The pharmacological mechanisms involved in the substance P (SP)-induced pulmonary oedema were studied in isolated perfused rabbit lungs. Substance P induced a dose-dependent increase in the capillary filtration coefficient (Kf,c), responsible for oedema. Atropine, hemicholinium-3 and ruthenium red pretreatment partly protected the lungs against SP effects, while tetrodotoxin and hexamethonium did not significantly modify them. PURPOSE: To report an extremely rare case of tapioca melanoma of the iris in an Iranian patient.
CASE REPORT: A 50-year-old male patient presented with ocular pain and redness in the right eye for two weeks. The visual acuity was 7/10 and the intraocular pressure (IOP) was 30 mmHg. A lobulated amelanotic vascularized and nodular (tapioca-like) iris mass with a 180 o extent was seen in the right eye. Incisional biopsy of the mass revealed atypical mixed type (epithelioid and spindle cell) melanoma. Brachytherapy with the ruthenium-106 plaque resulted in complete regression of the tumor.

Histamine release from rat pleural and peritoneal mast cells not previously purified is presented. Cells are stimulated by different mechanism-acting pharmacologic agents. FNa, theophylline, ruthenium red, chlorpromazine and propranolol are used. Results show that both cell populations are pharmacologically different, with distinct responses in the presence of FNa or chlorpromazine. Chlorpromazine and propranolol are cytolytic agents.

A study was undertaken to clarify the usefulness of two cationic dyes, alcian blue (AB) and ruthenium red (RR) in demonstrating the defect in cellular membranes noted in minimal change nephropathy (MCN). Obstructive pulmonary collapse was produced by ligation of lobar bronchus in 41 healthy dogs. The atelectatic lung was examined electronmicroscopically by means of vapour fixation, ruthenium red procedure and tricomplex flocculation. The equilibration stability index of Pattle was determined and compared to the electromicroscopic findings. The experimentally produced obstructive pulmonary collapse was a mechanical phenomenon which secondarily caused qualitative changes in the production of the alveolar lining layer.
