The Delivery of Kidney Care in Rural or Sparsely Populated Settings.

Social determinants of health and limited access to medical care contribute to underdiagnosis and late presentation of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Rural areas face unique challenges in providing optimal care for patients with CKD due to poverty, limited health care access, and geographical barriers. This review addresses the challenges of caring for rural patients with CKD and discuss potential strategies to increase health care equity. Furthermore, we examine rural disparities in patients with CKD, patients with kidney failure on in-center or home dialysis, and patients with kidney transpla

Population Prevalence and Correlates of Syphilis in Rural, Southwestern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: The global incidence of syphilis has increased in recent years. Understanding syphilis epidemiology will inform screening and treatment programs. However, such data are lacking in many communities. We outline a population-based syphilis screening program in a rural community in southwestern Uganda to describe the population prevalence of syphilis. METHODS: In June 2019 we conducted a cross-sectional, population-based study of adults >18 years of age. Two-stage syphilis testing was completed with Treponema pallidum hemagglutination (TPHA) rapid immunochromatographic testing, confir

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the awareness of HTN and its determinants among a rural population of Jazan region, Saudi Arabia. METHODOLOGY: We conducted a cross-sectional analytical study among six primary healthc…

PURPOSE: To determine the distribution of keratoconus indices in a 5-93-year-old healthy eyes of a rural population in Iran. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, multi-stage cluster sampling was applied to select subjects from two villages in the north and southwest of Iran. After obtaining informed consent, all subjects underwent ophthalmologic and optometric examinations. Corneal imaging by the Pentacam was done in subjects above 5 years between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., at least 3 h after wakeup. All subjects who had abnormal keratoconus indices were excluded. Our main outcome was keratometry-…

Epilepsy and neurocysticercosis: an incidence study in a Peruvian rural population.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy is a serious neurological disorder and neurocysticercosis (NCC), the central nervous system infection by the larvae of Taenia solium, is the main cause of acquired epilepsy in developing countries. NCC is becoming more frequent in industrialized countries due to immigration from endemic areas. Previously reported epilepsy incidences range from 30 to 50/100,000 people in industrialized countries and 90 to 122/100,000 people in developing countries. OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence of epilepsy in a cysticercosis endemic area of Peru. METHODS: A screening survey for p

Epilepsy and neurocysticercosis in rural Bolivia: a population-based survey.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the frequency of neurocysticercosis (NCC) in a well-defined prevalent cohort of epilepsy patients in the rural area of the Cordillera province. METHODS: We carried out a two-phase door-to-door neuroepidemiologic survey in a sample of 10,124 subjects in a rural area of the Cordillera Province, Bolivia, to detect the prevalence of the most common neurologic disorders including epilepsy. Suicidal risks in rural versus urban populations in Sardinia.

OBJECTIVE: Rural locations have been associated with suicidal risk; low population density may be a relevant factor. Accordingly, we investigated hypothesized associations between suicidal ideation and behavior with selected geographic and population-related measures and other factors. METHODS: Consenting adult patients at a mood disorder center in Cagliari, Sardinia, were assessed for the presence of suicidal ideation and acts and their association with selected demographic and clinical factors as well as indicators of urbanicity and rurality, including distance from the region's main metrop
