Integrated research: an approach suited to research in geriatric medicine.

"Integrated research" appears increasingly in the biomedical literature yet is rarely defined. We describe the concept and examine its relevance to aging research. In a scoping review, PubMed was searched without date restriction for articles whose title contained the exact phrase "integrated research". Records were charted by year, field, article type and integration dimension. One hundred and six articles (1980-2026) spanned nursing, environmental science, imaging, pharmacology, oncology, infectious disease, psychiatry, public health and geriatrics. Six recurring meanings emerged: integratio

Research in OsteoChondritis of the Knee-ROCK Research Study Group.

Knee osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) is a condition affecting the articular cartilage and subchondral bone, predominantly in young athletes, which has historically suffered from a lack of high-quality evidence to guide diagnosis and treatment. In response to the 2010 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) clinical practice guideline, which identified critical gaps in OCD research, the Research in OsteoChondritis of the Knee (ROCK) group was established as an international, multicenter research consortium with the goal of advancing the clinical understanding and treatment of knee OCD.

Impact of research investment on scientific productivity of junior researchers.

There is a demand for providing evidence on the effectiveness of research investments on the promotion of novice researchers' scientific productivity and production of research with new initiatives and innovations. We used a mixed method approach to evaluate the funding effect of the New Investigator Fund (NIF) by comparing scientific productivity between award recipients and non-recipients. We reviewed NIF grant applications submitted from 2004 to 2013. Scientific productivity was assessed by confirming the publication of the NIF-submitted application. Online databases were searched, independ

When gain-of-function research is not "gain-of-function" research.

The recent publication of an influenza high‐yield vaccine backbone again raises questions about the regulation of gain‐of‐function research with dangerous pathogens. It shows that the current classification system based on select pathogens needs a more fine‐grained distinction to better identify those pathogens and their strains that have pandemic potential. Participatory action research, mixed methods, and research teams: learning from philosophically juxtaposed methodologies for optimal research outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Workplace health interventions incorporating qualitative and quantitative components (mixed methods) within a Participatory Action Research approach can increase understanding of contextual issues ensuring realistic interventions which influence health behaviour. Mixed methods research teams, however, face a variety of challenges at the methodological and expertise levels when designing actions and interventions. Addressing these challenges can improve the team's functionality and lead to higher quality health outcomes. In this paper we reflect on the data collection, implementatio

Research review: gene-environment interaction research in youth depression - a systematic review with recommendations for future research.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a major public health problem among youth, currently estimated to affect as many as 9% of US children and adolescents. The recognition that both genes (nature) and environments (nurture) are important for understanding the etiology of depression has led to a rapid growth in research exploring gene-environment interactions (GxE). However, there has been no systematic review of GxE in youth depression to date. METHODS: The goal of this article was to systematically review evidence on the contribution of GxE to the risk of child and adolescent depression. Through a sear

Promoting equitable research: What Greenland teaches us about research ethics.

Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland) is increasingly becoming a site for international research to examine global climate change, biodiversity, deposits of rare earth elements, and various existing health disparities. Yet, there is no comprehensive code of ethical guidelines for responsible and culturally centered research there. International researchers conducting research in Kalaallit Nunaat are bound by research ethics regulations governed their home countries and institutions, but these are varied and, perhaps most importantly, were established independently of Kalaallit (Greenlanders). Consequen

A Bibliometric Analysis of Strabismus Research Literature : Strabismus Research Trends.

BACKGROUND: Background: Strabismus, a common ocular disorder marked by misalignment of the visual axes, can impair depth perception and visual function, while also affecting facial appearance and psychosocial wellbeing. In recent years, the field has seen a growing body of research focusing on its pathogenesis, risk factors, and therapeutic approaches. However, the literature is still fragmented, making it difficult to assess overarching trends. Therefore, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis is needed to understand research developments and identify emerging hotspots in this domain. MATERIA

Patients' research priorities and participation in primary ciliary dyskinesia research.

INTRODUCTION: People living with chronic diseases can provide a unique perspective for research that often differs from that of healthcare professionals. This is particularly important in rare diseases like primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), with many knowledge gaps and limited research resources. We aimed to assess participation of patients and caregivers in PCD research and identify their research priorities in a mixed-method study. METHODS: We conducted in-depth, semistructured interviews with adults and adolescents with PCD, and caregivers of children with PCD. After verbatim transcription

Research Frameworks: Critical Components for Reporting Qualitative Health Care Research.

Qualitative health care research can provide insights into health care practices that quantitative studies cannot. However, the potential of qualitative research to improve health care is undermined by reporting that does not explain or justify the research questions and design. The vital role of research frameworks for designing and conducting quality research is widely accepted, but despite many articles and books on the topic, confusion persists about what constitutes an adequate underpinning framework, what to call it, and how to use one. This editorial clarifies some of the terminology an

The Potential Benefits of Research May Justify Certain Research Risks.

US regulations allow institutional review boards to approve pediatric clinical trials only when the risks are minimal or (in some cases) a minor increase over minimal, or when the risks are justified by a potential for direct benefit to the participants. But how should an institutional review board determine if the risks of pediatric clinical trials are justified by a potential for participant benefit? In this Ethics Rounds article, we consider which potential benefits can justify which research risks with a focus on randomized clinical trials.

Interdisciplinary health research: perspectives from a process evaluation research team.

BACKGROUND: Interdisciplinary health research (IDHR) is increasingly encouraged and is often a specific requirement for research grants provided by health research funding councils worldwide. There is consensus that research expertise and scholarship from a diverse range of disciplines are necessary to examine questions relating to complex health and social concerns for which single disciplinary approaches have been found inadequate. METHODS: This paper reports on the experiences of an interdisciplinary process evaluation research team working in the field of stroke care. RESULTS: Realising

Research sustainability: Lessons and opportunities for global biomedical research institutions.

Biomedical research and development (R&D) remains universally underinvested, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), despite LMIC investigators' significant scientific contributions. To address these challenges, various approaches aim to empower individuals and institutions to generate R&D within this ecosystem. However, limitations within these approaches persist, most notably their focus on individual capacity building and lack of a systems approach that adequately incorporates science management and operations. Considering the successes and gaps in the field, we propose resea
