Keratosis pilaris rubra successfully treated with topical sirolimus: Report of a case and review of the literature.

Keratosis pilaris rubra (KPR) is a subtype of keratosis pilaris (KP) presenting with numerous "grainlike" follicular papules in a background of confluent erythema most often affecting the face and upper extremities with persistence beyond puberty. Treatment has remained challenging with inconsistent benefit from topical therapies such as emollients, keratolytics, corticosteroids, and retinoids, though case reports documenting success with pulsed dye laser therapy have been found. We present a case of KPR in a 15-year-old boy who was successfully treated with topical sirolimus 1% cream.

Literature review and meta-analysis of topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitors and ocular blood flow.

The purpose of this literature review and meta-analysis was to determine what, if any, effects topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitors have on ocular hemodynamics in humans. A literature review and meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the effects of topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitors on ocular blood flow. Thirty-five articles were evaluated according to the inclusion criteria with 13 manuscripts meeting requirements for statistical analysis. Each study's effect size, defined as the change in blood flow measures after treatment with topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, was estimated us

Gallstones, obesity, insulin resistance, and obstructive sleep apnea - current knowledge on the topic: A literature review.

Cholelithiasis is one of the most common gastrointestinal diseases, which often manifests asymptomatically. Statistically, up to 20% of the global population is affected by gallbladder diseases. The prevalence of these conditions rapidly increases with the patient's age. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleeprelated breathing disorder that causes pharyngeal airway collapse, hypopnea and snoring. It is estimated that nearly half of the global population suffer from OSA. Cholelithiasis and OSA are separate medical conditions. However, they both affect a significant part of the general populati

Therapeutic efficacy of topical calcineurin inhibitors in plasma cell balanitis: case series and review of the literature.

Plasma cell balanitis of Zoon (PCBZ) and plasma cell vulvitis (PCV) are characterized as idiopathic, benign, chronic irritant mucositis. The clinical symptoms and signs usually persist or reappear after treatment withdrawal. Therefore, many therapies have been tried and are available. Recently, several reports of PCBZ and PCV treated with calcineurin inhibitors, tacrolimus and pimecrolimus, have been reported in the literature. We present 9 cases of PCBZ treated with tacrolimus 0.1% ointment (Protopic, Toyama, Japan) that showed good therapeutic results within 4 weeks of treatment, and we revi

Ototoxicity of Topical Antibiotic Ear Drops in Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media in Humans: A Review of the Literature.

An electronic search of the literature was performed for reported cases of ototoxicity associated with the use of topical antibiotic ear drops in humans. The dosage, duration, and type of ototoxic preparations involved were recorded. Due to the scant quantity of low-quality information that is currently available, there was uncertainty about the usefulness of topical antibiotics in enhancing the resolution of ear discharge in patients with chronic suppurative otitis media. However, despite this uncertainty, there are some data to show that using topical antibiotics in comparison to a placebo o

Unilesional plantar mycosis fungoides treated with topical photodynamic therapy - case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Unilesional mycosis fungoides (UMF) and pagetoid reticulosis (PR) are variants of mycosis fungoides. Conventional therapy comprises surgical excision or radiotherapy, which may be associated with long-term side effects, especially when the lesion is located at a special site like the palms and soles. Therefore, alternative treatment options are needed to treat solitary lesions in the case of UMF or PR. Recently, topical photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been described to be an efficient and non-invasive therapeutical option with excellent clinical outcome. OBJECTIVE: The objective of

Commonly used topical oral wound dressing materials in dental and surgical practice--a literature review.

A small number of medicaments are used in oral and maxillofacial surgery to dress wounds, relieve pain, prevent infection and promote healing. While these materials are routinely used, their constituents, uses and effects on oral tissues are rarely discussed. This literature review provides an overview of the constituents, uses and effects of the common materials--oxidised regenerated cellulose, Whitehead's varnish, Carnoy's solution, bismuth iodoform paraffin paste (BIPP), zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE) and Alvogyl.

Granuloma gluteale adultorum associated with use of topical benzocaine preparations: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Granuloma gluteale infantum is a skin disorder of controversial etiology manifested clinically by oval reddish-purple granulomatous nodules on the gluteal surfaces and groin areas of infants. Similar granulomas are noted in adults and the elderly and are referred to as granuloma gluteale adultorum and diaper area granuloma of the aged, respectively. Occlusion from diapers, paper napkins, plastic pants, detergents, starch, powder, halogenated steroids, candidal infection, and urine and feces are postulated as possible etiologies. OBJECTIVE: We report a case of a 40-year-old woman p

Systemic Epinephrine Toxicity Following Topical Anesthetic Gel on Mucosal Surfaces: A Case Report and Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Systemic toxicity from topical epinephrine is rare because dermal and mucosal absorption is typically limited. However, application to highly vascular mucosa, particularly under occlusion, may result in clinically significant systemic absorption. CASE PRESENTATION: A 42-year-old woman developed severe headache, palpitations, tremor, and marked hypertension shortly after a compounded 2.5% lidocaine with epinephrine (1:2000; 0.5 mg/mL) gel was applied to the labial mucosa under occlusion during a cosmetic procedure. An estimated 0.5 to 1.5 mg of epinephrine was applied. Symptoms b

Oral propranolol and topical timolol in the treatment of post-burn pyogenic granuloma: Two cases and a review of the literature.

Two cases of pyogenic granulomas in burned skin were presented, a 17-month-old boy and a 7-year-old girl, being given oral propranolol and topical timolol. Both cases showed lesions improvement with no adverse effects, suggesting that beta-blocker therapy may have a positive impact on the treatment of pyogenic granuloma after burns.

Acantholytic pityriasis rubra pilaris associated with topical use of imiquimod 5%: case report and literature review.

Topical use of immune response modifiers, such as imiquimod, has increased in dermatology. Although its topical use is well tolerated, it may be associated with exacerbations of generalized cutaneous inflammatory diseases, possibly through the systemic circulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines. This report describes a case of development of pityriasis rubra pilaris, a rare erythematous-papulosquamous dermatosis, in a woman aged 60 years during treatment with imiquimod 5% cream for actinic keratosis. It evolved with erythrodermic conditions and palmoplantar keratoderma, presenting progressive c

Topical Use of Mammalian Target of Rapamycin (mTOR) Inhibitors in Tuberous Sclerosis Complex-A Comprehensive Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis complex is a genetically determined multisystem disorder that may affect almost any human organ. The discovery of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway and its involvement in tuberous sclerosis complex-related pathology has led to the introduction of mTOR inhibitors into clinical practice. Topical administration of mTOR inhibitors for skin lesions related to tuberous sclerosis complex may represent a reasonable alternative for more invasive procedures. A growing number of patients have been described exhibiting positive therapeutic effects from the top

Melanoma of the glans penis successfully treated with topical imiquimod: dermoscopy usefulness in clinical monitoring and review of the literature.

Melanoma in situ (MIS) of the penis is very rare in dermatologic literature. The standard of care for MIS is surgical removal by excision with a 5-mm margins or Mohs micrographic surgery. Nevertheless, surgery is occasionally not feasible for a number of reasons, such as patient comorbidities, potential aesthetic and functional impairment and patient preference. Recently, topical treatment with an immunomodulator, imiquimod, has been proposed as an alternative treatment for MIS. Dermoscopy, beyond its well established usefulness in the diagnostic evaluation of melanocytic lesions, has also sho
