PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The number of clinical trials on the use of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) for the management of cancer therapy-related complications is growing steadily. One of the side-effects that is under investigation is acute radiodermatitis (ARD), an inflammatory skin reaction caused by radiotherapy. In this review, an overview is given on the state of art of the application of PBMT for the prevention and management of ARD.

A woman presented with a chronic radiodermatitis after a percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) for unstable angina. Two PTCAs had already been performed previously. Although rare, these chronic radiodermatitis have been described after multiple cardiac catheterization procedures as a result of cumulative X-ray exposure. Prevention must therefore be implemented.

BACKGROUND: Fluoroscopy and cineradiography used during coronary angiography expose patients to some of the highest doses of ionizing radiation in diagnostic radiology. The possibility of radiation-induced damage has been discussed by several authors in the past. BACKGROUND: Chronic x-ray dermatitis in professionals is a frequent problem for doctors in our country due to the fact that many of them widely used radiotherapy without any protection 15-20 years ago. Surgery has been the most accepted treatment, though it generally decreases hand function.

We report acute radiation dermatitis on a patient's back and left arm, which developed 4 weeks after endovascular embolisation of a spinal arteriovenous malformation. Vesciculation and erosions were followed by a gradual re-epithelisation of the skin resulting in rectangular hyperpigmented patches that resolved almost completely within 1 month.
