Rotavirus was detected in the stools of five children stricken with sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) over a three-week period. While none … f 36 infants including six who died of causes other than SIDS. Future attempts at the prevention of rotavirus infections should be directed at populations susceptible to sudden infant death syndrome.

Diarrhea in neonates, followed as a cohort, and their families was studied prospectively. The families were followed for an average of 16.3 months. Stool and serum specimens were obtained at least every three months. Stool specimens were examined for viruses by electron microscopy and cultured for enteropathogens, and serum specimens were tested for antibodies to rotavirus and Norwalk virus. During the study, 237 episodes of gastroenteritis were observed in 104 infants and their 62 siblings. Rotavirus, detected 82 times in 72 children, was by far the most common enteropathogen. It was associat

Thirteen gnotobiotic lambs, aged from a few hours to 8 days, were inoculated orally with single infections of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) (four animals), lamb rotavirus (five animals), and Cryptosporidium (four animals). Six gnotobiotic and two specific-pathogen-free lambs were co-inoculated with either rotavirus and ETEC (four animals), rotavirus and Cryptosporidium (two animals), or ETEC and Cryptosporidium (two animals). Lambs 4 days of age and older became only subclinically infected with either rotavirus, ETEC (08:K87:K99 ST+), or both enteropathogens given simultaneously. Six

Accurate estimates of rotavirus incidence in infants are crucial given disparities in rotavirus vaccine effectiveness from low-income settings. Sero-surveys are a pragmatic means of estimating incidence however serological data is prone to misclassification. This study used mixture models to estimate incidence of rotavirus infection from anti-rotavirus immunoglobulin A (IgA) titres in infants from Vellore, India, and Karonga, Malawi. IgA titres were measured using serum samples collected at 6 month intervals for 36 months from 373 infants from Vellore and 12 months from 66 infants from Karonga

Rotaviruses and noroviruses are leading viral causes of diarrhoea in children. A cross-sectional study was undertaken among children aged <5 years with acute gastroenteritis at Al-Jala Children's Hospital, Tripoli, Libya, from October 2007 to September 2008. Of 1,090 fecal samples collected, 260 from inpatients and 830 from outpatients, all inpatients and approximately a third of outpatients, selected systematically, were investigated for rotavirus and norovirus infection by ELISA and real-time RT-PCR, respectively. Of 520 fecal samples examined (inpatients = 260, outpatients = 260), 164 (31.5

To determine the epidemiology and risk factors of rotavirus infections in St. Lucia, 229 children in three valleys with varying levels of sanitation were studied for 2 years. A four-fold rise in complement fixation antibody to rotavirus antigen was used in paired samples as evidence of recent infection. Results showed that forty-eight per cent of infants experienced at least one infection during a two-year period, and 17% of children were reinfected. Infections occurred within the first months of life and peaked between 6 and 23 months of age. The peak infection coincided with the dry season i…

Rotavirus (RV) replication occurs within viroplasms (VMs) and is initiated by two RV non-structural proteins NSP2 and NSP5. Viruses exploit host cellular components for their replication and assembly; however, information on the roles of host proteins in VM dynamics and RV replication is limited. Thus, in the current study, we used proteomics to identify host proteins that interact with NSP5 during RV infection to delineate their role in virus replication. A large number of host proteins (n = 128) were found to interact with NSP5, and Gene Ontology enrichment analysis revealed the enrichment o

OBJECTIVES: Nosocomial rotavirus infections induce difficult problems for pediatric wards during winter epidemics. This prospective study was carried out to measure their incidence in a general pediatric ward by using epidemiological tools, clinical and molecular methods, and to examine the main factors increasing the risk of cross contamination.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was carried out on children, younger than three years old, hospitalized between 15 November 1996 and 1 March 1997. We examined the feces of all children for rotavirus on admission and during their hospital stay if they…

Infection with agents interpreted as causing or contributing to diarrhea (rotavirus, coronavirus, enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli, and cryptosporidia) were demonstrated in 24 of 32 newborn calves that had naturally occurring diarrheal disease. The calves were from 12 herds in Iowa. Infections as well as enteric lesions and hypoglobulinemia occurred more frequently among diarrheal calves than among nondiarrheal calves from these same herds. In most calves, infections were mixed; ie, both viruses, one or both viruses plus cryptosporidia, or rotavirus plus enterotoxigenic E coli.

Rotavirus diarrhea and Ascaris lumbricoides (Al) infection increase intestinal morbidity and were associated with altered immune responses that compromise the vaccine efficacy in children. The serum level of rotavirus specific IgA (RV-IgA) and cytokine profiles in A. lumbricoides (AI) infected preschool-aged Nigerian children were estimated following oral rotavirus vaccination. Nineteen of the 149 preschool-aged children (aged 6 to 60 months) with Ascaris lumbricoides infection paired with age and sex-matched helminth - free children were administered with oral rotavirus vaccine after intestin

Mouse is one of the infection animal models for rotavirus. Since the optimal age of mouse sensitive to rotavirus infection thus far has not been unified, we elucidated clinical symptoms, immune responses and pathological changes of mice in different ages after challenged by murine rotavirus wild strain EDIM (Epidemic Diarrhea of Infant Mice) to provide data for the estimation. One-week-old, two-week-old, and three-week-old BALB/c mice were inoculated with EDIM in the challenge dose of 235 ID50, 470 ID50 and 705 ID50 respectively and were compared to mock-infected controls. (1) Each year in France, diarrhoea caused by rotavirus kills about 10 infants under three years of age and leads to about 210 hospitalisations per 100 000 children under 5 years of age. (2) Two new oral rotavirus vaccines designed for immunisation during infancy are marketed or shortly to be marketed in France for the first time; one is based on a human strain and the other on both bovine and human strains. (3) The vaccine based on a human strain has been tested in a double-blind placebo-controlled trial involving about 63 000 infants. It had no statistically significant impact on mortality bu

Background and Objectives: Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) is a major contributor to pediatric morbidity and mortality worldwide. There is a scarcity of data on AGE in North Lebanon, a region profoundly affected by the Syrian refugee crisis and water sanitation issues. This study examines the prevalence, risk factors, and seasonal variations in adenovirus and rotavirus infections in children with AGE in North Lebanon. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from September 2022 to August 2023 on 400 children (1 month to 5 years old) with AGE that were admitted to pediatric depa…

Faeces samples from 218, one to 30 days old, diarrheic dairy calves in 65 dairy herds were screened for the presence of rotavirus and concurrent infections with coronavirus, Cryptosporidium, F5+ Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. Calves were grouped according to their age as follows: 1-7, 8-14, 15-21 and 22-30 days. Rotavirus infection was detected in 46.9%, 45.6%, 33.8% and 48.3% of the calves in the respective age-groups. No significant differences in the detection rate of rotavirus were found among calves on the different age-groups. Rotavirus was the only enteropathogen detected in 39 of

INTRODUCTION: Rotavirus is a common cause of infectious gastroenteritis in infants and children. The role of rotavirus infections in adults has potentially been underappreciated and there is a paucity of data on incidence and outcome of acute kidney injury in adult patients.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of adult hospitalized patients with microbiologically confirmed rotavirus infection. The primary outcome was occurrence of acute kidney injury related to rotavirus infection. Secondary outcomes were in-hospital mortality, duration of hospitalization and occurrence of sodi…

BACKGROUND: Erythema multiforme (EM) is an extremely rare condition in neonates, and studies suggest its association with certain infections and neonatal vaccinations; however, few specific etiological agents have been identified. Rotavirus, a common pathogenic gastrointestinal virus in the neonatal period that is preventable via vaccination, has not been identified as a possible etiology. We report the case of a neonate who was referred for skin lesions presenting as EM, where a meticulous workup identified rotavirus as the sole causative agent.
CASE SUMMARY: A 14-day-old male infant was adm

Group A rotaviruses (RVAs) are the primary cause of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in young children worldwide. Several commercial tests including latex agglutination, enzyme-linked assays (ELISA) and immunochromatographic tests (ICT) have been developed for the diagnosis of RVA infection. In the present study, the performance of two commercially available one-step chromatographic immunoassays, CerTest Rotavirus+Adenovirus (Biotec S.L, Zaragoza, Spain) and Vikia Rota-Adeno (bioMerieux SA, Lyon, France) were retrospectively evaluated using Real-time PCR as reference test.
