Neurosurgery for psychiatric disorders (NPD), also sometimes referred to as psychosurgery, is rapidly evolving, with new techniques and indications being investigated actively. Many within the field have suggested that some form of guidelines or regulations are needed to help ensure that a promising field develops safely. Multiple countries have enacted specific laws regulating NPD. OBJECTIVES: In 1967, despite escalating international hostility towards psychosurgery, a program of amygdaloid neurosurgery for the reduction of aggressive and self-harming behaviour commenced in Sydney. In this paper, the second of two articles on the Amygdaloid Neurosurgery Project (ANP), we analyse the relative contributions of seven nominated societal, ethical and other factors to the genesis and demise of the ANP, and consider implications of the history of the ANP for the future of neurosurgery for psychiatric disorders (NPD) in New South Wales (NSW) and elsewhere.
CONCLUSIONS: Leadersh…

Heath, a board-certified neurologist, psychiatrist, and psychoanalyst, holds a debated position within this framework and is most notably remembered for his research on schizophrenia. Dr. Heath was one of the first physicians to implant electrodes in deep cortical structures as a psychosurgical intervention. He used electrical stimulation in an attempt…

Angiography, the primary imaging technique used for visualizing the brain's blood vessels and any accompanying abnormalities, also is used for imaging aneurysms and other lesions having an infectious cause. A Nobel laureate who later was recognized for his radical treatment for mental illness, Antonio Caetano de Abreu Freire Egas Moniz, has been credited with discovering angiography. However, despite the tremendous impact it has had on the field of medicine, angiography did not receive the recognition that the researcher's later work in psychosurgery did. For many years, the reason for this se…
