[Through-and-through cystic lesion: spontaneous healing after needle aspiration and conventional root-canal therapy].

Inflammation-related pathologies such as apical periodontitis or radicular cysts are frequent lesions of the jawbones. Typically, a radiolucency is present that is not always distinguishable from other pathologies. A surgical approach would allow for tissue harvesting with further histopathologic processing. However, in the present case report of a cystic and large tunnelling lesion in the anterior maxilla, a conservative treatment with diagnostic needle aspiration and subsequent root-canal therapy was chosen. The long-term follow-up (eight years) including cone-beam computed tomography demons

Management of Teeth with Persistent Apical Periodontitis after Root Canal Treatment Using Regenerative Endodontic Therapy.

Regenerative endodontic therapy (RET) is currently used to treat immature teeth with necrotic pulp and/or apical periodontitis. However, recently RET has been used to treat mature teeth with necrotic pulp and/or apical periodontitis and resulted in regression of clinical signs and/or symptoms and resolution of apical periodontitis. The purpose of this case report was to describe the potential of using RET to treat 2 mature teeth with persistent apical periodontitis after root canal therapy using RET. Two male patients, one 26-year old and another 12-year old, presented for retreatment of persi…

Complications of Intracanal Irrigation During Root Canal Therapy of a Maxillary Canine Tooth in a Cat.

This case describes a previously unreported complication of maxillary canine root canal therapy in a cat. A 5-year-old Russian Blue cat was presented with a complicated crown fracture (pulp exposure) of its left maxillary canine tooth (204). To salvage the tooth, root canal therapy was initiated but not completed due to hemorrhage within the canal. The procedure was staged. On recovery from the procedure, unilateral facial swelling and corneal ulceration were observed. This was consistent with retrograde passage of sodium hypochlorite through the nasolacrimal duct, inducing chemical injury to …

Photodynamic therapy in the root canal treatment of primary teeth: A systematic review of clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is the most common oral disease worldwide, and it is estimated to affect 2.3 billion people, with at least 530 million of them being schoolchildren with decayed primary teeth. This condition can rapidly evolve into irreversible pulp inflammation and pulp necrosis and thus requiring endodontic intervention. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a supplementary method to conventional pulpectomy and is used to improve the protocol used for disinfection. AIM: The main objective of this study was to evaluate through a systematic review the efficacy of supplementary PDT on the pul

Single-visit versus multiple-visit root canal therapy: Post-endodontic pain outcomes from an umbrella review.

OBJECTIVE: This umbrella review synthesized and critically appraised evidence from systematic reviews comparing post-operative pain after si … ly, and apply more rigorous risk-of-bias methods. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: For adult patients requiring root canal therapy on permanent teeth, current evidence indicates that single-visit and multiple-visit treatment protocols yield broadly similar post-operative pain outcomes. Therefore, the choice of visit strategy can be guided by other factors such as case complexit …

Enhancing Root Canal Therapy with NIR-II Semiconducting Polymer AIEgen and Low-Concentration Sodium Hypochlorite Synergy.

Despite significant efforts to eliminate bacterial biofilm within root canals, achieving effective disinfection remains challenging due to the complex anatomy and limitations of disinfectants. In this study, a second near-infrared (NIR-II) semiconducting polymer with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties, named PIDT-TBT, is deliberately designed and synthesized. This proposes an AIE luminogen-based sterilization strategy in synergy with a low concentration of sodium hypochlorite (NaClO). Water-dispersible PIDT-TBT nanoparticles (NPs) are prepared, demonstrating good biocompatibility, a

Root canal therapy reduces multiple dimensions of pain: a national dental practice-based research network study.

INTRODUCTION: Initial orthograde root canal therapy (RCT) is used to treat dentoalveolar pathosis. The effect RCT has on pain intensity has been frequently reported, but the effect on other dimensions of pain has not. Also, the lack of large prospective studies involving diverse groups of patients and practitioners who are not involved in data collection suggest that there are multiple opportunities for bias to be introduced when these data are systematically aggregated. METHODS: This prospective observational study assessed pain intensity, duration, and its interference with daily activities…

Full pulpotomy versus root canal therapy in mature teeth with irreversible pulpitis: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Vital pulp therapy (VPT) is recommended as an alternative treatment to root canal therapy (RCT) for management of teeth with carious pulp exposure. This randomized clinical trial aimed to compare the outcomes and postoperative pain, and to evaluate the time and cost after full pulpotomy (FP) and RCT in mature molar teeth with irreversible pulpitis (IP). METHODS: A total of 160 mature molar teeth with IP were randomly divided into two treatment groups. The FP group (test group) was treated with FP using iRoot BP Plus by an endodontist, the RCT group (control group) was treated with…

Healing of intrabony defects and its relationship to root canal therapy. A histologic and histometric study in dogs.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the importance of root canal therapy in the healing process of severe intrabony defects. Four beagle dogs were used and 32 interproximal intrabony defects, up to the apical third, were created. Wire ligatures were placed into these defects for plaque accumulation. Three weeks later, the ligatures were removed and 4 different treatment modalities were employed: group 1) scaling and root planing (SRP); group 2) modified Widman flap (MWF); group 3) modified Widman flap and root canal therapy performed at the same time (RCT/MWF); and group 4) modified Widm…

Efficacy and safety of Wuwei Xiaodu Drink in root canal therapy for chronic pulpitis: A retrospective cohort study.

Chronic pulpitis often leads to post-root canal therapy (RCT) complications. Wuwei Xiaodu Drink (WWXDD), a traditional anti-inflammatory formula, may enhance RCT efficacy. The objective was to assess WWXDD combined with RCT for chronic pulpitis, focusing on pain, inflammation, tissue repair, and safety. A retrospective study of 600 patients (300 RCT only vs 300 RCT + 14-day WWXDD) was conducted. Outcomes included pain (Visual Analog Scale), inflammatory markers (C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6, interleukin-8), growth factors (basic fibroblast growth factor, vascu…

Paresthesia and Dysesthesia after Root Canal Therapy of a Mandibular Molar: Diagnosis and Management in a Clinical Case Report.

Inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injury is a rare but serious complication of root canal treatment (RCT), typically caused by mechanical over-instrumentation, chemical irritation from extruded sealers, or thermal damage. We report the case of a 42-year-old woman who developed persistent burning pain, numbness, and dysesthesia of the right lower lip and gingiva after RCT of the right mandibular second molar. Initial management by a general dentist involved retreatment and calcium hydroxide medicament; however, early CBCT was misinterpreted, and referral was delayed. High-quality CBCT and clinical
