Synthesis of Ternary, Quaternary, Quinary, and Senary Monazite Phosphate Single Crystals via High-Temperature Flux Crystal Growth and of Bulk Samples via a Low-Temperature Microwave-Assisted Hydrothermal Route.

The safe management of high-level radioactive waste requires durable waste forms that ensure long-term isolation. Monazite-based (LnPO4) materials are known to be excellent waste form materials. We demonstrated that complex monazite compositions can be synthesized via a facile low-temperature method that can potentially facilitate the sequestration of existing nuclear waste. We investigated flux crystal growth and low-temperature syntheses of complex monazite compositions, including ternary, quaternary, quinary, and senary systems. Single crystals, including AmPO4, were obtained via high-tempe…

A Radiological Emergency Health and Safety Plan for City Agencies Without First Response Responsibilities.

In New York City, the citywide radiological response plan charges 4 primary agencies with various roles and objectives: police, fire, health … m (dosimetry), (3) environmental surveillance of the site for worker and public protection, and (4) radioactive waste control. These components of RHASP are supported by 2 functions inherent in successful radiation safety programs: documentation and quality assurance of the collected radiation safety data. In this article, we discuss the components of RHASP and the …

Microbial involvement in iodine cycle: mechanisms and potential applications.

Stable iodine isotopes are essential for humans as they are necessary for producing thyroid gland hormones. However, there are hazardous radioactive iodine isotopes that are emitted into the environment through radioactive waste generated by nuclear power plants, nuclear weapon tests, and medical practice. Due to the biophilic character of iodine radionuclides and their enormous biomagnification potential, their elimination from contaminated environments is essential to prevent the spread of radioactive pollution in ecosystems. Since microorganisms play a vital role in controlling iodine cycli…

A Redox-Active Metal-Sulfide Framework for Selective and Synergistic Removal of Iodate.

Efficient removal of iodate (IO3-) from radioactive liquid waste is highly desirable for radioactive waste management and environmental protection but remains a formidable challenge due to the low adsorption capacity or insufficient removal depth resulting from the weak affinity of conventional single-function adsorbents. Here, we report a redox-active metal-sulfide framework (SCU-SnS) that enables the highly efficient decontamination of IO3- through a synergistic effect: efficient reduction of IO3- to I- by S2- sites, combined with an extremely high binding affinity between Sn4+ sites and the…

Deciphering indigenous bacteria in compacted bentonite through a novel and efficient DNA extraction method: Insights into biogeochemical processes within the Deep Geological Disposal of nuclear waste concept.

Compacted bentonites are one of the best sealing and backfilling clays considered for use in Deep Geological Repositories of radioactive wastes. However, an in-depth understanding of their behavior after placement in the repository is required, including if the activity of indigenous microorganisms affects safety conditions. Here we provide an optimized phenol:chloroform based protocol that facilitates higher DNA-yields when other methods failed. To demonstrate the efficiency of this method, DNA was extracted from acetate-treated bentonites compacted at 1.5 and 1.7 g/cm3 densities after 24 mon…

Preliminary measurements of surface removable NORM activity in the WIPP underground.

The results of correlating surface removable activity to that measured on a fixed air sampler is reported. It was found from over 40 smears taken during a two week period that surface removable activity from Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) can be predicted to be within a factor of 2 or 3 using either a fixed air sampler measurement or even another smear measurement from a specified surface. The method is being used to take credit for background surface removable activity in similar fashion to a background count for any other radiation detector. The utility of this technique is

Measurements of radiation level in petroleum products and wastes in Riyadh City Refinery.

Recent concern has been devoted to the hazard arising from naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) in oil and gas facilities. Twenty-seven petroleum samples were collected from Riyadh Refinery. Fourteen samples were products and 13 were waste samples; three of them were scale samples and 10 were sludge samples. The specific radioactivities of (238)U, (232)Th, (226)Ra, (224)Ra, (40)K, and (235)U for all samples were determined using high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry. The radium equivalent activity, radiation hazard indices and absorbed dose rate in air for all waste samples were e

Bentonite-goethite composite Colloids: Unraveling the mechanisms of strontium adsorption inhibition in claystone for nuclear waste geologic repositories.

The management and disposal of radioactive waste, especially strontium (Sr), is a critical aspect of sustainable nuclear energy utilization. This study examines the adsorption of Sr onto the surrounding rock of a high-radioactivity geological repository, with a specific emphasis on the Suhongtu claystone and its interaction with bentonite‒goethite composite colloids. By utilizing a sequence of static adsorption experiments, adsorption kinetic models, and diverse spectroscopic methods, this research aims to shed light on the adsorption mechanism of Sr influenced by these composite colloids. The…

One perspective on stakeholder involvement at Hanford.

The Hanford nuclear site in Washington State had a major role in the production of nuclear weapons materials during the Manhattan Project in World War II and during the Cold War that followed. The production of weapons-grade radionuclides produced a large amount of radioactive byproducts that have been stored since the mid-1900s at the Hanford Site. These by-product radionuclides have leaked from containment facilities into the groundwater, contaminated buildings used for radionuclide processing, and also contaminated the nuclear reactors used to produce weapons-grade uranium and plutonium. The study and control of environmental radioactivity and its relevance to the control of other environmental contaminants.

The history of radioactivity as an environmental contaminant is briefly traced. The basic principles concerning radiological protection and their application to the natural environment are reviewed. The relevance of these aspects of radiological protection philosophy and methodology to the control of other environmental contaminants is examined, especially the development and application of basic standards to waste disposal situations. It is concluded that many of the control procedures developed for radioactivity could be applied with advantage to other potential pollutants.

Microbial responses to elevated temperature: Evaluating bentonite mineralogy and copper canister corrosion within the long-term stability of deep geological repositories of nuclear waste.

Deep Geological Repositories (DGRs) consist of radioactive waste contained in corrosion-resistant canisters, surrounded by compacted bentonite clay, and buried few hundred meters in a stable geological formation. The effects of bentonite microbial communities on the long-term stability of the repository should be assessed. This study explores the impact of harsh conditions (60 °C, highly-compacted bentonite, low water activity), and acetate:lactate:sulfate addition, on the evolution of microbial communities, and their effect on the bentonite mineralogy, and corrosion of copper material under a…

Presence of aromatic-rich organic matter and its characterization in grout materials: Implications for radionuclide immobilization.

Grout materials are commonly used to immobilize low-level radioactive waste. Organic moieties can be unintentionally present in common ingredients used to make these grout waste forms, which may result in the formation of organo-radionuclide species. These species can positively or negatively affect the immobilization efficiency. However, the presence of organic carbon compounds is rarely considered in models or characterized chemically. Here, we quantify the organic pool of grout formulations with and without slag, as well as the individual dry ingredients used to make the grout samples (ordi…

An Enzymatic Platform for Late-Stage (Radio)isotope Labelling of Oligonucleotides With Methyltransferases.

The development of therapeutic nucleic acids has become a cornerstone of modern drug discovery. To support the clinical translation of these modalities, radiolabelled analogues are vital for absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion (ADME) studies, particularly for quantitative whole-body autoradiography (QWBA). Access to such radio probes is limited because established methods for the preparation of 3H-labelled oligonucleotides are characterised by high costs, extensive lead times, low specific activity and the generation of substantial radioactive waste. To address these limitations…

Carbon bed mercury emissions control for mixed waste treatment.

Mercury has various uses in nuclear fuel reprocessing and other nuclear processes, and so it is often present in radioactive and mixed (radioactive and hazardous) wastes. Compliance with air emission regulations such as the Hazardous Waste Combustor (HWC) Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) standards can require off-gas mercury removal efficiencies up to 99.999% for thermally treating some mixed waste streams. Test programs have demonstrated this level of off-gas mercury control using fixed beds of granular sulfur-impregnated activated carbon. Other results of these tests include (1)

Occurrence and behavior of uranium and thorium series radionuclides in the Permian shale hydraulic fracturing wastes.

Over the last decade, there has been a rapid growth in the use of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) to recover unconventional oil and gas in the Permian Basin of southeastern New Mexico (NM) and western Texas. Fracking generates enormous quantities of wastes that contain technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive materials (TENORM), which poses risks to human health and the environment because of the relatively high doses of radioactivity. However, very little is known about the chemical composition and radioactivity levels of Permian Basin fracking wastes. Here, we report chemical
