments are defined by the lack of water availability, which is directly related to the mean annual precipitation (MAP), and high … nments. We show that arid soils display a higher abundance of Actinobacteria and lower abundance of Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria, and Planctomycetes, compared with non-arid soil microbiomes, revealing that microbial structure seems to be strongly modulated by MAP and MAT and not by pH in arid soils. We observed that environmental and physicochemical features we …

Microbial community structures and functions of wastewater treatment systems in plateau and cold regions.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in plateau regions have unique microbial community structures. In this study, Illumina high-throughput sequencing technology was applied to investigate microbial communities of plateau WWTPs. The research showed that microbial diversities and richness were negatively associated with the altitude and positively to the water temperature to a certain extent. The dominant phyla of plateau and control WWTPs were similar, which mainly included Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi and Firmicutes. In plateau WWTPs, the LEfSe analysis found 4 biomarkers which c…
