Insomnia disorder is characterized by disturbed sleep continuity and associated daytime impairment. Insomnia is frequent in patients with psychiatric disorders ; 30-40% fulfill the criteria for insomnia disorder as a comorbidity. The six-month psychotherapeutic treatment of a 29-year-old woman with a hysterical personality is described. Criteria for selection of patients suitable for brief psychotherapy and the various applications of this technique are discussed. Aspects of the psychopathology of the hysterical personality are described and related to that of the patient presented, whose sexualized transference exemplifies the important task of 'focusing' this form of treatment.

There are different types of psychotherapy for anxiety, depression, and personality disorders with comparable effect. This review describes the theory, methods, and evidence of psychodynamic short-term therapy. After a description of nuances in the dominant tendencies, the common elements of the therapy are summarised. The therapeutic question is which treatment works best for which patient under which circumstances. In this context, psychodynamic short-term therapy must be part of a continuum of treatment options, adapted to the patients' personal characteristics, needs, and wishes.

Scores of 82 distressed university students receiving psychotherapy were compared on the SCL-90-R with those of 21 distressed students waiting for treatment and those of 126 nondistressed normative students. Child psychotherapy has limited use in an institution. Through play one can appreciate the conflicts and suggest solutions, either verbally or through the play itself. As a framework one can use a dynamic concept of development and learning, and an educational approach. First one must elaborate a clinical history, do a physical examination and apply psychological tests in order to make a good diagnosis. The approach and treatment should be interdisciplinary. The institutional difficulties for this type of work are mentioned.
