Phase of firing does not reflect temporal order in sequence memory of humans and recurrent neural networks.

The temporal order of a sequence of events has been thought to be reflected in the ordered firing of neurons at different phases of theta os … een phase of firing and item position. However, the firing order did not match item order. Training recurrent neural networks to perform an analogous task, we also show the generation of theta oscillations, theta phase-dependent firing related to item position and, again, no match between firing and item order. Rather, our results suggest a mechanistic link between phase o …

Single-modal and multi-modal false arrhythmia alarm reduction using attention-based convolutional and recurrent neural networks.

This study proposes a deep learning model that effectively suppresses the false alarms in the intensive care units (ICUs) without ignoring the true alarms using single- and multi- modal biosignals. Most of the current work in the literature are either rule-based methods, requiring prior knowledge of arrhythmia analysis to build rules, or classical machine learning approaches, depending on hand-engineered features. In this work, we apply convolutional neural networks to automatically extract time-invariant features, an attention mechanism to put more emphasis on the important regions of the seg

Multistability of delayed recurrent neural networks with piecewise non-monotonic activation functions and its applications to associative memory.

This paper studies the multistability of delayed recurrent neural networks (DRNNs) with piecewise non-monotonic activation functions and their application to associative memory. To address the limitation of conventional delayed recurrent neural networks, which rely on monotonic or saturated activation functions and thus struggle to achieve high-density multistable structures, we construct an oscillatory activation function with piecewise non-monotonic characteristics. Under a unified theoretical framework, a rigorous analysis of the network's equilibrium structure and stability is conducted. B…

Hybrid Convolutional-Gated Recurrent Neural Network for Robust Mobile Health Activities Classification.

Mobile health has become a popular option for patients to monitor and analyze their body activities and vital signs using their mobile devices, such as smartphones and smartwatches. In addition, the healthcare community has begun using artificial intelligence (AI) models to automate the diagnosis of abnormal conditions and diseases, particularly in real-time emergency scenarios. This article introduces a new deep learning model to automatically identify daily body activities. We propose a hybrid AI model that combines a convolutional neural network (CNN) and a gated recurrent unit (GRU) for ro

Passenger ride comfort estimation based on the recurrence plot technique and convolutional neural network.

Ride comfort has become a crucial evaluation metric for autonomous vehicles. Existing studies on passenger comfort state estimation mainly rely on single-source vehicle data and traditional machine learning models for state estimation, which struggle to adequately capture local features in multi-source time-series signals and their nonlinear relationships with subjective perception, resulting in limited classification accuracy. To address this issue, this paper proposes a passenger ride comfort state (discomfort/no-discomfort) estimation method based on the fusion of human-vehicle data. Vehicl

LSTM-based recurrent neural network provides effective short term flu forecasting.

BACKGROUND: Influenza virus is responsible for a yearly epidemic in much of the world. To better predict short-term, seasonal variations in flu infection rates and possible mechanisms of yearly infection variation, we trained a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM)-based deep neural network on historical Influenza-Like-Illness (ILI), climate, and population data. METHODS: Data were collected from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Center for Environmental Information (NCEI), and the United States Census Bureau. The model was initially built in Python using the Keras AP

Gating Attractor Dynamics of Frontal Cortex Under Acupuncture via Recurrent Neural Network.

Acupuncture can regulate the functions of human body and improve the cognition of brain. However, the mechanism of acupuncture manipulations remains unclear. Here, we hypothesis that the frontal cortex plays a gating role in information routing of brain network under acupuncture. To that end, the gating effect of frontal cortex under acupuncture is analyzed in combination with EEG data of acupuncture at Zusanli acupoints. In addition, recurrent neural network (RNN) is used to reproduce the dynamics of frontal cortex under normal state and acupuncture state. From low-dimensional view, it is sho

Tinnitus-like "hallucinations" elicited by sensory deprivation in an entropy maximization recurrent neural network.

Sensory deprivation has long been known to cause hallucinations or "phantom" sensations, the most common of which is tinnitus induced by hearing loss, affecting 10-20% of the population. An observable hearing loss, causing auditory sensory deprivation over a band of frequencies, is present in over 90% of people with tinnitus. Existing plasticity-based computational models for tinnitus are usually driven by homeostatic mechanisms, modeled to fit phenomenological findings. Here, we use an objective-driven learning algorithm to model an early auditory processing neuronal network, e.g., in the dor

Dispersion based recurrent neural network model for methane monitoring in Albertan tailings ponds.

Bitumen extraction for the production of synthetic crude oil in Canada's Athabasca Oil Sands industry has recently come under spotlight for being a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. A major cause of concern is methane, a greenhouse gas produced by the anaerobic biodegradation of hydrocarbon in oil sands residues, or tailing, stored in settle basins commonly known as oil sands tailing ponds. In this work, we build a data-driven modeling framework to determine the methane emitting potential of these tailing ponds and have future methane projections using a Dispersion based Recurren

Neural network models for diagnosing recurrent aphthous ulcerations from clinical oral images.

In the medical field, Artificial Intelligence (AI) for diagnostic processes, particularly through deep learning techniques, has become increasingly advanced. Minor trauma, such as accidental cheek biting, sharp dental edges, or poorly fitting dentures, typically causes painful mouth ulcers and bump-like sores inside the mouth. Traditionally, diagnosing these ulcers involves a dentist or physician performing a physical examination, visually assessing the sores, and asking detailed questions about their size, location, duration, and related symptoms. Our research focuses on the advanced classifi

Frame forecasting in cine MRI using the PCA respiratory motion model: comparing recurrent neural networks trained online and transformers.

Respiratory-induced motion complicates accurate irradiation of thoraco-abdominal tumors during radiotherapy, as treatment-system latency entails target-location uncertainties. This work addresses frame forecasting in dynamic chest and liver MRI to compensate for such delays. We investigate RNNs trained with online learning algorithms, enabling adaptation to changing respiratory patterns via on-the-fly parameter updates, and transformers, increasingly common in time-series forecasting for their ability to capture long-term dependencies. Experiments were conducted using twelve sagittal thoracic

Real-time respiratory motion forecasting with online learning of recurrent neural networks for accurate targeting in externally guided radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In lung radiotherapy, infrared cameras can track reflective objects on the chest to estimate tumor motion due to breathing. However, treatment system latencies hinder radiation beam precision. Real-time recurrent learning (RTRL), the conventional online learning approach for training recurrent neural networks (RNNs), is a potential solution that can learn patterns within non-stationary respiratory data but has high complexity. This research assesses the capabilities of resource-efficient online algorithms for RNNs-unbiased online recurrent optimization (UORO), sparse …

Convolutional Recurrent Neural Networks to Characterize the Circulation Component in the Thoracic Impedance during Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest.

Pulse detection during out-of-hospital cardiac arrest remains challenging for both novel and expert rescuers because current methods are inaccurate and time-consuming. There is still a need to develop automatic methods for pulse detection, where the most challenging scenario is the discrimination between pulsed rhythms (PR, pulse) and pulseless electrical activity (PEA, no pulse). Thoracic impedance (TI) acquired through defibrillation pads has been proven useful for detecting pulse as it shows small fluctuations with every heart beat. In this study we analyse the use of deep learning techniqu

An intelligent framework for visually impaired people through indoor object Detection-Based assistive system using YOLO with recurrent neural networks.

Vision is a fundamental sense that profoundly impacts daily life and independence. For visually impaired people (VIP), the absence or impairment of this sense presents significant challenges, particularly in navigating their environment and identifying objects independently. A considerable challenge for visually impaired individuals is the inability to navigate independently and identify objects, which restricts their daily activities and routines. Various investigations have been conducted in the domain of real-time object detection (OD) using deep learning (DL). DL-based techniques are shown

Predicting the Progression of Mild Cognitive Impairment to Alzheimer's Dementia Using Recurrent Neural Networks With a Series of Neuropsychological Tests.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The prevalence of Alzheimer's dementia (AD) is increasing as populations age, causing immense suffering for patients, families, and communities. Unfortunately, no treatments for this neurodegenerative disease have been established. Predicting AD is therefore becoming more important, because early diagnosis is the best way to prevent its onset and delay its progression. METHODS: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is the stage between normal cognition and AD, with large variations in its progression. The disease can be effectively managed by accurately predicting the probab

LSTM-Based Recurrent Neural Network Predicts Influenza-Like-Illness in Variable Climate Zones.

BACKGROUND: Influenza virus is responsible for a recurrent, yearly epidemic in most temperate regions of the world. Flu has been responsible for a high disease burden in recent years, despite the confounding presence of SARS-CoV-2. However, the mechanisms behind seasonal variance in flu burden are not well understood. This study seeks to expand understanding of the impact of variable climate regions on seasonal flu trends. To that end, three climate regions have been selected. Each region represents a different ecological zone and provides different weather patterns. METHODS: A long short-ter

Dual-attention-based recurrent neural network for hand-foot-mouth disease prediction in Korea.

Hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) is a viral disease that occurs primarily in children. Meteorological factors have a significant impact on its popularity annually in Korea. This study proposes a new HFMD prediction model using a dual-attention-based recurrent neural network (DA-RNN) and important weather factors for HFMD in Korea. First, suspected cases of HFMD in each state were predicted using meteorological factors from the DA-RNN. Second, the weather factors were divided into six categories: temperature, wind, rainfall, day length, humidity, and air pollution to conduct sensitivity analysis.
