Low energy availability (LEA) is a central aetiological factor in Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs) and is frequently associated with impaired skeletal health in athletic populations, although skeletal responses can be heterogeneous. However, athletes with apparently similar energetic and training exposures can differ in bone mineral density, bone turnover and bone stress injury risk, indicating that additional physiological mediators may modify the skeletal response to under-fuelling. The gut microbiome has emerged as a plausible candidate because microbial metabolites, intestinal ba…

"Food is fuel" is a widely used phrase in sport settings intended to emphasize the importance of nutrition for performance. While nutrition is essential for health and success, this framing may unintentionally reinforce a narrow, performance-oriented understanding of eating that has implications for athletes' relationships with food and their bodies. Athletes are at heightened risk for eating concerns, low energy availability, and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs), and aspects of sport culture may contribute to rigid, rule-based approaches to eating. This commentary argues that "food …

PURPOSE: Despite the introduction of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-s) in 2014, there is evidence to suggest that male endurance athletes still present with a high prevalence of low energy availability (LEA). Previous findings suggest that energy availability (EA) status is strongly correlated with impairments in endocrine function such as reduced leptin, triiodothyronine (T3), and insulin, and elevated bone loss. This study aimed to report the current EA status, endocrine function and bone health of highly trained Irish male endurance athletes.

BACKGROUND: Adequate energy intake is crucial for athletic performance and recovery. However, many endurance athletes experience Low Energy Availability (LEA), which, if prolonged, can detrimentally impact both health and performance.
METHODS: A total of 55 endurance athletes (23 females; 45 ± 13 years, 1.64 ± 0.06 m, 64.4 ± 11.4 kg and 32 males; 44 ± 13 years, 1.76 ± 0.18 m, 78.8 ± 9.2 kg) underwent physical assessments and completed questionnaires on dietary habits, training loads, and psychological stress. Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) scans measured bone mineral dens

Disordered eating behavior (DE) and eating disorders (EDs) are of great concern because of their associations with physical and mental health risks and, in the case of athletes, impaired performance. The syndrome originally known as the Female Athlete Triad, which focused on the interaction of energy availability, reproductive function, and bone health in female athletes, has recently been expanded to recognize that Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) has a broader range of negative effects on body systems with functional impairments in both male and female athletes. Athletes in leanne…

OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this study was to investigate the risk of eating disorders, exercise addiction, depression, and low energy availability (LEA) in Danish female and male elite compared with sub-elite athletes.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional study.
SETTING: An online survey.
PARTICIPANTS: A total of 410 elite athletes (mean age 20.1 years, 51% females) and 206 sub-elite athletes (mean age 21.3 years, 52% females) from 15 different sports.Assessment of Risk Factors: Eating Disorders, exercise addiction, depression, and LEA.

METHODS: Participants were track and field coaches (369 males and 43 females) with Japan Sport Association certification and they completed an anonymous survey on their knowledge of medical problems pertinent to female athletes including whether the coaches knew about the female athlete triad and relative energy deficiency in sports; their feelings about female athletes' use of contraceptive pills; whether…

Energy availability (EA) is defined the difference in energy intake and exercise energy expenditure. Reduction of EA (i.e. Low energy availability, LEA) often causes abnormalities of reproduction system and drastic bone loss in some female athletes, the phenomenon is called as female athlete triad. More than ever before, it is considered a serious problem, the reason of these are (1) the syndrome occurred in female athletes but also male athletes, (2) LEA is leads to dysfunction of various organs other than reproductive system (Relative energy deficiency in sport, RED-S). On the other hand, we…

Recurrent stress fractures rarely affect the same athlete. We present the case of a female triathlete who suffered multiple stress fractures in both tibias, the right fibula, and the left femoral neck. Conservative treatment was instituted in all episodes, with rest, reduced training load, and physical therapy rehabilitation. The relative energy deficiency in sport syndrome, along with an eating disorder, training overload, and osteopenia, was identified as a risk factor. Although rare, multiple stress fractures can occur in female triathletes. These patients must be screened for risk factors …

Dancers are susceptible to relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S), specifically low bone mineral density (BMD). Little is known about how dancers' BMD compares to other athletic populations. Sports medicine, as a classical cross-sectional subject, includes diverse topics which show gender-specific differences and thus require a differentiated consideration. Evidence-based research exists in the field of musculoskeletal medicine, for example, in relation to cruciate ligament injuries or concussions. Marked differences in trainability (both muscular and cardiac or pulmonary) are also emerging. Pregnancy and sport is also a topic of increasing interest. Close interdisciplinary care of female athletes, knowledge of physiological changes during pregnancy and contraindications to sports

Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) syndrome is associated with undesirable health and performance outcomes. The aetiology of RED-S syndrome is low energy availability (LEA). LEA has been reported in male athletes in various sports, but there is little information in team sports. Therefore, the aims of this study were to assess the point-prevalence of surrogate markers of LEA in elite male volleyball players and examine the association between low and normal total-testosterone (TES) on endocrine markers, resting metabolic rate, bone mineral density (BMD), and history of injury/illness.…
