Psychophysical evidence for a magnocellular pathway deficit in dyslexia.

The relationship between reading ability and psychophysical performance was examined to test the hypothesis that dyslexia is associated with a deficit in the magnocellular (M) pathway. Speed discrimination thresholds and contrast detection thresholds were measured under conditions (low mean luminance, low spatial frequency, high temporal frequency) for which psychophysical performance presumably depends on M pathway integrity. Dyslexic subjects had higher psychophysical thresholds than controls in both the speed discrimination and contrast detection tasks, but only the differences in speed thr

Psychophysical studies of repetitive wrist flexion and extension.

The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the feasibility of using psychophysical methods to determine maximum acceptable forces for various types and frequencies of repetitive wrist motion. Four adjustable work stations were built to simulate repetitive wrist flexion with a power grip, wrist flexion with a pinch grip, and wrist extension with a power grip. The study consisted of two separate experiments. Subjects worked for two days per week during the first experiment, and five days per week during the second experiment. Fifteen women completed the first experiment, working seven hou

Altered interoceptive-exteroceptive profile in Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Evidence from bayesian psychophysics and metacognitive modeling.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is believed to involve impaired processing of external information and excessive focus on internal bodily signals. However, comparative evidence on exteroceptive and interoceptive performance within a common experimental framework remains limited. In the present study, individuals with GAD (n = 31) and healthy controls (HC; n = 31) completed a heart rate discrimination (HRD) task, combined with Bayesian psychophysical modeling and signal detection theory-based metacognitive indices. At the first-order level, we estimated an HRD threshold parameter (α), indexi

Are ipRGCs involved in human color vision? Hints from physiology, psychophysics, and natural image statistics.

Human photoreceptors consist of cones, rods, and melanopsin-expressing intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs). First s … color perception in humans remains debated. We summarized evidence and hypotheses (from physiology, psychophysics, and natural image statistics) about direct and indirect involvement of ipRGCs in human color vision, by first briefly assessing the current knowledge about the role of melanopsin and ipRGCs in vision and codification of spectral signals. We then ap …

Comparison of a Mid Scala and a Perimodiolar Electrode in Adults: Performance, Impedances, and Psychophysics.

OBJECTIVES: The HiFocus Mid-Scala electrode array (HFms) is designed to sit within the scala tympani without touching either the lateral wall or the modiolus. The aim of this study was to compare the HFms to the Helix perimodiolar electrode array. METHOD: Two groups of recipients with Helix (n = 22 ears) and HFms (n = 29 ears) electrode arrays were retrospectively identified and matched by age at implantation and duration of severe to profound deafness. Most comfortable listening levels (M), impedances, Freiburger Monosyllables in quiet, and Oldenburg sentences in adaptive noise were compared

Supralinear and Supramodal Integration of Visual and Tactile Signals in Rats: Psychophysics and Neuronal Mechanisms.

To better understand how object recognition can be triggered independently of the sensory channel through which information is acquired, we devised a task in which rats judged the orientation of a raised, black and white grating. They learned to recognize two categories of orientation: 0° ± 45° ("horizontal") and 90° ± 45° ("vertical"). Each trial required a visual (V), a tactile (T), or a visual-tactile (VT) discrimination; VT performance was better than that predicted by optimal linear combination of V and T signals, indicating synergy between sensory channels. We examined posterior parietal

Stimulus temperature modulates the psychophysical dimensions of salt taste.

Temperature is a fundamental yet understudied parameter of gustatory experience. In this study, we designed a set of experiments that examined how stimulus temperature affects the motivational and sensory-discriminative properties of sodium (NaCl) and nonsodium (KCl) salts. In brief-access tests, water-deprived mice consistently preferred cool (14°C) over warm (36°C) stimuli regardless of salt content. Progressive ratio tests confirmed that cool stimuli possess greater appetitive efficacy, suggesting that, under our experimental conditions, water deprivation may confound temperature preference

Comparisons of electrophysiological and psychophysical fitting methods for cochlear implants.

OBJECTIVE: This study compared two different versions of an electrophysiology-based software-guided cochlear implant fitting method with a procedure employing standard clinical software. The two versions used electrically evoked compound action potential (ECAP) thresholds for either five or all twenty-two electrodes to determine sound processor stimulation level profiles. Objective and subjective performance results were compared between software-guided and clinical fittings. DESIGN: Prospective, double-blind, single-subject repeated-measures with permuted ABCA sequences. STUDY SAMPLE: 48 po

Blindness, But Not HMHA Anosmia, Predicts Loneliness: A Psychophysical Study.

Olfactory deficits can play a detrimental role in everyday social functioning. Perception of 3-hydroxy-3-methylhexanoic acid (HMHA)-a body odor component-could also be linked to this research area. However, no study so far has addressed the problem of HMHA perception in the context of the previously reported relationship between olfactory abilities and social difficulties. Here, we tested whether HMHA-specific anosmia predicted loneliness understood both as a cognitive evaluation of social participation and as one's social isolation, and we additionally analyzed the effects and correlates of H

Modeling Circadian Phototransduction: Quantitative Predictions of Psychophysical Data.

A revised computational model of circadian phototransduction is presented. The first step was to characterize the spectral sensitivity of the retinal circuit using suppression of the synthesis of melatonin by the pineal gland at night as the outcome measure. From the spectral sensitivity, circadian light was defined. Circadian light, thereby rectifies any spectral power distribution into a single, instantaneous photometric quantity. The second step was to characterize the circuit's response characteristic to different amounts of circadian light from threshold to saturation. By doing so a more

Psychophysical testing in rodent models of glaucomatous optic neuropathy.

Processing of visual information begins in the retina, with photoreceptors converting light stimuli into neural signals. Ultimately, signals are transmitted to the brain through signaling networks formed by interneurons, namely bipolar, horizontal and amacrine cells providing input to retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), which form the optic nerve with their axons. As part of the chronic nature of glaucomatous optic neuropathy, the increasing and irreversible damage and ultimately loss of neurons, RGCs in particular, occurs following progressive damage to the optic nerve head (ONH), eventually resul

The conversion of bulbar redness grades using psychophysical scaling.

PURPOSE: To use psychophysical scaling to investigate if the inclusion of reference anchors affected the perceived redness of the reference images of four bulbar redness grading scales and to convert grades between scales. METHODS: Ten participants were asked to arrange printed copies of the McMonnies/Chapman-Davies (6), IER (4), and Efron (5) grading scale images relative to each other, using the stationary but unlabeled 10, 30, 50, 70, and 90 reference images of the validated bulbar redness scale as additional anchors within a given 0 (minimum) to 100 (maximum) redness range (anchored scali

Overshoot measured physiologically and psychophysically in the same human ears.

A nonlinear version of the stimulus-frequency otoacoustic emission (SFOAE) was measured using stimulus waveforms similar to those used for behavioral overshoot. Behaviorally, the seven listeners were as much as 11 dB worse at detecting a brief tonal signal (4.0 kHz, 10 ms in duration) when it occurred soon after the onset of a wideband masking noise (0.1-6.0 kHz; 400 ms in duration) than when it was delayed by about 200 ms, and the nonlinear SFOAE measure exhibited a similar effect. When either lowpass (0.1-3.8 kHz) or bandpass noise (3.8-4.2 kHz) was used instead of the wideband noise, the ph

Psychophysical correlates in children with sensory modulation disorder (SMD).

Sensory modulation disorder (SMD), affecting approximately 5% of children, is characterized by sensory over or under-responsiveness to a range of stimuli in several modalities. Children with over-responsiveness (SOR) demonstrate increased aversion to certain natural stimuli that manifests as increased distress and avoidance behaviors to common stimuli, accompanied by abnormal electrodermal responses and brain evoked potentials to various stimuli. This study is the first to use quantitative sensory testing to characterize the somatosensory sub-modalities of children with SMD. Seventy eight chil

Psychophysical indices of perceptual functioning in dyslexia: A psychometric analysis.

An influential causal theory attributes dyslexia to visual and/or auditory perceptual deficits. This theory derives from group differences between individuals with dyslexia and controls on a range of psychophysical tasks, but there is substantial variation, both between individuals within a group and from task to task. We addressed two questions. First, do psychophysical measures have sufficient reliability to assess perceptual deficits in individuals? Second, do different psychophysical tasks measure a common underlying construct? We studied 104 adults with a wide range of reading ability and

Development of a fast method for determining psychophysical tuning curves.

Psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) can be used to assess the frequency selectivity of the auditory system and to detect and delimit "dead regions" in the cochlea. However, the traditional method for determining PTCs takes too long for use in clinical practice. We evaluated a fast method for determining PTCs, using a band of noise that sweeps in centre frequency and a Békésy method to adjust the masker level required for threshold. The shapes of the PTCs were similar for the fast and traditional methods, for both normally hearing and hearing-impaired subjects. Rates of change of masker level o

Psychophysical assessment of patients with posttraumatic neuropathic trigeminal pain.

This article reviews the utility of psychophysical approaches in the assessment of posttraumatic neuropathic trigeminal pain. Methods of quantitative sensory testing are derived from psychophysical principles and provide a widely accepted means for characterizing sensory dysfunction in patients who experience injury to the trigeminal nerve. No published study, however, has sought to compare sensory findings from trigeminal nerve-injured patients who develop neuropathic pain with those from trigeminal nerve-injured patients who remain pain-free. Moreover, sensory testing data from trigeminal ne

Excitatory-inhibitory network in the visual cortex: psychophysical evidence.

At early stages in visual processing cells respond to local stimuli with specific features such as orientation and spatial frequency. Although the receptive fields of these cells have been thought to be local and independent, recent physiological and psychophysical evidence has accumulated, indicating that the cells participate in a rich network of local connections. Thus, these local processing units can integrate information over much larger parts of the visual field; the pattern of their response to a stimulus apparently depends on the context presented. To explore the pattern of lateral in
