Rattus norvegicus (Rodentia: Muridae) Infected by Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum (syn. Le. chagasi) in Brazil.

In the present study we surveyed the fauna of phlebotomine sand flies and small mammals in peridomestic areas from a Brazilian municipality where the American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) is endemic. A total of 608 female phlebotomine sand flies were captured during nine months in 2009 and 2010. Seven different species were represented with 60% of them being Lutzomyia intermedia and Lu. whitmani, both incriminated vectors of ACL. Lu. longipalpis, a proven vector of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) was also captured at high proportion (12.8%). Genomic DNA analysis of 136 species-specific pools of f

Sexual dimorphism and seasonal variation in submandibular gland histology of Bolomys lasiurus (Rodentia, Muridae).

Wild rodents (Bolomys lasiurus) of both sexes were caught in a cerrado grassland area during the dry (July-September) and rainy (January-March) seasons of Brazil. Fasted animals were perfused with Karnovsky fixative through the left ventricle, under ether anesthesia, and the submandibular gland was processed for embedding in historesin. Histological and histometric data show sexual dimorphism at both seasons. In the volume percentage of the granular convoluted tubules (GCT) and their secretory granules, the males exhibited higher values. The absolute volume occupied by these structures, howeve

Eimeria telekii n.sp. (Apicomplexa: Coccidia) from Lemniscomys striatus (Rodentia: Muridae): morphology, pathology and phylogeny.

Using a combination of morphological, life-cycle and molecular data, we describe a new apicomplexan parasite Eimeria telekii n.sp. from a striped grass mouse Lemniscomys striatus captured in Kenya. Oocysts are oval to spherical or ellipsoidal, 20.4 x 15.7 (15.5-25.0 x 12.0-20.0) microm with a colourless, smooth and bilayered wall. Sporocysts are ellipsoidal, 11.2 x 7.8 (10.0-12.0 x 7.0-9.0) microm with a small Stieda body and granular sporocyst residuum and contain 2 elongated, banana-shaped sporozoites with a single refractile body. Life-cycle, pathogenicity and host specificity of this paras

Biochemical genetic markers to identify two morphologically similar South African Mastomys species (Rodentia: Muridae).

The two common southern African mice species (Mastomys coucha and M. natalensis) are morphologically almost identical, making field identification impossible at present. Specimens from two localities were collected and tissue and blood samples taken. The habitat type of each locality was studied, and a distribution map compiled. A definite correlation between biome-type and species range was found to be present. Three isozyme markers were identified: glucose phosphate isomerase in liver, and two general (non-specific) protein coding loci in muscle. In addition, we also identified species chara

[Chromosome variation and anomalous karyotypes in the red-backed mouse Clethrionomys rufocanus (Rodentia, Microtinae)].

G-banding and C-banding of chromosomes were studied in populations of the red-backed mouse Clethrionomys rufocanus from 11 localities of eastern Russia. Intrapopulation polymorphism of autosome 3 caused by the deletion-duplication of the short-arm heterochromatin (2n = 56; NFa = 56-58) was demonstrated. The karyotype of Cl. rufocanus from continental populations and Sakhalin Island was shown to have a large subtelocentric chromosome of pair 3 (NFa = 58), whereas in the population from Kunashir Island, chromosomes of this pair were acrocentric (NFa = 56). One animal from the population of the K

Incipient morphological specializations associated with fossorial life in the skull of ground squirrels (Sciuridae, Rodentia).

Anatomical and biological specializations have been studied extensively in fossorial rodents, especially in subterranean species, such as mole-rats or pocket-gophers. Sciurids (i.e., squirrels) are mostly known for their diverse locomotory behaviors, and encompass many arboreal species. They also include less specialized fossorial species, such as ground squirrels that are mainly scratch diggers. The skull of ground squirrels remains poorly investigated in a fossorial context, while it may reflect incipient morphological specializations associated with fossorial life, especially due to the put

Evolutionary and biological implications of dental mesial drift in rodents: the case of the Ctenodactylidae (Rodentia, Mammalia).

Dental characters are importantly used for reconstructing the evolutionary history of mammals, because teeth represent the most abundant material available for the fossil species. However, the characteristics of dental renewal are presently poorly used, probably because dental formulae are frequently not properly established, whereas they could be of high interest for evolutionary and developmental issues. One of the oldest rodent families, the Ctenodactylidae, is intriguing in having longstanding disputed dental formulae. Here, we investigated 70 skulls among all extant ctenodactylid genera (

To the knowledge of the common hamster (Cricetus cricetus Linné, 1758; Rodentia) as host of leptospirosis in Czechoslovakia.

A total of 1288 hamsters (Cricetus cricetus), coming from two regions of Czechoslovakia, were serologically investigated on the presence of leptospirosis. In 1114 hamsters from eastern Slovakia, where an outbreak occurred and local populations lived quite atypically, there was 31.8% positivity, in 174 animals from central Moravia, where the populations were at higher levels but lived normally, the positivity amounted to 17.2%. The serological positivity increases proportionately to the weight, i.e. to the age of the animals. The serovar grippotyphosa was dominant in them (29.6% of examined ham

Contrasting geographic patterns of parasite and hantavirus diversity in the rodent Oligoryzomys longicaudatus (Rodentia, Cricetidae).

Host-parasite interactions arise from a complex interplay of evolutionary history, ecological context, and community structure, yet these dimensions are rarely examined together. Here, we introduce a unified framework that links the macroevolutionary processes shaping host-parasite associations with the microevolutionary dynamics driving intraspecific viral and host diversity. This approach reveals how evolutionary and ecological forces jointly structure parasite and viral diversity across a host's range. We used the hantavirus host Oligoryzomys longicaudatus in South America as a model system

The origin of an unusual sex chromosome constitution in Acomys sp. (Rodentia, Muridae) from Tanzania.

This paper describes a case which presents an evident variation from the "standard" XX/XY sex chromosomal constitution in a rodent, Acomys sp. This species known to be found in three localities of East Africa has only recently been separated from A. spinosissimus, its closest relative. In our study, five specimens of Acomys sp. and eight specimens of A. spinosissimus were live-trapped in five localities. Comparisons between the two taxa assed by G-banding show a complete homology in the chromosomal shape and banding pattern for 29 pairs of chromosomes corresponding to the complete autosomal se

Helminth community of Thrichomys laurentius (Rodentia: Echimyidae) between two contrasting phytogeographic subunits of the Caatinga.

The structuring of parasite communities in small mammals depends on both host-intrinsic factors and environmental conditions. We investigated the helminth fauna of the caviomorph rodent Thrichomys laurentius, comparing populations from two contrasting phytophysiognomies in the Caatinga biome: open shrubland in Carrasco area and seasonal deciduous forest in Mata Seca area. In this context, the influence of biotic predictors (host sex and host body weight) and abiotic predictors (phytogeographic subunit: Carrasco or Mata Seca) on parasite diversity (species richness, Shannon, and Simpson indices

Spontaneous embryonic death in plains viscacha (Lagostomus maximus - Rodentia), a species with unique reproductive characteristics.

Spontaneous embryonic death is a conserved reproductive event in Eutherians. The macro and microscopic characteristics of this type of death are similar between the different taxa. However, in the hystricomorphic rodent plains viscacha (Lagostomus maximus) is exceptional in terms of massiveness (80% embryonic resorption). In this species, of the 10-12 implantation sites (IS) (half in each uterine horn), only the caudal embryos will survive, resorbing the cranial and intermediate IS. We hypothesize that uterine structural variations in L. maximus restrict growth and promote embryo death, with t

Gliridae and Eomyidae (Rodentia) of the Miocene Tagay fauna (Olkhon Island, Lake Baikal, Eastern Siberia).

BACKGROUND: In current management of type 2 diabetes (T2DM), cardiovascular and renal prevention have become important targets to be achieved. In this context, a joint panel of four endocrinology societies from Brazil and Portugal was established to develop an evidence-based guideline for treatment of hyperglycemia in T2DM. METHODS: MEDLINE (via PubMed) was searched for randomized clinical trials, meta-analyses, and observational studies related to diabetes treatment. When there was insufficient high-quality evidence, expert opinion was sought. Updated positions on treatment of T2DM patients

Occurrence of Giardia duodenalis assemblages in farmed long-tailed chinchillas Chinchilla lanigera (Rodentia) from Romania.

BACKGROUND: Giardia duodenalis is a parasitic protist that infects a large number of species, being localized in the small intestine. Two of the eight recognized assemblages have zoonotic potential, but studies regarding their distribution in less important pet or farm species are scarce. Of these species, the long-tailed chinchilla is a host for Giardia spp., although data on the spread of infection and assemblages involved are confined. The present work aimed to determine the prevalence of Giardia infection and assemblage identification in farmed chinchillas in Romania. A total of 341 fecal
