Expatriate Nurses' Experiences of Psychological Safety and Cultural Adaptation in Saudi Arabian Hospitals: A Qualitative Interview Study.

AIM: To explore how organisational support systems shape psychological safety and cultural adaptation among expatriate nurses working in Saudi Arabian hospitals. BACKGROUND: Expatriate nurses make up a substantial share of the nursing workforce in Gulf health systems, and their integration is a recurring nurse management concern. Psychological safety, the shared belief that a team is safe for interpersonal risk-taking, is a plausible but underexamined organisational mechanism linking management practice to expatriate nurse adaptation, voice and retention. METHODS: Qualitative interview study…

How Agentic AI Reshapes Work: The Roles of Cognitive Surplus, Psychological Safety, and AI-Human Task Reallocation.

This study examines how the technological characteristics of Agentic AI relate to employees' psychological states and behavioral responses in organizations. Drawing on Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) theory and Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, we conceptualize Agentic AI technological characteristics (AITC) as a higher-order construct comprising autonomous planning, multi-tool orchestration, and proactive feedback, and propose that these characteristics function as job resources associated with greater cognitive surplus and psychological safety, which in turn relate to AI-human task reallo…

Mirtazapine and olanzapine for cancer-related psychological distress in advanced oral cancer: efficacy and safety prospective study.

OBJECTIVES: Psychological distress is a common yet under-recognised complication in cancer patients, significantly affecting quality of life, treatment adherence and clinical outcomes. Patients with oral cavity cancer are particularly susceptible due to the visible disfigurement caused by the disease, speech and swallowing impairments and associated social stigma, which contribute to heightened levels of anxiety, depression and social withdrawal. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the efficacy and safety of olanzapine and mirtazapine in managing psychological distress in patients with or

Psychological interventions for post-traumatic stress injuries among public safety personnel: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Public safety personnel (PSP) are exposed to potentially psychologically traumatic events (PPTE) far more often than the general public, which increases the risk for various post-traumatic stress injuries (PTSIs). While there are many evidence-based psychological interventions for PTSI, the effectiveness of each intervention for PSP remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: The current study assessed the effectiveness and acceptability of psychological interventions for PTSI among PSPs. METHODS: A systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis were performed on the effectiveness and accep

Safety, metabolic and psychological outcomes of Medtronic MiniMed 670G in children, adolescents and young adults: a systematic review.

Hybrid closed loop (HCL) systems are the combination of a pump for insulin delivery and a glucose sensor for continuous glucose monitoring. These systems are managed by an algorithm, which delivers insulin on the basis of the interstitial glucose levels. The MiniMed™ 670G system was the first HCL system available for clinical purpose. In this paper, we reviewed the literature about metabolic and psychological outcomes in children, adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes treated with MiniMed™ 670G. Only 30 papers responded to the inclusion criteria and thus were considered. All the pa

Perceived psychological safety, state social connection, and student flourishing in collaborative music activities: a three-wave longitudinal study.

Collaborative music activities can support relationships and well-being, but the present study did not directly test music-specific mechanisms such as synchrony or collective expression. Instead, it examined a general interpersonal process within higher music education: whether students' individually perceived psychological safety was longitudinally associated with flourishing through state social connection. A three-wave survey was completed by 341 university music students from 23 groups at three Chinese universities, with approximately 6 weeks between waves. Psychological safety was analyze…

How Adult Children's Filial Piety Shapes Older Patients' Medical Responsible Behavior: Psychological Safety and Trust as Sequential Mediators.

Filial piety shapes intergenerational care in China, yet its role in older patients' clinical behavior is unclear. Survey data from 478 older patients across three hospitals in two provinces were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling. Pragmatic obligations were associated with all endogenous constructs; compassionate reverence was associated with relationship comfort, trust, and medical responsible behavior, but not belonging atmosphere. Global trust in doctors mediated all four paths, whereas belonging atmosphere mediated only the pragmatic obligations path and rel

Exploring the Interplay of Social Safety Nets, Race, Ethnicity, and Nativity on Psychological Distress Among Low-Income Mothers.

Low-income mothers face numerous challenges that increase their vulnerability to psychological distress. Their perceived or actual difficulty in accessing vital support networks, whether public or private, can significantly amplify this distress. Socially assigned identities, such as nativity, ethnicity, and race, intersect with socioeconomic factors, influencing mental health outcomes. Using data from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study, our research investigated the impact of public and private safety nets on maternal psychological health. We found that, even after accounting fo

How can we measure psychological safety in mental healthcare staff? Developing questionnaire items using a nominal groups technique.

There have been growing concerns about the well-being of staff in inpatient mental health settings, with studies suggesting that they have higher burnout and greater work-related stress levels than staff in other healthcare sectors. When addressing staff well-being, psychological safety can be a useful concept. However, there is no measure of psychological safety that is suitable for use in inpatient mental health settings. Edmondson (1999) is the most commonly used measure of psychological safety, but it was designed for use in general physical healthcare settings. As inpatient mental health …

Effects of Organizational Climate and Servant Leadership on Work Engagement Among Japanese Nurses: The Mediating Role of Psychological Safety.

BACKGROUND: Work engagement is a pivotal concept associated with nurses' occupational well-being, performance, and retention. According to the job demands-resources (JD-R) model, work engagement is enhanced by job resources in the workplace. In nursing settings, hierarchical structures and interpersonal sensitivities may inhibit open expression, suggesting that psychological safety plays an important role in workplace interactions and work engagement. However, the mechanisms through which organizational climate and leadership influence work engagement via psychological safety have not been suf…
