Human rabies is almost invariably fatal, and globally it remains an important public health problem. Our knowledge of rabies pathogenesis has been learned mainly from studies performed in experimental animal models, and a number of unresolved issues remain. In contrast with the neural pathway of spread, there is still no credible evidence that hematogenous spread of rabies virus to the central nervous system plays a significant role in rabies pathogenesis. Although neuronal dysfunction has been thought to explain the neurological disease in rabies, recent evidence indicates that structural cha…

BACKGROUND: Authorities have pledged to eliminate canine rabies by 2020 in Cambodia, a country with a very high rabies burden. Logistic and financial access to timely and adequate postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) is essential for preventing rabies in humans.
METHODS: We undertook a survey of the few identified sites where PEP rabies vaccination and rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) are available in Cambodia. We examined the Rabies Prevention Center at Institut Pasteur du Cambodge (rpc@ipc) database and rpc@ipc order forms for 2012 to assess vaccine and RIG use. We conducted a rapid internet survey of…

UNLABELLED: Rabies is responsible for 50,000 deaths per year worldwide. Mainland France has been officially freed from rabies in non-flying animals since 2001.
METHOD: We wanted to provide an update on the French situation, using published data, and describe possible options since official guidelines are lacking.
RESULTS: Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) (early and careful cleaning and dressing of the wound, vaccination, and in case of high-risk exposure, injection of specific anti-rabies immunoglobulins) is known to be efficient except in rare cases. It is recommended after grade II contact …

Recently travelers who were bitten by possibly rabid animals in rabies endemic regions and returned to Japan have increased in number. About half of them received rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (RPEP) with one or more doses of foreign-made rabies vaccines (FRV) in the local medical institutions. FRV, however, are not available in Japan so we have to continue the RPEP with Japanese rabies vaccine (JRV). It has not been demonstrated that an anti-rabies antibody induced with JRV following Vero cell rabies vaccine (PVRV) or chick embryo cell rabies vaccine (PCEC) could be high enough to prevent …

Rabies is a zoonosis ending fatally in all mammals, including humans. Unlike the other mammals, this disease is usually not fatal in bats. Rabies is caused by lyssaviruses which are divided into several distinct phylogroups comprising 15 known viruses. It is believed that the original hosts of all lyssaviruses are bats. Classical rabies virus (RABV) occurs in bats across Americas and represents the major cause of rabies in humans and domestic animals there. European bat lyssavirus type 1 (EBLV-1) and European bat lyssavirus type 2 (EBLV-2) are the most frequently diagnosed lyssaviruses in Eura…

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a neglected zoonotic disease. There is a sparsity of data on this disease with regard to the incidence of human and animal disease in many low and middle income countries. Furthermore, rabies results in a large economic impact and a high human burden of disease. Kazakhstan is a large landlocked middle income country that gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 and is endemic for rabies.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We used detailed public health and veterinary surveillance data from 2003 to 2015 to map where livestock rabies is occurring. We also estimate th…

Most cases of rabies in travelers are associated with dog bites and occur in adults who are commonly migrants. The incidence of injuries to travelers caused by potentially rabid animals is approximately 0.4 % per month of stay. Dogs account for 51 % of cases, but nonhuman primates are the leading animals responsible for injuries in travelers returning from Southeast Asia. Travel to Southeast Asia, India and North Africa, young age, and traveling for tourism are risk factors for potential exposure. More than 70 % of travelers are not immunized prior to departing and do not receive adequate care…

Rabies is a central nervous system (CNS) disease that is almost invariably fatal. The causative agent is rabies virus (RV), a negative-stranded RNA virus of the rhabdovirus family. RV pathogenesis, like that of other viruses, is a multigenic trait. Recent findings indicate that in addition to the RV G protein viral elements that regulate gene expression, especially expression of the L gene, are also likely to play a role in RV pathogenesis. In vivo, RV infects almost exclusively neurons, and neuroinvasiveness is the major defining characteristic of a classical RV infection. A key factor in the…

Mass oral vaccination of wild animals against rabies which was introduced in 1993, shows a positive impact on the epizootic situation of rabies in Poland. Sources of wild and domestic animal rabies are present on the east part of the country, uncovered by oral vaccination. In parallel to the decreasing number of rabies cases in animals, the number of persons exposed to rabid animals also declines. No case of rabies in human beings has been reported in Poland since 1986. Out of 7172 persons vaccinated in Poland against rabies, only 1408 (19%) were bitten by or were in contact with a rabid anima…

Rabies is one of the most severe infectious diseases in Ethiopia, with many cases of the disease diagnosed in various parts of the country. The dog is the species most responsible for human exposure, with over 98% of the human cases and vaccinations due to the bite of rabid or suspected rabid dogs. Most of the treatments are due to stray dogs that bite, escape and are not available for observation. Most of the people who die of rabies are under 40 years of age, and among adults, the majority of these are males, suggesting that the close contact the young men have with dogs causes them to have …

A 57-year-old veterinary surgeon developed rabies 174 days after injury during an oral palpation of a rabid cow. He had been vaccinated prophylactically with Duck embryo vaccine several months before exposure but never had his serum antibody level controlled. He died 45 days later. The prodromal and encephalitic stage lasted 5 days each. Intensive supportive medical treatment was given from the beginning of the paralytic stage. The clinical course was complicated by progredient respiratory failure, diabetes insipidus, severe hypotension, and increase of intracranial pressure. The diagnosis of …
