The Experience of Breastfeeding Women During the Pandemic in Romania.

Background: Evidence suggests that the uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated changes have negatively influenced breastfeeding practices. Considering that breastfeeding women are already known to be more vulnerable in terms of emotional status, the aim of our study was to evaluate the experiences and concerns of breastfeeding women in Romania during the pandemic. Also, we tried to identify the most effective measures for mitigating the negative impacts. Methods: A 46-item questionnaire was developed for data collection and it was shared on Facebook and Instagram, with…

A Modeling Study for Hip Fracture Rates in Romania.

Background and Objectives: As the population ages, the number of hip fractures is expected to increase. Developing prevention policies requires knowledge of the factors that lead to the incidence of hip fractures. In this study, we aimed to quantify how much variation in hip fracture incidence can be explained by osteoporosis treatment and temporal trends in the main risk factors. Methods: We used the HIP-IMPACT method for a national study in Romania. This method has been validated nationally in Norway, based on the validated IMPACT models for coronary heart disease. The model uses numerical d…

Epidemiology of foodborne botulism in Romania 1980-2009.

In 2007, Romania, the largest southeastern European country, reported the highest notification rate of botulism cases in the European Union (0.18 per 100,000 inhabitants), which was 18 times higher than the reported rate in the United States (0.01 per 100,000 inhabitants). This report aims to analyze published and unpublished surveillance data on foodborne botulism in Romania from 1980 to 2009 in the context of political and economical changes that occurred in the former communist countries. The mean annual incidence rate of botulism cases was significantly lower during the late communist peri…

Epidemiology and epizootology of trichinellosis in Romania 1868-2007.

According to the International Commission on Trichinellosis, Romania accounted for the most cases of trichinellosis reported worldwide in 2004. The following report summarizes the evolution of trichinellosis in Romania over a 140-year period (1868-2007). The sylvatic cycle, such as the consumption of meat from wild boar and bear, has been implicated in human cases. However, 95% of human trichinellosis cases originate from specific cultural food practices involving pork consumption. The first report of human and pig trichinellosis in Romania dates back to 1868. After the political changes of 19…

Epidemiology of meningococcal meningitis in Romania 1971-1991.

The paper describes the endemic epidemic picture of meningococcal meningitis in Romania over 1971-1991 period. After the epidemic of 1970 with 1051 cases and a morbidity of 5.2 %000, the incidence of the disease suddenly decreased; thus in 1972-1984 the number of cases ranged from 191 to 534 per year, corresponding to a morbidity rate of 0.9 - 2.3 %000. Starting with the autumn of 1985 the incidence of meningococcal meningitis increased rapidly, reaching a maximum value in 1987 (2623 cases) and a morbidity rate of 11.4 %000. A spectacular decrease to 250-270 cases per year in 1990-1991 and a m…

Reproductive health in Romania: reversing the Ceausescu legacy.

As a result of the restrictive reproductive health policies enforced under the 25-year Ceausescu dictatorship, Romania ended the 1980s with the highest recorded maternal mortality of any country in Europe--159 deaths per 100,000 live births in 1989. An estimated 87 percent of these maternal deaths were caused by illegal and unsafe abortion. Under the Ceausescu regime, all contraceptive methods were forbidden and induced abortion was available only for women who met extremely narrow criteria. Immediately after the December 1989 revolution that overthrew Ceausescu, the new government removed res…

Barrett's Esophagus in Romania: what do we know?

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The incidence of Barrett's Esophagus (BE) is increasing worldwide, thus diagnosis is becoming a major key of interest in preventing esophageal adenocarcinoma. Because the status of BE in Romania is unclear, we performed a narrative review to comprehensively evaluate all published articles on BE from Romania. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature search of PubMed data base and of all Romanian medical journals. The abstracts and the titles of the identified studies were reviewed to exclude the studies that did not answer the search question. In addition we performed…

Kidney transplantation in Romania: two transplant centers experience.

PURPOSE: Kidney graft survival rates improved from decade to decade, but data about factors that affect patient and graft survival remain challenging and even controversial. METHODS: We analyzed retrospectively data from kidney transplanted patients followed in two Romanian transplant centers (Iasi and Bucharest)-new programmes specifically developed after 1989 to cover transplantation requirements for two-thirds of Romania. We used a composite survival outcome defined as 50% reduction in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), return to dialysis or death. Survival analysis was performed…

Late abortion. Attitudes amongst young physicians in Romania.

PURPOSE: The main purpose of this article is to analyze the way in which young physicians analyze and address the issue of therapeutic abortion. METHODS: A multi-institutional survey was conducted using an online questionnaire containing 10 items. RESULTS: Most respondents agreed with therapeutic abortion (1) if the fetus is not yet viable and the mother is put at immediate risk by the continuation of the pregnancy, and (2) when the pregnancy is over 14 weeks and the prenatal screening identifies a very severe malformation. The lowest rate of acceptance was obtained by the option to terminat

Epidemiology of Foodborne Botulism Outbreaks in Romania, 2007-2024.

Foodborne botulism, caused by ingestion of pre-formed botulinum neurotoxin, is the most common form of botulism. While large outbreaks linked to commercial foods are rare, smaller outbreaks associated with home-processed products are more frequent, reflecting local dietary habits and traditional preservation practices. The aim of this paper is to provide a public health overview of reported foodborne botulism outbreaks in Romania over an 18-year period to raise awareness among clinicians and public health officials. Between 2007 and 2024, a total of 337 foodborne botulism cases were reported i…

Streptococcus suis: A Possible Emerging Zoonotic Pathogen in Romania.

Streptococcus suis is a common germ in pig populations, with high carrier rates. Recent studies identify it as an emerging zoonotic pathogen, particularly in Southeast Asia, where raw pork is traditionally consumed. Data on Streptococcus suis infection in Europe, especially Eastern European countries like Romania, are limited. Our study reviewed data from an infectious diseases tertiary hospital in Bucharest between 2001 and 2024, including eight patients diagnosed with a Streptococcus suis invasive infection. The median age was 53.3 years, with a male-to-female ratio 3:1. Three patients had r…

Vector-Borne Infections in Romania: From Surveillance to Prediction.

Vector-borne infections are a growing public health concern in Romania, influenced by ecological diversity, climate change, and socioeconomic factors. West Nile virus, tick-borne encephalitis, and Lyme borreliosis represent the most significant threats, with additional risks posed by emerging pathogens, such as leishmaniasis, and the potential reintroduction of malaria. While surveillance systems exist for human cases and, to a lesser extent, vectors, these remain fragmented, underfunded, and limited in their integration across human, veterinary, and environmental health domains. By highlighti…

Epidemiological Study of Autoimmune Bullous Dermatoses in Northeastern Romania.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune bullous diseases (ABDs) are a rare but significant group of dermatoses that pose great challenges to the treating dermatologist. ABDs are characterized by the presence of tissue-bound and circulating autoantibodies directed against disease-specific target antigens of the skin. Most epidemiological studies have focused on a single ABD. More than that, there are few data about the incidence and prevalence of autoimmune blistering diseases in Romania. METHODS: In this study, between 2015 and 2019, we retrospectively investigated a total of 225 patients with autoimmune bull…
