Public health professionals' perspectives on alcohol public health interventions: a qualitative interview study.

BACKGROUND: In the UK, alcohol-related deaths are increasing and there are also inequalities in alcohol-related health consequences among lower socioeconomic position groups. National and regional governmental organisations in the UK have responsibility for improving public health and reducing health inequalities. However, there is limited research which has explored the experiences of those developing alcohol public health interventions. Therefore, this study had two research questions: What are public health professionals' experiences and perspectives on the development of public health inte…

The Ugandan youth public health ambassador program: a community-based public health initiative.

BACKGROUND: In 2020, the Global Research, Implementation, and Training (GRIT) Lab at the University of Southern California was forced to quickly shift its large community-based youth public health training programs to respond to the COVID-19 realities. This resulted in the implementation of the Youth Public Health Ambassador (YPHA) program, initially launched in Lira district, Uganda, and since expanded to include Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya. The program serves as a model for other youth-focused, community-based public health education, research, and policy advocacy programming effective in both ru…

Canada's health status: a public health perspective.

Health status assessment and disease surveillance are essential to identify and priorize health issues, to evaluate intervention programs and to plan to meet future needs for health services. Canadians currently benefit by having among the highest life expectancies at birth in the world (81 for females, 74 for males). Disability-free life expectancies for females and males, respectively, were 10.1 and 11.3 years lower for the lowest income quintile compared to the highest. Canada's infant mortality rate in 1990 (7/1000 live births) was one of the lowest in the world but within Canada, the rate

Reframing Efficiency: How Public Deliberation Strengthens Public Health Policy.

With the efforts to downsize US public health infrastructure, a national conversation has emerged about how to use government resources efficiently while maintaining a robust public health system. We argue that well-designed public deliberation can enhance these dimensions of efficiency by improving the quality and contextual fit of policies, rebuilding shared factual baselines in a polarized environment, and increasing trust and adherence to policy outcomes. Through case studies from US influe…
