Effects of dried Azolla pinnata supplementation on growth, biochemistry, and reproduction in female rabbits.

This study evaluated the impact of incorporating varying levels of dried Azolla pinnata as a partial or full substitute for soybean meal protein on growth performance, productivity, and selected biochemical, immunological, hormonal, and antioxidant parameters in New Zealand White (NZW) female rabbits. The study conducted at the South Sinai Research Station of the Desert Research Center, Egypt, from May to November 2023. The trial involved 45 eight-week-old NZW female rabbits. These were randomly assigned to three dietary groups: a control group fed a standard concentrate diet, a group where 50

Melatonin in Livestock Production: Bridging Chronobiology, Health, and Sustainable Outcomes.

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a phylogenetically ancient hormone synthesized primarily in the pineal gland in response to light-dark cycles, where it regulates circadian rhythms, but it is also produced in peripheral tissues, including the gastrointestinal tract. In livestock, melatonin extends beyond chronobiology to modulate immune function, reproduction, metabolism, and adaptation to environmental stressors such as heat, transport, and high production intensity. This review consolidates current knowledge on melatonin's application in animal nutrition, tracing from its discover

Feeding a persistent laying hen from day 0 until 110 weeks of age: Performance impact.

The amount and ratio of protein and energy fed during rearing and laying might influence the growth curve, body composition and laying persistency of hens. We studied the influence of a low or high apparent fecal digestible (AFD) Lys level in all rearing diets and constant or reduced ME level and source during laying (reducing energy over time high oil = REHO; constant energy high oil = CE; reducing energy over time low oil = RELO) on growth and laying persistency in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangements. Per treatment, 240 one-day-old Dekalb White pullets were divided over 8 pens and housed until 11

Hypomorphism of a Novel Long ERα Isoform Causes Severe Reproductive Dysfunctions in Female Mice.

Estrogen receptor alpha (ERα)-mediated estrogen signaling plays a pivotal role in both reproductive and nonreproductive functions. Transcriptional regulation of the ERα gene is highly complex, with multiple transcript variants being differentially produced across the tissues. However, tissue-specific variation and physiological specificity of the ERα variants are not yet fully understood. In an attempt to generate a Cre-dependently restorable ERα-null mouse for functional genetic studies, we unexpectedly produced ERα hypomorphic mice with biased downregulation of a previously unappreciated lon

Fertility and the transition dairy cow.

The transition from pregnancy to lactation (i.e. the transition period) is a time of significant metabolic challenge, with a several-fold increase in a cow's requirement for energy, protein and minerals within days of calving. A successful transition involves the initiation and coordination of changes in multiple tissues that facilitate the provision of these nutrients to the cow and, more specifically, to the mammary gland, often at the considerable expense of other tissues. Failure to coordinate the necessary changes effectively results in transition period maladaptation, which can broadly b

The adaptive value of secondary males in the polygynous multi-level society of hamadryas baboons.

OBJECTIVES: One-male social systems are usually characterized by polygyny and reproductive exclusion by a single resident male. Sometimes, however, secondary males join these groups, and this may carry fitness costs and/or benefits to the resident male. In hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas hamadryas), which live in one-male units (OMUs) with female defense polygyny within a multi-level social system, secondary "follower" males often reside in OMUs. Our aim here is to examine possible benefits of these secondary males to hamadryas resident males. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using 6 years of data f

Macroscopic features of the venous drainage of the reproductive system of the male ostrich (Struthio camelus).

The macroscopic features of the venous drainage of the reproductive system of the male ostrich were studied in six pre-pubertal and three sexually mature and active birds. Each testis was drained by one to four testicular veins. The right testicular veins drained the right testis and epididymis and its appendix to the caudal vena cava and to the right common iliac vein, whereas the left testicular veins drained the left testis and epididymis and its appendix exclusively to the left common iliac vein. A number of variations in the drainage pattern based on the point of entry and number of testi

[Toxicologic and nutritional aspects of nitrates and nitrites].

The toxic action of nitrates and nitrites has often been summarized by methemoglobinemia and nitrosation of amines inducing carcinogenic effects; these two impacts are spectacular, but they hide varying more or less insidious actions recently studied and perceived. In the NO3/NO2 couple, it is accepted that especially nitrite ion lays down a toxicological problem, probably because of its particular chemical reactivity: nitrite ion, which is the base of nitrous acid HNO2 (pKa = 3.36) can react with many functional groups from dietary or endogenous origin; it is also a reducing agent, only oxida

Seasonality of reproduction in gilts and sows.

In the wild, the pig adapts her reproductive functions according to the seasonal changes in the environment, such as the ambient temperature and availability of food. Like in other short day seasonal breeders, breeding season is favoured in the mid winter in order to provide the offspring with the best chances to survive four months later. Seasonal changes in environment are perceived mainly by the ability of the pig to recognise seasonal changes in photoperiod. This information is mediated through changes in the activity of the pineal gland to secret melatonin, essentially by the same mechani

The underlying mechanisms of vertebrate seasonal reproduction.

Animals make use of changes in photoperiod to adapt their physiology to the forthcoming breeding season. Comparative studies have contributed to our understanding of the mechanisms of seasonal reproduction in vertebrates. Birds are excellent models for studying these phenomena because of their rapid and dramatic responses to changes in photoperiod. Deep brain photoreceptors in birds perceive and transmit light information to the pars tuberalis (PT) in the pituitary gland, where the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is produced. This PT-TSH locally increases the level of the bioactive thyroid h

Dietary supplementation with L-carnitine and L-arginine improves testicular development and reproductive potential on aged broiler breeder roosters.

This study examined the impact of L-arginine (L-Arg) and L-carnitine (LC) supplements, alone and combined, on blood parameters, lipid peroxidation, testicular histology, reproductive performance, and hormones in 50-week-old roosters. Thirty-two Arian breed broiler breeders were divided into four experimental groups in a completely randomized design. The treatments were: 1) control (CON); 2) diet with 150 mg/kg LC; 3) diet with 500 mg/kg L-Arg; and 4) diet with 75 mg/kg LC + 250 mg/kg L-Arg. The analysis of testicular tissue indicated that the malondialdehyde levels in the LC treatment group we

Dietary N-acetylcysteine supplementation improves antioxidant capacity and production performance of breeder hens and offspring.

This study investigated the effects of dietary N-acetylcysteine (NAC) supplementation on the antioxidant capacity and production performance of broiler breeder hens and their offspring. The breeder hens were randomly assigned to two groups: one received a corn-soybean meal-based control diet, while the other was supplemented with 1 g/kg NAC. Eggs from each group were randomly selected for incubation, and the offspring broilers were fed a basal diet. Dietary NAC treatment not only increased the albumen height and Haugh unit values of eggs but also improved fertilization rates (P < 0.05). Additi

Effects of short-term tryptophan supplementation in late-pregnant sows on reproductive performance and piglet growth.

Proper nutrition in late pregnancy is crucial for postpartum recovery and piglet growth. Improper management can lead to various physiological stresses in sows, resulting in reduced reproductive performance. This study aimed to assess the potential benefits of short-term supplementation with tryptophan on late-pregnant sows, fed from day 99 to day 114 of gestation. We divided 21 Landrace hybrid sows into three groups. The control group was fed a basal diet, while the experimental groups were fed basal diets supplemented with 0.1 % and 0.2 % tryptophan, respectively. Results indicated that feed

Effect of rumen-protected choline and methionine on physiological and metabolic disorders and reproductive indices of dairy cows.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of feeding different levels of ruminally protected methionine and choline on the incidence of physiological and metabolic disorders, production, and some of the reproductive indices of Holstein dairy cows. Forty Holstein dairy cows in their first and second lactation were used from 4-week pre-partum through 20-week post-partum and randomly assigned to receive one of the following treatments: 18 g/day of rumen-protected methionine (RPM), 60 g/day of rumen-protected choline (RPC), 18 g/day of RPM + 60 g/day of RPC, and neither supplement

Neuroendocrine interactions and seasonality.

Sheep in temperate latitudes are seasonal breeders. Of the different seasonal cues, photoperiod is the most reliable parameter and is used by animals as an indication of the time of the year to synchronize endogenous annual rhythms of reproduction and physiology. The photoperiodic information is transduced into neuroendocrine changes through variations in melatonin secretion from the pineal gland. Melatonin triggers variations in the secretion of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone, luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone (LHRH/LH/FSH) responsible for seasonal changes in reprodu

Effect of pre-conceptional nutrition and season on fetal growth during early pregnancy in sheep.

Gestational age in sheep can be closely predicted through ultrasonographic measurement of fetal bones when correlated to standardized fetal growth curves. However, these standardized curves do not account for factors that are known modulators of fetal growth, such as maternal nutrition or health status. Despite being seasonal breeders, and studies reporting an effect of season on birth weight, the influence of season on fetal growth has not been well characterized. In this study, we hypothesized that season of conception will affect fetal growth curves during mid-gestation and that pre-concept

Effects of isolated or combined exposure to sibutramine and rosuvastatin on reproductive parameters of adult male rats.

Many obese patients are exposed to hypolipidemic and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) drugs. Statins are one of the most marketed drugs in the world to treat dyslipidemia, while sibutramine, a SNRI drug, is prescribed in some countries to treat obesity and is detected as an additive in many adulterated weight loss supplements marketed worldwide. Previous studies reported adverse effects of isolated exposure to these drugs on male rat reproductive parameters. In the present work, we further investigated male reproductive toxicity of these drugs, administered in isolation or co
