A first-principles investigation of bio-ion-induced magnetic modulation in defect-engineered Janus WSSe monolayers: toward quantum neuromorphic health sensing for brain-inspired diagnostics.

The emulation of synaptic functionality using two-dimensional (2D) quantum materials offers a promising route toward non-invasive, brain-inspired diagnostic technologies. In this work, we employ first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate ion-induced magnetic modulation in pristine and defect-engineered Janus WSSe monolayers. We show that biologically relevant ions such as Ca2+, Na+, and Cl- induce distinct and ion-specific changes in the magnetic moment. This behaviour arises from the intrinsic out-of-plane asymmetry of Janus WSSe combined with defect-induced

TD-DFT analysis of excitation of the closed-form spironaphthopyran in methanol solution: The contribution of vibronic transitions and intermolecular hydrogen bonds.

A set of forty hybrid functionals, combined with a 6-31++G(d,p) basis set and an IEFPCM solvent description, was applied to calculate the S0→S1 excitation of the spironaphthopyran (SNP) photochromic compound. None of the hybrid functionals resulted in Cspiro-O bond cleavage upon optimization of the S1 excited state of the SNP, in contrast to the spiropyran BIPS which we studied earlier. At the same time, the deformations of the SNP during excitation turned out to be very small (in contrast to those for BIPS) which made it possible to calculate its vibronic absorption spectrum. The best agreeme

Dispersion Interactions in Exciton-Localized States. Theory and Applications to π-π* and n-π* Excited States.

We address the problem of intermolecular interaction energy calculations in molecular complexes with localized excitons. Our focus is on the correct representation of the dispersion energy. We derive an extended Casimir-Polder formula for direct computation of this contribution through second order in the intermolecular interaction operator V̂. An alternative formula, accurate to infinite order in V̂, is derived within the framework of the adiabatic connection (AC) theory. We also propose a new parametrization of the VV10 nonlocal correlation density functional, so that it corrects the CASSCF

Green's function coupled cluster simulation of the near-valence ionizations of DNA-fragments.

Accurate description of the ionization process in DNA is crucial to the understanding of the DNA damage under exposure to ionizing radiation and the exploration of the potential application of DNA strands in nanoelectronics. In this work, by employing our recently developed Green's function coupled-cluster library on supercomputing facilities, we have studied the spectral functions of several guanine-cytosine (G-C) base pair structures ([G-C]n, n = 1-3) for the first time in a relatively broad near-valence regime ([-25.0, -5.0] eV) in the coupled-cluster with singles and doubles level. Our foc

Metal-Mediated Addition of N-Nucleophiles to Isocyanides: Mechanistic Aspects.

Despite the long history of the investigation of nucleophilic addition to metal-bound isocyanides, some important aspects of the reaction mechanism remain unclear even for the simplest systems. In this work, the addition of the sp³-N, sp²-N, and mixed sp²/sp³-N nucleophiles (i.e., HNMe₂, HN=CPh₂, and H₂N-N=CPh₂, respectively) to isocyanides C≡NR coordinated to the platinum(II) centers in the complexes cis-[Pt(C≡NCy)(2-pyz)(dppe)]⁺ (2-pyz = 2-pyrazyl, dmpe = Me₂PCH₂CH₂PMe₂) and cis-[PtCl₂(C≡NXyl)(C≡NMe)] was studied in detail by theoretical (DFT) methods. The mechanism of these reactions is ste

Adenine formation without HCN.

From a historic point of view adenine was always presumed to be the product of HCN pentamerization. In this work a new mechanism for adenine synthesis in the gas phase without HCN is proposed. The concept of retrosynthetic analysis was employed to create a tautomer of adenine, which can be reached from previously observed interstellar molecules C3NH and HNCNH and its isomer H2NCN. MP2/6-311++G(2d,2p) calculations were performed to calculate the Gibbs free energy of the minimum and the transition state (TS) structures involved in the six step mechanism. This new mechanism requires a smaller num

Universal mechanism for Anderson and weak localization.

Localization of stationary waves occurs in a large variety of vibrating systems, whether mechanical, acoustical, optical, or quantum. It is induced by the presence of an inhomogeneous medium, a complex geometry, or a quenched disorder. One of its most striking and famous manifestations is Anderson localization, responsible for instance for the metal-insulator transition in disordered alloys. Yet, despite an enormous body of related literature, a clear and unified picture of localization is still to be found, as well as the exact relationship between its many manifestations. In this paper, we d

Quantum efficiencies in a multi-annular photocatalytic reactor.

Radiative energy efficiencies of a multi-annular photocatalytic reactor were evaluated and analysed. The total quantum efficiency, defined as the ratio of the number of molecules of the pollutant reacted to the number of photons emitted by the lamp, is expressed as the product of three factors: (i) the reactor radiation incidence efficiency, (ii) the catalyst radiation absorption efficiency, and (iii) the overall reaction quantum efficiency. By means of a detailed mathematical model, the numerical values of each one were 83, 92, and 0-2.5%, respectively. The dependence of the overall reaction

Are Heavy Pnictogen-π Interactions Really "π Interactions"?

The noncovalent interactions of heavy pnictogens with π-arenes play a fundamental role in fields like crystal engineering or catalysis. The strength of such bonds is based on an interplay between dispersion and donor/acceptor interactions, and is generally attributed to the presence of π-arenes. Computational studies of the interaction between the heavy pnictogens As, Sb and Bi and cyclohexane, in comparison with previous studies on the interaction between heavy pnictogens and benzene, show that this concept probably has to be revised. A thorough analysis of all the different energetic compone

Dynamic (hyper)polarizabilities of the sulphur dioxide molecule: coupled cluster calculations including vibrational corrections.

In this work we report results for dynamical (hyper)polarizabilities of the sulphur dioxide molecule with inclusion of vibrational corrections. The electronic contributions were computed analytically at the single and double coupled cluster level through response theories for the frequencies 0, 0.0239, 0.0428, 0.0656, 0.0720, and 0.0886 hartree. Contributions of the connected triple excitations to the dynamic electronic properties were also estimated through the multiplicative correction scheme. Vibrational corrections were calculated by means of the perturbation theoretical method. The result

Electron scattering cross sections from HCN over a broad energy range (0.1-10,000 eV): Influence of the permanent dipole moment on the scattering process.

We report theoretical integral and differential cross sections for electron scattering from hydrogen cyanide derived from two ab initio scattering potential methods. For low energies (0.1-100 eV), we have used the symmetry adapted-single centre expansion method using a multichannel scattering formulation of the problem. For intermediate and high energies (10-10,000 eV), we have applied an optical potential method based on a screening corrected independent atom representation. Since HCN is a strong polar molecule, further dipole-induced excitations have been calculated in the framework of the f

Mixed valence character of anionic linear beryllium chains: a CAS-SCF and MR-CI study.

A theoretical investigation on the mixed valence behavior, or bistability, of a series of anionic linear chains composed of beryllium atoms is presented. Calculations on Be(N)- (with N = 7, ..., 13) were performed at CAS-SCF and MR-CI levels by using an ANO basis set containing 6s4p3d2f contracted orbitals for each atom. Our results show a consistent gradual shift between different classes of mixed valence compounds as the number of beryllium atoms increases, from strong coupling (class III) toward valence-trapped (class II). Indeed, in the largest cases (N > 10), the anionic chains were found

Molecular dynamics simulation and QM/MM study of IscB-ωRNA complex.

The CRISPR-Cas9 system's gene-editing fidelity relies on the HNH nuclease domain's ability to hydrolyze DNA via metal-ion catalysis. While IscB-ωRNA variants offer advantages for viral delivery due to their small size, their editing efficiency is much lower than that of Cas9. The understanding of how HNH-domain dynamics and metal-ion selection jointly control catalysis is essential for its rational improvement. Here, we employ molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) simulations, and free energy perturbations (FEP) to study the conformation dynamics of

When the environment matters most: polarizable-embedding QM/MM for multi-photon absorption in red fluorescent proteins.

Multi-photon absorption in fluorescent proteins (FPs) is highly sensitive to the surrounding protein environment, yet most computational studies treat the chromophore in isolation, which limits the understanding of protein-specific non-linear response. This work presents a polarizable-embedding (PE), quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM), investigation of two- and three-photon absorption (2PA and 3PA) across seven red fluorescent proteins, including DsRed, mCherry, mPlum, mStrawberry, TagRFP, mRFP1, and mKate. The calculated 2PA cross sections (σ2PA) show strong agreement with experi

A Consistent Approach to Modeling Quantum Observers.

A number of no-go theorems have shown that Wigner's Friend scenarios combined with various metaphysical assumptions lead to contradictions in any version of quantum theory. We present an alternative constructive approach that only assumes that agents make properly qualified true statements. Quantum observers are modeled rigorously, although simplistically, using quantum circuits. Terminology is suggested to help avoid contradictions. Our methodology is applied to the Frauchiger-Renner paradox and results in statements by all agents that are both true and consistent. Quantum theory evades the n…

Quantum cognition and projection bias.

The innovative application of quantum mechanical concepts of probability to cognitive science has provided new, meaningful ways to more accurately model human decision making. Leveraging the dynamic geometric principles associated with the mathematics of quantum theory, we use the idea of probability interference to explain projection bias and its violations of the classical law of total probability and expected utility theory. In particular, Khrennikov's contextual probability model is successfully applied to the study by Read & van Leeuwen on hunger and projection bias. We conclude that prob…

AMOEBA Polarizable Atomic Multipole Force Field Parameters for Flavins.

Computation of redox potential of cofactors in biological systems requires an accurate description of the interaction between the redox cofactors and the biomolecular environment and extensive conformational sampling. Seeking to achieve a quantitative leap in redox potential evaluation for flavoproteins, we report here the calibration of sets of parameters to describe flavin molecules in various redox states in the framework of AMOEBA, a multipolar and polarizable force field. We calibrate both the isoalloxazine ring in the five biologically relevant redox states and the polyol chain needed to

Quantum Chemical Tailoring of Donor-Acceptor Organic Nanomedicines for Nonlinear Optical Performance and Theragnostic Applications: Molecular Descriptors, In Silico, and Ab Initio Investigations.

Nonlinear optical (NLO) active chromophores and their applications in photothermal therapy (PTT) demonstrate great potential in modern theragnostics, owing to their efficient light-matter interactions. A recognized D-π-A chromophore, FTC-3f, which is reported to exhibit a high photothermal conversion efficiency (~51.11%), was structurally modified with various spacers and acceptors to elucidate enhanced PTT and NLO behavior through DFT and TD-DFT simulations. Molecular geometries were optimized at the B3LYP/6-31G (d, p) level. Their electronic properties, charge separation, and efficient trans

Cryptanalysis of a controller-independent controlled bidirectional QSDC protocol.

A recent protocol by Cai et al. [J. Korean Phys. Soc. (2026)] proposed a controller-independent controlled bidirectional quantum secure direct communication (CICBQSDC) scheme based on four-particle cluster states, claiming provable unconditional security via Wyner's wiretap channel theory. In this paper, we demonstrate that the protocol is vulnerable to a quantum Trojan-horse attack that is entirely consistent with the threat model assumed by the original authors; namely, the controller Charlie is an untrusted party with the same capabilities as the strongest possible eavesdropper. Prediction of 57Fe Mössbauer Nuclear Quadrupole Splittings with Hybrid and Double-Hybrid Density Functionals.

As a crucial parameter in Mössbauer spectroscopy, nuclear quadrupole splitting (NQS) exhibits a strong dependence on quantum chemistry methods, which makes accurate theoretical predictions challenging. Meanwhile, the continuous emergence of new density functionals presents opportunities to advance current NQS research. In this study, we evaluate the performance of eleven hybrid density functionals and twelve double-hybrid density functionals, selected from widely used functionals and newly developed functionals, in predicting the NQS values of the 57Fe nuclide for 32 iron-containing molecules
