Ocular rosacea.

Ocular rosacea was diagnosed in 6.3% of a cornea/external disease referral practice where more than half of the patients referred are for corneal surgery. The most common signs and symptoms are also common to many patients in the general practice of ophthalmology, i.e., foreign body sensation, burning, superficial punctate erosions, chalazia and blepharitis. Less common but dangerous to the vision was corneal thinning, vascularization and infiltrates. Three new associated symptoms were described. These were map dot subepithelial opacities, recurrent erosions and moderately severe foreign body …

Ocular rosacea.

Ocular rosacea was diagnosed in 49 patients. The most common signs and symptoms were foreign body sensation, burning, superficial punctate erosions, chalazia, and belpharitis. Less common but dangerous to the vision was corneal thinning, vascularization, and infiltrates. Three new associated symptoms were found. These were mapdot subepithelial opacities, recurrent erosions, and moderately severe foreign body sensation, pain or burning with minimal associated signs. Of the 49 patients, 37 were treated with 250 mg of oral tetracycline four times a day, which resulted in improvement in almost all…

Ocular rosacea.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To revisit ocular rosacea as an underappreciated condition which can cause permanent blindness if inadequately treated, and to review data supporting improved diagnostic and treatment strategies. RECENT FINDINGS: Ocular rosacea has an underrecognized prevalence in children and individuals with darker skin tone. Rosacea has several associations with other significant systemic diseases. Variations in local and systemic microbiome, including demodex infestation, may play a role in pathogenesis, severity, and in explaining the different phenotypes of rosacea. The National Rosac…

Rosacea Pathogenesis.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder that is not fully understood but involves the complex interplay of genetic factors, immune dysregulation, neurovascular dysregulation, presence of microorganisms, and environmental factors. Increased activation of the immune system occurs through multiple stimuli, including increased levels of cathelicidin and kallikrein 5, Toll-like receptor 2, matrix metalloproteinases, and mast cells within the skin. Their effects are enhanced by the presence of microorganisms and external triggers, such as UV radiation.

Pediatric rosacea.

Because rosacea is uncommon in the pediatric population, care must be taken to exclude other papulopustular disorders. Children can present with vascular, papulopustular, and/or ocular findings. Importantly, ocular symptoms can appear before the cutaneous symptoms of rosacea, leading to misdiagnosis. Rosacea is a clinical diagnosis, but histopathologic examination typically reveals dilated vessels, perivascular lymphohistiocytic infiltrates in the upper dermis, elastosis, and disorganization of the upper dermal connective tissue. Treatment involves avoiding known triggers and utilizing topical…

Rosacea Management.

BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition associated with four distinct subtypes: erythematotelangiectatic, papulopustular, phymatous, and ocular. PURPOSE: To review the different kinds of management for all subtypes. METHODS: We divided rosacea management into three main categories: patient education, skin care, and pharmacological/procedural interventions. RESULTS: Flushing is better prevented rather than treated, by avoiding specific triggers, decreasing transepidermal water loss by moisturizers, and blocking ultraviolet light. Nonselective β-blockers and α2-adrenergic…

Rosacea fulminans.

We review rosacea fulminans, a rare condition that may cause facial scarring and disfigurement. All physicians and health care professionals must be aware of this form of rosacea to treat or refer the patient. Early treatment of rosacea fulminans is essential to avoid scarring.

Pediatric rosacea.

Rosacea is a condition most commonly associated with adults; however, various forms exist in the pediatric population and need to be considered when a child presents with a facial rash. Acne rosacea, steroid rosacea, granulomatous periorificial dermatitis, and other variants of rosacea are presented here and are distinguished from their numerous mimickers. Various topical and systemic therapeutic options exist for the treatment of rosacea with several adjustments and considerations that must be taken into account when treating a child.

[Ocular rosacea].

Five cases of ocular rosacea (one male and four females) are reported in this paper. Two of the patients were with keratoconjunctivitis sicca, one with conjunctivitis chronica and blepharitis, one with conjunctivitis chronica and meibomitis, and one with reccurent corneal erosions with meibomitis and chordeloum. In four patients ocular symptoms preceded the occurence of skin lesions. The treatment with oral tetracyclines significantly improved the state of ocular rosacea in four patients, while in one case the changes of the anterior eye segment progressed in more severe state of ulcerative ke…

Acne rosacea.

Rosacea is a multifactorial skin disorder that usually affects middle-aged persons. Little is known about the etiology of rosacea, although the disease most likely represents a vascular anomaly occurring in patients with fair skin. The mainstay of treatment for inflammatory lesions has been oral antibiotics, but topical metronidazole also may be effective. Because recurrences are common after discontinuation of therapy, doses should be tapered as tolerated. Antibiotics are more effective for inflammatory lesions than for erythema and telangiectasia. Isotretinoin may be effective for inflammato…
