An experimental investigation of the role of appraisal processes in adolescents and their mothers experiencing family conflict.

A social information processing perspective was used to investigate appraisal processes in family conflict situations. Fifty-five young adolescents (32 males and 23 females) and their mothers who were experiencing sufficient conflict to seek mediation assistance, were presented with hypothetical scenarios depicting common sources of conflict. Participants were randomly assigned to two time conditions. After reading each scenario, participants chose one of four interpretations (two hostile and two non-hostile). Time condition did not influence the number of hostile interpretations for mothers,

Distinct processing stages of cross-modal conflict in schizophrenia: The role of auditory cortex underactivation.

BACKGROUND: The cross-modal conflict deficit is a key feature of schizophrenia. However, it remains largely unknown whether cross-modal conflict in schizophrenia diverges at distinct processing stages and its potential association with the auditory cortex. METHODS: In Experiment 1, we divided cross-modal conflict into semantic and response stages, and we investigated the cross-modal conflict between schizophrenia patients (n = 30) and health individuals (n = 32). In Experiment 2, we utilized tDCS (transcranial direct current stimulation) to inhibit the activity of the auditory cortex in healt

Emotion Regulation Difficulties and Relationship Satisfaction in Adolescent Couples: The Role of Conflict Resolution Strategies.

Emotion regulation difficulties have been found to predict relationship satisfaction in adult samples, yet little is known with regards to the processes explaining these associations in adolescent dating relationships. Furthermore, among the available literature, most studies only consider one romantic partner. To address this gap, this study used a dyadic approach and considered the role of conflict resolution strategies (i.e., positive problem-solving, withdrawal, and conflict engagement) in the association between adolescents' emotion regulation and romantic relationship satisfaction. A sam

Intention to Stay in Specialist Trauma Nurses: Relationship With Role Conflict, Stress, and Organizational Support.

BACKGROUND: Specialist trauma nurses contribute to shortening hospital stay, lowering intensive care unit readmission rates, and improving treatment outcomes through early detection and management of health problems in trauma patients. However, Korean specialist trauma nurses have a higher turnover rate than other nurses due to negative factors like unclear job descriptions and inconsistent job activities. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the levels of and relationships among role conflict, occupational stress, perceived organizational support, and intent to stay in Korean specialist tr…

Proactive control without midfrontal control signals? The role of midfrontal oscillations in preparatory conflict adjustments.

Successful motor control during behavioral conflicts relies on neural adjustments that can occur reactively (i.e., after conflict occurrence) and proactively (i.e., in preparation prior to conflicts). While midfrontal delta/theta oscillations are known to play a role for reactive control, their relevance for proactive control is unclear. Using EEG, we investigated the role of midfrontal oscillations during conflict preparation in a motor conflict task, where a predictive cue either indicated no or an increased likelihood for an action conflict. During conflict preparation, increased conflict l

Parental Depressive Symptoms and Youth Internalizing and Externalizing Problems: The Moderating Role of Interparental Conflict.

The current investigation examined if interparental conflict (IPC), including psychological and physical violence, moderated the relationship between parental depressive symptoms and youth internalizing and externalizing problems, respectively, in a sample of youth with a parent with a history of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). One hundred and eighty families with a parent with a history of MDD (Mage = 41.96; 88.9% mothers) and a youth in the target age range of 9-to-15 years (49.4% females; Mage = 11.46) participated. Findings indicated that IPC exacerbated the effect of parental depressive

Psychosocial hazards and work-life balance: the role of workplace conflict, rivalry, and harassment in Latvia.

BACKGROUND: Even though the link between the psychosocial work environment and work-life balance (WLB) has been thoroughly researched, there is limited evidence evaluating the impact of workplace violence, sexual harassment, conflicts, and rivalry on WLB. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 2,471 respondents in Latvia from December 20, 2021, to July 14, 2022. WLB was measured through a survey question assessing the frequency of work-life imbalance, with responses categorized into dichotomous variables. The study evaluated the association between the selected workplace psychos

The self in conflict: the role of executive processes during truthful and deceptive responses about attitudes.

This study sought to extend previous results regarding deceptions about specific memories by investigating the role of executive processes in deceptions about evaluative judgments. In addition, given that previous studies of deception have not included valence manipulations, we also wanted to determine whether the goodness/badness aspect of the items would affect the processes used during deception. Thus, we compared behavioral and event-related potential (ERP) activity while participants made truthful and directed lie (i.e., press opposite of the truth) responses about attitude items with whi

Interparental conflict and child adjustment: testing the mediational role of appraisals in the cognitive-contextual framework.

Children's appraisals of interparental conflict consistently have been associated with adjustment problems, but the processes that give rise to this association are not well understood. This paper proposes that appraisals of threat and self-blame mediate the association between children's reports of interparental conflict and internalizing problems, and tests this mediational hypothesis in two samples of children, one drawn from the community (317 ten- to fourteen-year-olds) and the other from battered women's shelters (145 ten- to twelve-year-olds). Results indicate that perceived threat medi

Work-Family Behavioral Role Conflict and Turnover Intention Among Clinical Nurses: Multiple Mediating Effects of Role Overload, Presenteeism, and Psychological Capital.

BACKGROUND: Work-family behavioral role conflict (WFBRC) is an important stressor in the nursing work environment and may be associated with turnover intention. However, the roles of role overload, presenteeism, and (PsyCap) in this relationship have rarely been examined simultaneously among Chinese clinical nurses. AIMS: Guided by the Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, this study aimed to examine the relationship between WFBRC and turnover intention among Chinese clinical nurses, as well as the mediating and moderating roles of role overload, presenteeism, and PsyCap. METHODS: This was…

Work-Family Conflict and the Use of Psychological Control With Children and Colleagues: The Role of Needs Fulfillment.

Grounded in Self-Determination Theory, this study examines the potential mediating role of needs fulfillment between the work-family conflict (WFC-FWC) and the use of psychological control with children and collegues. Self-determination theory views psychological control as dysfunctional interpersonal behaviour determined by stressors and thus associated with a frustration of needs. A sample of 380 Italian dual-earner couples fill-in questionnaires through which it was possible to highlight a partial mediating role of the needs fulfillment, suggesting that conflicts between work and family dem

[Pandemics, Politics and Science: the Role of Science and Scientifics for the Solution of the COVID-19 Pandemic Conflicts].

The public health crisis caused by COVID-19 disease has bring again to the public arena the old debate of the role in decision-making process of politics and science. In this paper we analyze, in the context of the current pandemics, how politics has left a stellar role for science, either because science has anticipated in its proposals to politics, or because politics has opted for it as a premeditated strategy. The references to the opinion of scientists as a decision-making criterion or, furthermore, their presence as true spokesmen for authority have been so frequent. This means rediscove

Accumulation or adaptation? A longitudinal study of role conflict and turnover intention among Chinese social workers.

The Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model suggests that job demands and resources influence employees' turnover intention (TI), yet less is known about how these effects unfold over time. Drawing on the competing perspectives of accumulation and adaptation, this study examines whether TI among social workers is shaped by the cumulative effects of past role conflict (RC) or by responses to changing work conditions. Using matched panel data from the 2019 and 2022 waves of the China Social Work Longitudinal Study (CSWLS), the study investigates both lagged and change effects of RC and workplace supp…

How does cognitive control reduce anger and aggression? The role of conflict monitoring and forgiveness processes.

It is well-established that superior cognitive control abilities are associated with lower levels of anger and aggression. However, the precise emotion regulation operations underlying this relationship have been underspecified and underexplored in previous research. Drawing on neuropsychological models of cognitive control, the authors propose that limited capacity resources can be recruited within a hostile situation to promote a process of forgiveness. The results of 2 studies supported this proposal. Across studies, individual differences in hostility-primed cognitive control were assessed
