The discovery of stromatolites developing at 3570 m above sea level in a high-altitude volcanic lake Socompa, Argentinean Andes.

We describe stromatolites forming at an altitude of 3570 m at the shore of a volcanic lake Socompa, Argentinean Andes. The water at the site of stromatolites formation is alkaline, hypersaline, rich in inorganic nutrients, very rich in arsenic, and warm (20-24°C) due to a hydrothermal input. The stromatolites do not lithify, but form broad, rounded and low-domed bioherms dominated by diatom frustules and aragonite micro-crystals agglutinated by extracellular substances. In comparison to other modern stromatolites, they harbour an atypical microbial community characterized by highly abundant re

Pseudooceanicola onchidii sp. nov., isolated from a marine invertebrate from the South China Sea.

A novel bacterial strain, XY-99T, was isolated from the epidermis of a marine invertebrate of the genus Onchidium from seawater of the South China Sea. The cells of the strain were aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, and oval-shaped (0.8-1.0 µm wide and 1.0-1.5 µm long) without a flagellum. The strain grew at temperatures of 15-37 °C (optimum, 35-37 °C), at pH 5.5-9.5 (optimum 7.5), and at NaCl concentrations of 0-12.0 % (w/v) (optimum 1.5-3.0 %). The major fatty acids (>10 %) were summed feature 8 (comprising C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c), C16 : 0 and 11-methyl C18 : 1ω7c. The predomina

High-Seas Marine Microorganism Delivers an Extract That Dampens LPS-Driven Pro-Inflammatory Signaling: Galbibacter orientalis Strain ROD011.

An ethyl acetate extract from the deep-sea bacterium Galbibacter orientalis strain ROD011 (GOEE), collected from international waters, was investigated as a potential anti-inflammatory agent. In lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated murine macrophages, nitric oxide (NO) production fell by 72-87% at 5-20 µg/mL GOEE without detectable cytotoxicity. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2 protein abundance decreased in a dose-dependent manner and was nearly absent at 20 µg/mL. In zebrafish embryos, survival was maintained up to 40 µg/mL, and LPS-induced signals were attenuated; the cell-death rate declined from 10

Efficient bioaccumulation of tungsten by Escherichia coli cells expressing the Sulfitobacter dubius TupBCA system.

Tungsten (W) is a valuable element with considerable industrial and economic importance that belongs to the European Union list of critical metals with a high supply risk. Therefore, the development of effective and new methods for W recovery is essential to ensure a sustainable supply. In the present study, the Sulfitobacter dubius W transport system TupABC was explored in order to demonstrate both its functionality in Escherichia coli cells and to construct a bioaccumulator (EcotupW). The complete gene cluster tupBCA or partial gene cluster tupBC were cloned in an expression vector and trans

Native bacteria mitigate diuron and copper toxicity to microalgae isolated from a chronically contaminated coastal lagoon.

In natural environments, microalgae are invariably associated with bacteria, yet the role of these microbial consortia in modulating microalgal physiological responses to chemical stress remains largely unexplored. This study investigates whether native bacterial communities enhance the tolerance of field-isolated microalgae to toxic compounds. Microalgae-bacteria consortia were isolated from the Mediterranean coastal Or Lagoon (South of France), chronically impacted by herbicides and trace metals. The chlorophyte Chlamydomonas sp. Or2023a and the diatom Entomoneis sp. Or2023b were isolated an

Analysis of the microbiota of pregnant women in relation to weight gain during pregnancy - a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Excessive body weight was associated with changes in individual microbiota. However, limited research on the impact of excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) revealed that microbiota patterns related to GWG differed from those linked to pregestational overweight or obesity. AIM: The aim was to compare differences in the microbiota of women in the third trimester of gestation who had excessive and non-excessive weight gain during pregnancy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Women with a singleton gestation at 34 + 0 weeks and normal pregestational body mass index were recruited to the stud

Sequence-Based Characterization of Microalgal Microbiomes: Impact of DNA Extraction Protocol on Yield and Community Composition.

The bacterial communities associated with microalgae are vital for the growth and health of the host, and engineering algal microbiomes can enhance the fitness of the algae. Characterization of these microbiomes mostly relies on sequencing of DNA, which can be extracted with an array of protocols that potentially impact DNA quantity and quality and thus potentially affect subsequent analyses of microbiome composition. Here, we extracted DNA from Isochrysis galbana, Tetraselmis suecica, and Conticribra weissflogii microbiomes using four different protocols. DNA yield and quality was greatly imp

Biofilm formation and antibiotic production in Ruegeria mobilis are influenced by intracellular concentrations of cyclic dimeric guanosinmonophosphate.

In many species of the marine Roseobacter clade, periods of attached life, in association with phytoplankton or particles, are interspersed with planktonic phases. The purpose of this study was to determine whether shifts between motile and sessile life in the globally abundant Roseobacter clade species Ruegeria mobilis are associated with intracellular concentrations of the signal compound cyclic dimeric guanosinmonophosphate (c-di-GMP), which in bacteria regulates transitions between motile and sessile life stages. Genes for diguanylate cyclases and phosphodiesterases, which are involved in

Efficient NADPH-dependent dehalogenation afforded by a self-sufficient reductive dehalogenase.

Reductive dehalogenases are corrinoid and iron-sulfur cluster-containing enzymes that catalyze the reductive removal of a halogen atom. The oxygen-sensitive and membrane-associated nature of the respiratory reductive dehalogenases has hindered their detailed kinetic study. In contrast, the evolutionarily related catabolic reductive dehalogenases are oxygen tolerant, with those that are naturally fused to a reductase domain with similarity to phthalate dioxygenase presenting attractive targets for further study. We present efficient heterologous expression of a self-sufficient catabolic reducti

Hexavalent chromium reduction by Pannonibacter phragmitetus BB isolated from soil under chromium-containing slag heap.

The objective of this study was to find an indigenous Cr(VI)-reducing bacterium that can effectively be used for Cr(VI) remediation in the contaminated soils. The results showed that one isolate from soil under a chromium-containing slag heap at a steel-alloy factory in China had a strong ability of reducing Cr(VI). It can completely reduce 500 mg L(-1) Cr (VI) within 24 h. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence and similarity analysis, this isolate was identified as Pannonibacter phragmitetus and assigned as strain BB. Images of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated that the cell surface of P

Scale Drop Disease Virus (SDDV) infection induces intestinal dysbiosis and secondary Vibrio expansion in Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer).

Scale drop disease virus (SDDV) is a major viral pathogen causing high mortality in farmed Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer), yet its impacts on host-associated microbiota remain poorly understood. In this study, juvenile L. calcarifer were intraperitoneally challenged with 107 viral copies (0.1 ml SDDV), resulting in 94.2% cumulative mortality over a 24-day experimental period. A total of 36 intestinal content samples were collected at defined time points relative to challenge (dpc) from clinically healthy (H) and sick (S) fish, representing five stages: pre-infection baseline (H0 dpc), early

Metagenomic insights into mechanisms of coral larval settlement induction and inhibition by marine biofilms.

BACKGROUND: Biofilms are essential to larval settlement in many marine invertebrates, yet the mechanisms driving settlement induction or inhibition in corals remain poorly resolved. This challenge lies in the vast taxonomic and functional diversity of marine biofilms, making it difficult to identify cues associated with settlement. To address this, we analysed the metagenomes of biofilms used to induce settlement (attachment and metamorphosis) of four broadcast-spawning non-acroporid coral species: Dipsastrea favus, Platygyra sinensis, Echinophyllia aspera and Porites lobata. Biofilms were dev

Dissolved organic phosphorus utilization and composition under different water regimes of a river-dominated estuary.

Dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) has been closely linked to microbial alkaline phosphatases (AP) whose affiliation and diversity is largely unknown in coastal waters. Here we assessed genetic diversity and abundance of bacterial alkaline phosphatases phoD and phosphate transporter phoD and explored how AP activity interacting with them along the salinity gradient of Pearl River Estuary (PRE), which was under heavy anthropogenic pressures. Partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) revealed the pathway from environmental variables (pH and salinity) to phoD-harboring bacterial taxa in partic

Parrotfish predation drives distinct microbial communities in reef-building corals.

BACKGROUND: Coral-associated microbial communities are sensitive to multiple environmental and biotic stressors that can lead to dysbiosis and mortality. Although the processes contributing to these microbial shifts remain inadequately understood, a number of potential mechanisms have been identified. For example, predation by various corallivore species, including ecologically-important taxa such as parrotfishes, may disrupt coral microbiomes via bite-induced transmission and/or enrichment of potentially opportunistic bacteria. Here, we used a combination of mesocosm experiments and field-bas

Causal association of the skin microbiome with human infertility: insights from a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization.

Infertility is a disorder characterized by the inability to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 months of regular and unprotected sexual activity. Affecting 8-12% of the global population, with the continuous progress of microbial research in recent years, a variety of microorganisms may be associated with the onset of infertility. We therefore used a two-sample MR Analysis to investigate the association between skin microbes and infertility. we used preprocessed exposure data to correlate infertility measures (infertility in women, associated with anovulation; Female infertility, cervical i

Oil spill surface washing agents and chemical herders drive microbial community structure impacting biodegradation.

UNLABELLED: Spill treating agents (STAs) may be authorized for use during an oil spill response; however, the impact of certain classes of agents on oil biodegradation is poorly understood. Microcosms comprising an oil-degrading microbial consortium were amended with weathered crude oil and treated with two STAs: a surface washing agent or chemical herder, alongside single-agent treatments. The microbial community readily degraded the STAs, evidenced by microbial growth and respiration. Carbon dioxide production was higher than expected in treatments containing oil and STA together, suggesting
