Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of health loss and disabilities globally, burdening health care systems. Mild TBI is a common cause of emergency department visits. Computed tomography (CT) scans are the mainstay for acute TBI imaging. S100 calcium-binding protein B (S100B) biomarker is promising for predicting intracranial lesions on CTs in mild TBI. A comprehensive search of the literature was conducted on PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane electronic databases to find eligible studies reporting the diagnostic performance of S100B. A meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the

While the brain of most mammals suffers from irreversible damage after only short periods of low oxygen levels (hypoxia), marine mammals are excellent breath-hold divers that have adapted to hypoxia. In addition to physiological adaptations, such as large oxygen storing capacity and strict oxygen economy during diving, the neurons of the deep-diving hooded seal (Cystophora cristata) have an intrinsic tolerance to hypoxia. We aim to understand the molecular basis of this neuronal hypoxia tolerance. Previously, transcriptomics of the cortex of the hooded seal have revealed remarkably high expres

Increased S100B serum levels have been considered as a marker of glial pathology, brain damage, and blood-brain-barrier impairment. However, S100B expression has also been detected outside the nervous system, suggesting that altered S100B serum levels may not exclusively reflect brain-specific pathologies. Notably, S100B secretion in adipocytes seems to be down-regulated by insulin, and up-regulated by stress and fasting. Therefore, we assumed that dynamic changes of S100B could be observed by challenging healthy subjects with an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). OGTT was performed in 17 hea

The rabbit model provides an important experimental setting for the evaluation of antibiotic agents against pneumococcal meningitis. One of the primary targets of this model is the study of neuronal and glial cell damage in bacterial meningitis. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate whether a significant increase of S100B in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) as an indicator of white matter damage could be observed in this meningitis model. Seven rabbits were infected intracisternally with S. pneumoniae, and CSF S100B concentrations were examined serially before infection, at 12h, 14h, 17h,

CASE REPORT: A 39-year-old man with Type 1 diabetes mellitus was hospitalized with severe diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). Sixteen hours after admission he suddenly deteriorated having a respiratory then cardiac arrest. A brain computed tomography scan performed 2 h after the respiratory arrest showed severe cerebral oedema. Serial serum samples were stored and analysed for S-100beta protein. The S-100beta protein concentration was initially normal (0.12 microg/l) then rose significantly before the onset of the respiratory arrest (8.5 h = 0.61 microg/l, 14.5 h = 0.9 microg/l, 18 h = 1.6 microg/l,

Within the last decade there has arisen increasing appreciation of the role of glia-derived immune and neurotrophic cytokines, especially microglia-derived interleukin-1 and astrocyte-derived S100beta, in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease and of neurodegeneration in general. Available evidence now suggests that these neurotrophic and immune cytokines, produced in response to neuronal cell dysfunction or death, may elicit cellular and molecular responses resulting in further activation of glia and glial cytokine secretion, producing a cytokine cycle. In conditions characterized by chro

OBJECTIVE: Neurological symptoms (NS) were often reported in COVID-19 infection. We examined the plasma levels of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and S100B together, as brain injury biomarkers, in relation to persistent NS in a cohort of patients with COVID-19 during the acute phase of the disease.
METHODS: A total of 20 healthy controls and 58 patients with confirmed COVID-19 were enrolled in this prospective study. Serum GFAP and S100B levels were measured by using enzymle linked immunoassay method from blood samples.
RESULTS: Serum GFAP levels were found to be significantly higher

The decline in mental fitness associated with Alzheimer disease is accompanied by physical changes in the brain, including the development of characteristic plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, but the pathogenesis of those changes is not clear. Recent work suggests that the activation of microglia in response to injury, illness, aging, or other causes begins a cascade of events that can best be characterized as an inflammatory process. This cascade is mediated at first by the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin 1, which is overexpressed by the activated microglia. Through various pathways, i

Septic shock is a condition that affects many organs, but little is known about the effects on the central nervous system. S-100B, an acidic low molecular weight protein, has attracted considerable interest as a marker for brain damage and disintegration of the blood-brain barrier. It is released into the cerebrospinal fluid and blood from brain tissue after brain damage. We studied S-100B in a porcine model of endotoxemic shock that resembles human Gram-negative septic shock. Ten piglets received IV endotoxin, and plasma samples were collected before the endotoxin infusion and each hour (1-6

BACKGROUND: Neonatal death in full-term infants who suffer from perinatal asphyxia (PA) is a major subject of investigation, since few tools exist to predict patients at risk of ominous outcome. We studied the possibility that urine S100B measurement may identify which PA-affected infants are at risk of early postnatal death.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In a cross-sectional study between January 1, 2001 and December 1, 2006 we measured S100B protein in urine collected from term infants (n = 132), 60 of whom suffered PA. According to their outcome at 7 days, infants with PA were subsequent

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide and a major global health concern. In the United States, individuals of Black or African American racial identity experience disproportionately higher rates of TBI and suffer from worse postinjury outcomes. Contemporary research agendas have largely overlooked or excluded Black populations, resulting in the continued marginalization of Black patient populations in TBI studies, thereby limiting the generalizability of ongoing research to patients in the United States and around the world. This review aims to highl

The identification of reliable brain-specific biomarkers in periphery contributes to better understanding of normal neurophysiology and neuropsychiatric diseases. The neurospecific proteins BDNF, NSE, VILIP-1, and S100B play an important role in the pathogenesis of neuropsychiatric disorders, including epilepsy. This study aimed to assess the correspondence of the expression of BDNF, NSE, VILIP-1, and S100B in the blood (serum and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs)) to the in vivo hippocampal levels of subjects with drug-resistant epilepsy who underwent neurosurgery (N = 44) using mult

Obesity is a health problem that involves fat accumulation in adipose and other tissues and causes cell dysfunction. Long-chain saturated fatty acids can induce and propagate inflammation, which may also contribute to the brain alterations found in individuals with obesity. Fatty acids accumulate in astrocytes in situations of blood‒brain barrier disruption, such as inflammatory conditions. Furthermore, the increase in tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and S100 calcium-binding protein B (S100B) secretion is considered an essential component of the inflammatory response. We hypothesize that t

Blood-based biomarkers of brain injury may be useful for monitoring brain health in athletes at risk for concussions. Two putative biomarkers of sport-related concussion, neurofilament light (NfL), an axonal structural protein, and S100 calcium-binding protein beta (S100B), an astrocyte-derived protein, were measured in saliva, a biofluid which can be sampled in an athletic setting without the risks and burdens associated with blood sampled by venipuncture. Samples were collected from men's and women's collegiate water polo players (n = 65) before and after a competitive tournament. Head impac

In rats with acute hypo- and hyperglycemia the initial effects of free angiotensin IV and its complexes with functionally different carrier proteins (transport protein BSA, neuron-specific protein S100b) on hemodynamics and behavior of rats were qualitatively altered, in comparison with those in intact animals. At the same time, free angiotensin IV under conditions of hypo- and hyperglycemia paradoxically acquired functions of angiotensin II (moderate hypertension, tachycardia, polydipsia and activation of instrumental drinking behavior). Concurrently, complexes of angiotensin IV with BSA and

OBJECTIVES: Delirium is associated with an increased risk of long-term cognitive decline, suggesting the possibility of concurrent central nervous system (CNS) injury. S100B is a putative biomarker of CNS injury and elevated serum levels in delirium have been reported. Here we hypothesize that delirium is associated with raised concentrations of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) S100B.
METHODS: Forty-five patients with hip fracture aged over 60 and awaiting surgery under spinal anesthesia were assessed for delirium pre- and post-operatively. CSF S100B levels were measured in samples collected at the
