Coxiella burnetii in ruminants from Somalia.

Q fever in humans and coxiellosis in ruminants are caused by Coxiella burnetii, a zoonotic obligate intracellular bacterium. This infection poses significant health and economic risk. Effective control strategies rely on a thorough understanding of their epidemiology. In this study, we examined the prevalence of C. burnetii in 372 ruminants (190 goats, 133 cattle, and 49 sheep) from the Lower Shabelle and Benadir Regions of Somalia. Diagnostic testing was performed using a quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay that targets the bacterium’s repetitive element IS111 and the Indirect Fluorescent Antibody

[Limb amputation in 2 small ruminants].

A 2-month-old goat and a 5-year-old sheep were referred to the clinic due to severe lameness. The goat had a 5-week-old infected comminuted, left metacarpal fracture with extended osteomyelitis of the distal metacarpal bones. The sheep presented with an open oblique fracture of the left tibia and a concurrent, perforating wound of the fetlock joint in the same hindlimb. In both cases, limb amputation was performed at the level of the shoulder joint and the proximal femur, respectively, under general anesthesia combined with blocks of the large proximal limb nerves. The surgical procedure was s

Enzootic calcinosis in ruminants: A review.

Enzootic calcinosis (EC), is a chronic disease, caused by toxic plants, which has mainly affected ruminants for more than 100 years. It is characterized by a soft tissue calcification, hypercalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, hypoparathiroidism, hypercalcitoninism, osteonecrosis, and osteopetrosis. The toxic compound reported in some of these plants are 1,25(OH)2D3 glycosides. Characterization of calcinogenic principles were performed with Solanum glaucophyllum, Trisetum flavescens, Cestrum diurnum, and Stenotaphrum secundatum. Other plant species involved in EC are: Nierembergia rivularis, Nierember

D-lactic acidosis in neonatal ruminants.

Metabolic acidosis in calves with neonatal diarrhea was believed to be mainly caused by the loss of bicarbonate via the intestines or the formation of L-lactate during anaerobic glycolysis after tissue hypoperfusion in dehydrated calves. Because D-lactate was not considered to be of interest in human or veterinary medicine, routine diagnostic methods targeted the detection of L-lactate only. The development of stereospecific assays for the measurement of D-lactate facilitated research. This article summarizes the available information on D-lactic metabolic acidosis in neonatal ruminants.

Control of paratuberculosis in small ruminants.

The clinical presentation of paratuberculosis in small ruminants is unthriftiness (poor body condition); severe diarrhea is not a common clinical sign. In the USA, goats are primarily infected with bovine strains of paratuberculosis and sheep are primarily infected with ovine strains. Because ovine strains cannot be easily cultured, confirmation of a diagnosis is best done by polymerase chain reaction on tissue or fecal samples. Control programs must be tailored to the business objectives of the herd/flock owner and primarily involved changes in herd management, with diagnostic testing used st

Ticks of small ruminants in China.

The importance of ticks and tick-borne diseases of small ruminants in China is discussed. Of the 109 species of ticks identified to date in China, 45 species infest small ruminants. Five species have been proved to be involved, or possibly involved, in the transmission of tick-borne diseases. Anaplasma ovis, Babesia motasi, Babesia ovis and two unidentified species of Theileria, have been recorded in small ruminants in China. The diseases caused by these organisms are widespread in China, causing great economic losses, estimated at approximately 70 million USD per annum. Anaplasmosis occurs fr

Copper deficiency in ruminants; recent developments.

The aetiology of copper deficiency in grazing ruminants has been clarified by a number of recent discoveries: the low availability of copper in lush grazed pasture compared with conserved forage; the inhibitory effects on absorption of small increases in herbage molybdenum and sulphur and the antagonism from iron ingested in soil; and the wide genetic variation in copper absorption between different breeds of sheep. The economic importance of copper deficiency has been emphasised by the discovery of unsuspected causes of loss: increased susceptibility to infection and growth retardation in lam

Toxicology of sulfur in ruminants: review.

This review deals with the toxicology of sulfur in ruminants including toxicity, neurotoxic effects, and mechanism of toxic action of hydrogen sulfide, clinical signs, and treatment. It will report effects of excessive intake of sulfur by ruminants on feed intake, animal performance, ruminal digestion and motility, rumination, and other physiological functions. Poisoning of animals with sulfur from industrial emissions (sulfur dioxide) also is discussed. Excessive quantities of dietary sulfur (above .3 to .4%) as sulfate or elemental sulfur may cause toxic effects and in extreme cases can be f

Detection and molecular characterization of peste des petits ruminants virus from slaughtered domestic small ruminants in Sudan.

Obtaining a better overview of peste des petits ruminants epidemiology in North-East Africa is critical for guiding the ongoing PPR Global Control and Eradication Strategy. This study demonstrated PPRV exposure and potential endemic circulation among small ruminants through the identification and characterization of PPRV strains in lung tissues from slaughtered SR in Sudan. Lung tissues displaying pneumonia, comprising 83 cases (65 sheep and 18 goats), were collected from slaughterhouses in five Sudanese states. An IC-ELISA screening indicated an overall estimated antigenic prevalence of 24.1%

Molecular Detection and Seroprevalence Study of Peste des Petits Ruminants Virus in Small Ruminants in Central Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a severe, highly contagious, and fatal viral disease of small ruminants that causes significant production losses and mortality in Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study was conducted from December 2021 to July 2022 to determine the seroprevalence of the disease in the study area. Samples were collected from the outbreak to conduct viral isolation and molecular detection, focusing specifically on sheep and goats as the study animals in the investigation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical specimens were first collected from small ruminants showing signs

On assessing trait rumination using the Ruminative Response Scale.

INTRODUCTION: This study explores the stability of scores on psychometrically validated trait questionnaires over time. We illustrate potential pitfalls through a larger study that used the Ruminative Response Scale (RRS) to categorize participants prior to study inclusion into two groups based on their habitual tendency to ruminate. Surprisingly, when we re-administered the RRS at the start of an experimental session, significant score changes occurred, resulting in participants shifting between the two groups. METHODS: To address this, we modified our recruitment process, aiming to reduce c

Reflecting on rumination: Consequences, causes, mechanisms and treatment of rumination.

We review research showing that rumination has multiple negative consequences: (a) exacerbating psychopathology by magnifying and prolonging negative mood states, interfering with problem-solving and instrumental behaviour and reducing sensitivity to changing contingencies; (b) acting as a transdiagnostic mental health vulnerability impacting anxiety, depression, psychosis, insomnia, and impulsive behaviours; (c) interfering with therapy and limiting the efficacy of psychological interventions; (d) exacerbating and maintaining physiological stress responses. The mechanisms underlying ruminatio

Molecular characterization of peste des petits ruminants virus in small ruminants from the Savannah District, Northern Ivory Coast.

Objectives: Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious viral disease affecting sheep and goats, with significant socio-economic consequences. The disease is endemic in the Ivory Coast; molecular data on circulating strains, particularly in the northern Savannah district, remain limited. This study aimed to characterize the PPR virus (PPRV) strains circulating among sheep and goats in this area. Materials and Methods: A total of 355 nasal swabs were collected from unvaccinated small ruminants, regardless of clinical status, across three regions of the Savannah district (Poro, Tchol
