Temporal resolution in young and elderly subjects as measured by mismatch negativity and a psychoacoustic gap detection task.

OBJECTIVES: The speech understanding difficulties of elderly persons with age-related hearing loss may be related in part to reduced auditory temporal resolution. To investigate the effects of aging on temporal resolution, the electrophysiological and psychoacoustic detection thresholds for a very short silent gap within a pure tone were determined, and the relation between the two test results was examined. METHODS: Behavioral gap detection thresholds were determined in 10 young and 10 elderly normally hearing subjects using an adaptive test procedure. To elicit mismatch negativity (MMN), de

Active control of the volume acquisition noise in functional magnetic resonance imaging: method and psychoacoustical evaluation.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) provides a noninvasive tool for observing correlates of neural activity in the brain while a subject listens to sound. However, intense acoustic noise is generated in the process of capturing MR images. This noise stimulates the auditory nervous system, limiting the dynamic range available for displaying stimulus-driven activity. The noise is potentially damaging to hearing and is distracting for the subject. In an active noise control (ANC) system, a reference sample of a noise is processed to form a sound which adds destructively with the noise at

Novel psychoacoustic measure of spectral-temporal processing for discrete regions of the cochlear array: a proof-of-concept study.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the general success of cochlear implantation (CI), the impact of known pathophysiological processes occurring within the cochlea after surgery on hearing outcomes are poorly understood. Previous studies suggested localised intracochlear variations in the electrode-cochlear interface and neurosensory targets may be contributing to poor outcomes for some CI users. Research has highlighted the need to define optimal cochlear biomarkers and behavioural measures to enhance diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for CI users with poor outcomes. The current proof of concept study

Psychoacoustic abilities in pediatric cochlear implant recipients: The relation with short-term memory and working memory capacity.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to investigate school-age children with cochlear implants (CIs) and their typically developing peers in terms of auditory short-term memory (ASTM), auditory working memory (AWM), visuospatial short-term memory (VSTM), visuospatial working memory (VWM), spectral resolution and monosyllabic word recognition in noise. METHODS: Twenty-three prelingually deaf CI users and twenty-three typically developing (TD) peers aged 7-10 years participated. Twelve children with CI were earlier-implanted (i.e., age at implantation ≤24 months). Children with CIs were compared to typically

Psychoacoustic measurement of phase and level for cross-talk cancellation using bilateral bone transducers: Comparison of methods.

Two bone-conduction hearing aids (BCHAs) could deliver improved stereo separation using cross-talk cancellation. Sound vibrations from each BCHA would be cancelled at the contralateral cochlea by an out-of-phase signal of the same level from the ipsilateral BCHA. A method to measure the level and phase required for these cancellation signals was developed and cross-validated with an established technique that combines air- and bone-conducted sound. Three participants with normal hearing wore bone transducers (BTs) on each mastoid and insert earphones. Both BTs produced a pure tone and the leve

Development and Validation of Sentences in Tamil for Psychoacoustic Evaluation of Voice Using the Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice.

PURPOSE: The Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (CAPE-V) is a standardized instrument used in voice assessment to assess voice quality. It has been translated and culturally adapted in several languages. This study aimed at developing and validating a Tamil version of CAPE-V through auditory perceptual evaluation of remotely recorded voice samples. METHOD: The Tamil version was adapted with permission from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association to match the rationale in English CAPE-V. The sentences were constructed by the first author and validated for content by two

Artificial neural network-based classification to screen for dysphonia using psychoacoustic scaling of acoustic voice features.

For diagnosis and classification of dysphonia, voice specialists can choose from an array of diagnostic tools like perceptual tests or acoustic voice analysis. These methods have in common that they require a high level of specialized training and experience, and therefore are mostly reserved to specialized centers. We aimed at developing an acoustic voice analysis system that could be used as a screening device to monitor, document, and diagnose voice problems that are also encountered by non-voice specialists, such as anesthesiologists, head and neck surgeons, and general surgeons before sur

Sensory deprivation due to otitis media episodes in early childhood and its effect at later age: A psychoacoustic and speech perception measure.

BACKGROUND: Past research has reported that children with repeated occurrences of otitis media at an early age have a negative impact on speech perception at a later age. The present study necessitates documenting the temporal and spectral processing on speech perception in noise from normal and atypical groups. OBJECTIVES: The present study evaluated the relation between speech perception in noise and temporal; and spectral processing abilities in children with normal and atypical groups. METHODS: The study included two experiments. In the first experiment, temporal resolution and frequency

Effects of age, age-related hearing loss, and contralateral cafeteria noise on the discrimination of small frequency changes: psychoacoustic and electrophysiological measures.

The aim of the study was to examine central auditory processes compromised by age, age-related hearing loss, and the presentation of a distracting cafeteria noise using auditory event-related potentials (ERPs). In addition, the relation of ERPs to behavioral measures of discrimination was investigated. Three groups of subjects participated: young normal hearing, elderly subjects with normal hearing for their age, and elderly hearing-impaired subjects. Psychoacoustic frequency discrimination thresholds for a 1000-Hz pure tone were determined in quiet and in the presence of a contralateral cafet

Whole scalp resting state EEG of oscillatory brain activity shows no parametric relationship with psychoacoustic and psychosocial assessment of tinnitus: A repeated measures study.

Tinnitus is a perception of sound that can occur in the absence of an external stimulus. A brief review of electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) literature demonstrates that there is no clear relationship between tinnitus presence and frequency band power in whole scalp or source oscillatory activity. Yet a preconception persists that such a relationship exists and that resting state EEG could be utilised as an outcome measure for clinical trials of tinnitus interventions, e.g. as a neurophysiological marker of therapeutic benefit. To address this issue, we first examin

The effectiveness of the combined transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and tailor-made notched music training (TMNMT) on psychoacoustic, psychometric, and cognitive indices of tinnitus patients.

PURPOSE: Tinnitus network(s) consists of pathways in the auditory cortex, frontal cortex, and the limbic system. The cortical hyperactivity caused by tinnitus may be suppressed by neuromodulation techniques. Due to the lack of definitive treatment for tinnitus and limited usefulness of the individual methods, in this study, a combination of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and tailor-made notched music training (TMNMT) was used. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this descriptive-analytic study, 26 patients with chronic unilateral tinnitus o

Sound therapy and aural rehabilitation for tinnitus: a person centred therapy framework based on an ecological model of tinnitus.

Purpose: Tinnitus is a common oto-neurological complaint often accompanying hearing loss. In this perspective on rehabilitation we describe a framework for sound therapy and aural rehabilitation of tinnitus based on the ecological model of tinnitus. Method: A thematic network analysis-based approach was used to relate aural rehabilitation methods to the ecological model of tinnitus and the client-oriented scale of improvement in tinnitus. Results: Aural rehabilitation methods were mapped to concepts of: (1) Context, (2) presence of sound and (3) reaction to sound. A global theme was: adaptatio

The effect of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty on the nasality of voice.

We prospectively studied the effect of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) on several speech and vocal parameters in 15 patients. Preoperative, 1-month postoperative, and 6-month postoperative assessments were made. Specific parameters included maximum phonation time, mean speaking fundamental frequency, mean frequency perturbation, intensity, and nasalance. Psychoacoustic analysis included pitch, quality, rate, resonance, and loudness. The primary outcome measure was the nasality of voice. At the 1-month postoperative assessment, one patient exhibited mild hypernasality by psychoacoustic analysi

Evoked otoacoustic emission: behaviour under the forward masking paradigm.

The behaviour of evoked otoacoustic emission (EOAE) has been studied in normally hearing adults under the conventional forward masking paradigm. The clicks and tone pips served as signals, and the noise bursts were used as maskers. At noise burst levels, defined as psychoacoustic masking thresholds of signals (postmasking threshold), attenuation of EOAEs was just noticeable but did not occur in all records. The EOAEs were not completely eliminated even at noise levels exceeding the post-masking threshold by 30 dB. Central or neural and peripheral or receptor mechanisms are suggested to be the

A systematic review of the quantitative markers of speech and language of the frontotemporal degeneration spectrum and their potential for cross-linguistic implementation.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a neurodegenerative disease spectrum with an urgent need for reliable biomarkers for early diagnosis and monitoring. Speech and language changes occur in the early stages of FTD and offer a potential non-invasive, early, and accessible diagnostic tool. The use of speech and language markers in this disease spectrum is limited by the fact that most studies investigate English-speaking patients. This systematic review examines the literature on psychoacoustic and linguistic features of speech that occur across the FTD spectrum across as many different languages a

Multidimensional voice evaluation in pretreatment glottic carcinoma.

It is generally accepted that, in glottic carcinoma, the voice will deteriorate, even in the early stages. This paper reports the degree of hoarseness and multidimensional vocal evaluation of glottic carcinoma patients. Forty-seven male glottic carcinoma patients and a control group of 13 normal subjects were included in this study involving psychoacoustic evaluation by doctors, acoustic analysis, phonogram, maximum phonation time and stroboscopy before treatment. A normal voice or mild hoarseness by psychoacoustic evaluation was found in 35% of cases with T1 and T2 glottic carcinoma. Patients

A model describing nonlinearities in hearing by active processes with saturation at 40 dB.

Data from literature related to nonlinearities of the peripheral part of the hearing system are collected and extended by results from measurements of acoustical responses, masking, cubic difference tones and Zwicker tones. The data indicate 40 dB as a significant value for the dynamic range in neurophysiology as well as for the sensation level in psychoacoustics dividing the total level range into two areas of different characteristics. A preliminary model assuming that the outer hair cells act as an amplifier which contains saturation (corresponding to 40 dB) and feed back to sensitize the i

Prediction of binaural click lateralization by brainstem auditory evoked potentials.

A previous study by Furst et al. (1985) has shown that in healthy subjects brainstem responses evoked by binaural auditory stimuli with interaural time difference (ITD) and interaural level difference (ILD) include information about the integration of data received by both ears. A correlation was found between the first major peak of the binaural difference waveform and perception of click lateralization and fusion. We have now tested whether a similar correlation exists in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). The ability to lateralize dichotic clicks was tested in MS patients with normal au

Pitch, periodicity, and auditory organization.

The perception of pitch forms the basis of musical melody and harmony. It is also among the most precise of all our human senses, and with imagination, this precision can be used experimentally to investigate the functioning of the auditory system. This tutorial presents auditory demonstrations from the zoo of pitch effects: pitch shifts, noise pitch, virtual pitch, dichotic pitch, and the pitches of things that are not there at all. It introduces models of auditory processing, derived from contemporary psychoacoustics and auditory physiology, and tests these models against the experimental ef
