[Proceedings: Cardiac therapy in chronic respiratory insufficiency].

The cardiac problems of patients with chronic respiratory failure are not confined to cor pulmonale. About one half of these patients also suffer from coronary heart disease with left heart failure, angina pectoris or arrhythmias. The specific difficulties surrounding cardiac therapy in these patients chiefly arise from the administration of digitalis, beta-adrenergic blocking and beta-adrenergic stimulating agents.

[Long terme oxygen therapy in chronic respiratory diseases].

LONG TERM OXYGEN THERAPY IN CHRONIC RESPIRATORY DISEASES. Survival of severe chronic respiratory failure with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is improved by long-term oxygen therapy. Other benefits exist for COPD and other causes of chronic respiratory failure. The indications for this restrictive (more 15 hours per day) treatment require measurements of arterial blood gases in adults. Several actors are involved: the specialist for the prescription, the service provider for supplying and maintaining the equipment, the patient and his entourage, the referring doctor to ensure that

Adoption of respiratory motion management in radiation therapy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: A survey on the patterns of practice of respiratory motion management (MM) was distributed to 111 radiation therapy facilities to inform the development of an end-to-end dosimetry audit including respiratory motion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The survey (distributed via REDCap) asked facilities to provide information specific to the combinations of MM techniques (breath-hold gating - BHG, internal target volume - ITV, free-breathing gating - FBG, mid-ventilation - MidV, tumour tracking - TT), sites treated (thorax, upper abdomen, lower abdomen), and fractionation regimes (

Minimally Invasive Surfactant Therapy and Noninvasive Respiratory Support.

Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) caused by surfactant deficiency is major cause for neonatal mortality and short- and long-term morbidity … pressure ventilation, this entails a risk of lung injury. Several strategies to combine noninvasive respiratory therapy with minimally invasive surfactant therapy have been described. Available data suggest that those strategies may improve outcome of premature infants with RDS.

Surfactant therapy for acute respiratory distress in children.

In children with acute lung injury the endogenous surfactant system is altered via a variety of different mechanisms, including inflammation, vascular dysfunction, oxidant injury, cellular injury and oedema. This article examines the pathophysiology of acute lung injury and surfactant use for treatment of acute respiratory failure in infants and children.

Acute respiratory failure during therapy for salicylate intoxication.

The case of a patient who developed severe acute respiratory failure during therapy for salicylate intoxication is described. The individual with aspirin overdose is at risk for this complication because of the potential for treatment modalities to cause or worsen lung edema initiated by the effects of salicylates on the pulmonary capillary bed.

Phage Therapy for Respiratory Infections: Opportunities and Challenges.

We are entering the post-antibiotic era. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical problem in chronic lung infections resulting in progressive respiratory failure and increased mortality. In the absence of emerging novel antibiotics to counter AMR infections, bacteriophages (phages), viruses that infect bacteria, have become a promising option for chronic respiratory infections. However, while personalized phage therapy is associated with improved outcomes in individual cases, clinical trials demonstrating treatment efficacy are lacking, limiting the therapeutic potential of this approach f

High-flow oxygen therapy in acute respiratory failure.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the comfort of oxygen therapy via high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) versus via conventional face mask in patients with acute respiratory failure. Acute respiratory failure was defined as blood oxygen saturation < 96% while receiving a fraction of inspired oxygen > or = 0.50 via face mask. METHODS: Oxygen was first humidified with a bubble humidifier and delivered via face mask for 30 min, and then via HFNC with heated humidifier for another 30 min. At the end of each 30-min period we asked the patient to evaluate dyspnea, mouth dryness, and overall comfort, on a visual anal
