Effect of Puerperal Infections on Early Neonatal Mortality: A Secondary Analysis of Six Demographic and Health Surveys.

BACKGROUND: Around 1.5 million annual neonatal deaths occur in the first week of life, and infections represent one of the major causes in developing countries. Neonatal sepsis is often strictly connected to infection of the maternal genital tract during labour. METHODS: The association between signs suggestive of puerperal infection and early neonatal mortality (<7 days of life) was performed using Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) data of six countries, conducted between 2010 and 2013. The population attributable fraction (PAF) was generated using the estimates on early neonatal mortalit…

Use of a clean delivery kit and factors associated with cord infection and puerperal sepsis in Mwanza, Tanzania.

Our objective was to determine the effectiveness of an intervention that incorporated education about the "six cleans" with the use of a clean delivery kit in preventing cord infection and puerperal sepsis. A stepped-wedge, cross-sectional study was conducted in 10 surveillance sites across two rural districts of Mwanza Region, Tanzania. A total of 3262 pregnant women between the ages of 17 and 45 years were enrolled in the study. Village health workers administered questionnaires to each mother at 5 days postpartum and inspected the infants' umbilical cord stumps for signs of infection. Newbo

Host-pathogen interactions in Streptococcus pyogenes infections, with special reference to puerperal fever and a comment on vaccine development.

Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus) causes a variety of diseases, including acute pharyngitis, impetigo, rheumatic fever and the streptococcal toxic shock syndrome. Moreover, S. pyogenes was responsible for the classical example of a nosocomial infection, the epidemics of puerperal fever (childbed fever) that caused the death of numerous women in earlier centuries. The most extensively studied virulence factor of S. pyogenes is the surface M protein, which inhibits phagocytosis and shows antigenic variation. Recent data indicate that many M proteins confer phagocytosis resistance be

Antimicrobial susceptibility of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolated from maternal and child infections in Harare. The Puerperal Sepsis Study Group.

The in vitro antimicrobial susceptibilities of 29 PPNG and 26 non-PPNG isolated from women and neonates in Zimbabwe were investigated. There was evidence of chromosomal resistance to penicillin in many of the non-PPNG strains, with over 60 percent of all isolates having an MIC greater than 1 mg/litre. Reduced susceptibility to tetracycline was evident in about 20 percent of PPNG strains, particularly those containing the 4.4Md plasmid, while over 10 percent of non-PPNGs showed partial resistance to cefuroxime. Less than half of the strains were susceptible to erythromycin (MIC50 greater than 0

Out-of-season increase of puerperal fever with group A Streptococcus infection: a case-control study, Netherlands, July to August 2018.

We observed an increase in notifications of puerperal group A Streptococcus (GAS) infections in July and August 2018 throughout the Netherlands without evidence for common sources. General practitioners reported a simultaneous increase in impetigo. We hypothesised that the outbreak of puerperal GAS infections resulted from increased exposure via impetigo in the community. We conducted a case-control study to assess peripartum exposure to possible, non-invasive GAS infections using an online questionnaire. Confirmed cases were recruited through public health services while probable cases and con

Value of collaborative investigation by hospital infection control, public health services and a national reference laboratory during an increase in puerperal sepsis.

BACKGROUND: In a Dutch tertiary care hospital, two cases of puerperal sepsis were diagnosed within 16 days in June-July 2022. The subsequent outbreak investigation emphasizes the value of collaboration between hospital infection control, regional public health services (PHS) and a national reference laboratory. The aim was to identify possible causes of this increase to prevent further cases of puerperal sepsis. METHODS: Hospital infection control identified a group of puerperal sepsis cases clustered within the last year in the hospital, a cluster caused by S. pyogenes emm12.0. The hospital

Healthcare workers' level of adherence to infection prevention and control and its impact on puerperal and neonatal sepsis among delivering women and neonates in Central Tanzania: a protocol for a prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Delivering women and neonates are at a great risk of acquiring infections due to a lack of adherence to infection prevention and control (IPC), a low level of immunity and extended exposure to care procedures that can lead to infections. This prospective cohort study aims to assess the level of adherence to IPC among healthcare workers and its impact on puerperal and neonatal sepsis in the Dodoma region. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The level of adherence to IPC is examined cross-sectionally among healthcare workers (HCWs) in contact with delivering women and their neonates. A prospect

[The peripartum disease complex of the sow in commercial swine breeding. 2. The effect of prepartum bacteriuria on the peripartum and postpartum occurrence of puerperal diseases in the sow with anamnesis of urinary tract infection and vaginal-vulvar discharge].

In an industrial pig production unit ten sows were selected at random. All the sows had puerperal disease in their anamnesis and all of them revealed at the time of selection--during their late pregnancy--urinary tract infection (UTI) and vaginal-vulvar discharge (VD) and most of them had significant bacteriuria a.p. All the sows were evaluated using Bilkei's MMA early detection system. The majority of the sows which have had significant bacteriuria a.p. developed a puerperal disease.

Puerperal pyrexia: a review. Part I.

UNLABELLED: Puerperal pyrexia and sepsis are among the leading causes of preventable maternal morbidity and mortality not only in developing countries but in developed countries as well. Most postpartum infections take place after hospital discharge, which is usually 24 hours after delivery. In the absence of postnatal follow-up, as is the case in many developing countries, many cases of puerperal infections can go undiagnosed and unreported. Besides endometritis (endomyometritis or endomyoparametritis), wound infection, mastitis, urinary tract infection, and septic thrombophlebitis are the ch…
