Nonlinear measures of respiration: respiratory irregularity and increased chaos of respiration in patients with panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory irregularity has been previously reported in patients with panic disorder using time domain measures. However, the respiratory signal is not entirely linear and a few previous studies used approximate entropy (APEN), a measure of regularity of time series. We have been studying APEN and other nonlinear measures including a measure of chaos, the largest Lyapunov exponent (LLE) of heart rate time series, in some detail. In this study, we used these measures of respiration to compare normal controls (n = 18) and patients with panic disorder (n = 22) in addition to the trad…

[The performance of respirator alarms during simulated critical events in CMV/IPPV artificial respiration].

Alarm systems of ventilators enhance detection of possible critical events during artificial ventilation. Due to their significance, in some countries the alarm detection of ventilators is regulated by federal law. Up to now, no recommendations for the adjustment of alarm limits exist and only a few detailed investigations of the accuracy of alarm detection are available. METHODS. The response of four commercially available ventilators (Servoventilator 900C, Siemens, Inc.; Bennett 7200a, Hoyer, Inc.; Veolar, Hamilton, Inc.; EVITA, Dräger, Inc.) to critical events during artificial ventilation

Comparison of controlled respiration by the manual technique and with a respirator during general anaesthesia for abdominal operations.

These studies investigating the difference between controlled respiration performed by manual technique and controlled respiration applied by means of a respirator during general anaesthesia, and assessing the influence of these methods on the immediate post-operative condition of the patient were carried out on 75 patients during abdominal operations. Gasometric tests in arterial blood were performed before premedication, at intervals of 30 min from the beginning of operation, and 10 min. after the removal of the endotracheal tube. Controlled respiration with a respirator is a more favourable…

Neurogenic hypertension and the secrets of respiration.

Despite recent advances in the knowledge of the neural control of cardiovascular function, the cause of sympathetic overactivity in neurogenic hypertension remains unknown. Studies from our laboratory point out that rats submitted to chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH), an experimental model of neurogenic hypertension, present changes in the central respiratory network that impact the pattern of sympathetic discharge and the levels of arterial pressure. In addition to the fine coordination of respiratory muscle contraction and relaxation, which is essential for O2 and CO2 pulmonary exchanges, n

The neural control of respiration in lampreys.

This review focuses on past and recent findings that have contributed to characterize the neural networks controlling respiration in the lamprey, a basal vertebrate. As in other vertebrates, respiration in lampreys is generated centrally in the brainstem. It is characterized by the presence of a fast and a slow respiratory rhythm. The anatomical and the basic physiological properties of the neural networks underlying the generation of the fast rhythm have been more thoroughly investigated; less is known about the generation of the slow respiratory rhythm. Comparative aspects with respiratory g…

Purines, the carotid body and respiration.

The carotid body is essential to detecting levels of oxygen in the blood and initiating the compensatory response. Increasing evidence suggests that the purines ATP and adenosine make a key contribution to this signaling by the carotid body. The glomus cells release ATP in response to hypoxia. This released ATP can stimulate P2X receptors on the carotid body to elevate intracellular Ca(2+) and to produce an excitatory response. This released ATP can be dephosphorylated to adenosine by a series of extracellular enzymes, which in turn can stimulate A(1), A(2A) and A(2B) adenosine receptors. Leve

Does the pancreas move with respiration?

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The pancreas is a retroperitoneal organ and has been classically considered to be immobile on respiration. Recent radiological studies assessing the mobility of the pancreas have challenged this traditional concept. The present study was conducted to assess the movement of pancreas with respiration using fluoroscopy, a simple and inexpensive method. METHODS: Patients with chronic pancreatitis who had either pancreatic calcification evident on fluoroscopy or an indwelling pancreatic duct stent were studied. The movement of the pancreas was assessed under fluoroscopy by meas…

Ambulatory monitoring of respiration in anxiety.

An ambulatory monitor, body suit, and calibration procedure were developed to compare the respiration of seven patients with panic disorder and twelve normal volunteers. Subjects wore a body suit with Respitrace bands, connected to a portable respiratory monitor for a period of 24 hours. Breath by breath values for respiratory rate and tidal volume were computed every two minutes. There was a significant difference between patients and controls in their patterns of minute ventilation during sleep. Tidal volume, rather that respiratory rate increases characterized the periods of anxiety and lim…

EEG and respiration in Rett syndrome.

Forty-four EEGs of 16 girls with Rett syndrome are reviewed. The ages of the girls at the time of the EEG examination ranged from 8 months to 20 years. The normal and abnormal EEGs were scattered among the ages. Eight girls showed a pseudoperiodic pattern, the short bursts of high-amplitude slow waves tending to be associated with apnoea and the lower-amplitude faster rhythms with normal breathing or with hyperventilation. The mechanism of the abnormal breathing pattern, which was present solely in the waking state, is discussed. We suggest that the alternating apnoea and hyperventilation are

[Disorders of neuromuscular function and respiration].

Neuromuscular disorders of varying aetiology frequently lead to respiratory failure. This situation contrasts with the rare application of suitable tests of pulmonary function in this group of patients. As a result, respiratory complications are not detected until they have progressed to a terminal stage. With the sequential measurement of vital capacity, and a determination of the maximum inspiratory and expiratory pressures (PImax and PEmax), we have reliable and practicable diagnostic measures available that permit the recognition of respiratory failure at an early stage. This fact is of pa

[The role of the soft palate in respiration].

The soft palate is a muscular fold suspended from the posterior border of the bony palate and extending downwards and backwards into the oropharynx. Usually, the soft palate and tongue are in tight apposition, closing the oropharyngeal isthmus; the soft palate can however rise and touch the posterior pharyngeal wall, closing the nasopharynx: thus the soft palate regulates the flow of air through nose and/or mouth. During oronasal breathing (as during exercise, speech or smoking) the impedance of naso and oropharynx respectively is determined by the position of the soft palate. Hence partitioni
