General Morphology and Neurite Projection Patterns of Supramedullary Neurons in the Cunner, Tautogolabrus adspersus.

Supramedullary neurons (SMNs) are located on the dorsal surface of the hindbrain and spinal cord in many adults of teleost fishes. Comparative morphological studies have revealed differences in SMN size, number and distribution among fishes. However, little information exists on the projection patterns of SMN neurites within the central nervous system. We focus on a single species of adult teleost fish, the cunner, Tautogolabrus adspersus, a fish that has 25-46 SMN somata aligned dorsally along the midline in the hindbrain and rostral third of the spinal cord. Light and transmission electron m

Disentangling a Functional Speech Disorder in the Context of another Neurological Disease: A Case Report.

This clinical case describes the communication profile of a functional speech disorder. A 48-year-old woman was admitted to the emergency service due to sudden changes in speech, generalized dystonia and gait ataxia. Magnetic resonance imaging showed multiple supra and infratentorial inflammatory lesions involving the posterior occipito-temporal lobes bilaterally, frontal convexity bilaterally, insula and paramedian frontal cortex on the left, diencephalon, rhombencephalon. On the third day, a speech pathology evaluation was conducted, revealing inconsistencies in speech: repetitions of initia…

The Arnold-Chiari type II malformation at midgestation.

The Arnold-Chiari malformation type II (ACMII) is reported to be reversible after closure of a myelomeningocele at midgestation. To elucidat … the cerebellum and brain stem. Some early developmental anomalies already present in the primitive rhombencephalon due to early embryonic hindbrain herniation as well as some intra-axial anomalies are probably not reversible.

Molecular determinants of neural crest migration.

Normal septation of the cardiac outflow tract requires migration of neural crest cells from the posterior rhombencephalon to the branchial arches and developing conotruncal endocardial cushions. Proper migration of these cells is mediated by a variety of molecular cues. Adhesion molecules, such as integrins, are involved in the interaction of neural crest cells with the extracellular matrix, while cadherins allow neural crest cells to interact with each other during their migration. Pax3 appears to be important for proliferation of neural crest precursors, and connexin-43-mediated gap junction…

Hindbrain Adrenergic/Noradrenergic Control of Integrated Endocrine and Autonomic Stress Responses.

Hindbrain adrenergic/noradrenergic nuclei facilitate endocrine and autonomic responses to physical and psychological challenges. Neurons that synthesize adrenaline and noradrenaline target hypothalamic structures to modulate endocrine responses while descending spinal projections regulate sympathetic function. Furthermore, these neurons respond to diverse stress-related metabolic, autonomic, and psychosocial challenges. Accordingly, adrenergic and noradrenergic nuclei are integrative hubs that promote physiological adaptation to maintain homeostasis. However, the precise mechanisms through whi

Rhombencephalosynapsis: Fused cerebellum, confused geneticists.

Rhombencephalosynapsis (RES) is a unique cerebellar malformation characterized by fusion of the cerebellar hemispheres with partial or complete absence of a recognizable cerebellar vermis. Subsets of patients also have other brain malformations such as midbrain fusion with aqueductal stenosis, characteristic craniofacial features (prominent forehead, flat midface, hypertelorism, ear abnormalities), and somatic malformations (heart, kidney, spine, and limb defects). Similar to known genetic brain malformations, the RES cerebellar malformation is highly stereotyped, yet no genetic causes have be

Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Malformations of Midbrain-Hindbrain.

We aim to review the magnetic resonance imaging appearance of malformations of midbrain and hindbrain. These can be classified as predominantly cerebellar malformations, combined cerebellar and brain stem malformations, and predominantly brain stem malformations. The diagnostic criteria for the majority of these morphological malformations are based on neuroimaging findings. The predominantly cerebellar malformations include predominantly vermian hypoplasia seen in Dandy-Walker malformation and rhombencephalosynapsis, global cerebellar hypoplasia reported in lissencephaly and microlissencephal

[Rhombencephalitis caused by Listeria monocytogenes].

The observation of an abscess in the brain stem and cerebellum due to Listeria monocytogenes is presented. The patient was a 55 year old diabetic, alcoholic, gastrectomized male in whom a febrile and meningeal syndrome developed. Three days later he had a progressive unilateral dysfunction of the cranial nerves. The cerebrospinal fluid showed pleocytosis of the polymorphonuclear cells, an increase in proteins and low glucose in relation with the glycemia. No parenchymatous lesion was observed upon emergency computerized tomography. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a hyper-signal lesion in the

Neuropsychiatric Symptoms in Rhombencephalosynapsis: A Clinical Report.

Rhombencephalosynapsis (RES) is a hindbrain malformation characterized by a missing cerebellar vermis with apposition or fusion of the cerebellar hemispheres. The present clinical case report provides a comprehensive, longitudinal overview of cognitive and affective manifestations in a 22-year-old patient with RES. The patient shows clinical signs of emotional reactivity and dysregulation, impulsivity, and impairments in executive functioning since early childhood. These features fit the constellation of neuropsychiatric symptoms observed in patients with congenital and acquired abnormalities

A brainstem integrator for self-location memory and positional homeostasis in zebrafish.

To track and control self-location, animals integrate their movements through space. Representations of self-location are observed in the mammalian hippocampal formation, but it is unknown if positional representations exist in more ancient brain regions, how they arise from integrated self-motion, and by what pathways they control locomotion. Here, in a head-fixed, fictive-swimming, virtual-reality preparation, we exposed larval zebrafish to a variety of involuntary displacements. They tracked these displacements and, many seconds later, moved toward their earlier location through corrective

The newer classifications of the chiari malformations with clarifications: An anatomical review.

In 1891, Hans Chiari described a group of congenital hindbrain anomalies, which were eventually named after him. He classified these malformations into three types (Chiari malformations I, II, and III), and four years later added the Chiari IV malformation. However, numerous reports across the literature do not seem to fit Chiari's original descriptions of these malformations, so researchers have been encouraged to propose new classifications to encompass these variants (e.g., Chiari 0, Chiari1.5, and Chiari 3.5 malformations). Moreover, there is a continued misunderstanding and misuse of the

Population densities predict forebrain size variation in the cleaner fish Labroides dimidiatus.

The 'social brain hypothesis' proposes a causal link between social complexity and either brain size or the size of key brain parts known to … n and telencephalon (that together form the forebrain). In contrast, the size of the mesencephalon, rhombencephalon, and brain stem, assumed more basal in function, were independent of local fish densities. Selective enlargement of brain parts, that is mosaic brain adjustment, appears to be driven by population density in cleaner fish.

Body temperature regulation in the newborn infant: interaction with sleep and clinical implications.

Thermoregulation in newborn infant differs from that of adult. Comparisons between sleep stages show that, during rapid eye movements (REM) … luence of diencephalic structures is never depressed in REM sleep or the functional autonomy of the rhombencephalon is still relevant in the immature encephalon of the newborn. The thermoregulatory model also allows understanding of inter-individual differences in thermoregulation and levels of thermoneutrality. An attempt has also been made to learn the role of …

Pathogenesis of retinoid-induced hindbrain malformations in an experimental model.

Among the findings associated with the human Retinoic Acid Embryopathy are hindbrain defects including the Arnold-Chiari malformation. The h … lformations, including hindbrain herniation, result from primary damage to the neural crest and the rhombencephalon. The vulnerability of these sites appears to be correlated with the presence of normal physiological cell death. While these experimental animals differ in many respects from the typical human Arnold-Chiari malformation, they may provide some insigh …

Rhombencephalitis due to Listeria monocytogenes: A Clinicopathologic Study of a Case.

INTRODUCTION: Central nervous system infections caused by Listeria monocytogenes usually manifest in the form of meningitis or meningoencephalitis, and are more common among immunosuppressed patients. Brainstem encephalitis (rhombencephalitis) is less common and fatal if not recognized and treated early. CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a 40-year-old, immunocompetent male patient, who presented with initial symptoms of high fever and productive cough. Signs of brainstem involvement appeared later. A magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed a lesion of inflammatory appearance in th
