BACKGROUND: Emamectin benzoate (EB) is a dominating pharmaceutical drug used for the treatment and control of infections by sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) on Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L). Fish with an initial mean weight of 132 g were experimentally medicated by a standard seven-day EB treatment, and the concentrations of drug in liver, muscle and skin were examined. To investigate how EB affects Atlantic salmon transcription in liver, tissues were assessed by microarray and qPCR at 7, 14 and 35 days after the initiation of medication.

A series of deletion-substitution analogs of salmon calcitonin (SCT) have been prepared containing combinations of a glycine substitution in position 8 and deletions of serine-2 and tyrosine-22. Biological activity of the analogs with respect to native SCT were determined in the rat hypocalcemic assay and by studying stimulation of cAMP formation and competition for binding of 125I-labeled SCT in T47 D human breast cancer cells. Hair loss is a commonly encountered problem. In this study, hair growth was enhanced by daily oral ingestion of salmon nasal cartilage proteoglycan (PG) in mice. Proteoglycan stimulated vesicular endothelial growth factor production in human follicle dermal papilla cells through insulin growth factor-1 receptor signaling, suggesting the possibility of hair loss improvement by PG ingestion.

OBJECTIVES: To determine risk factors and spatial epidemiology of SPD in dogs from northern California; to describe the clinicopathologic, microbiologic, and imaging findings of SPD in these dogs; and to evaluate treatments and outcomes for SPD.

Salmonids freeze to death if they come into contact with ice. Many marine fish species that inhabit icy sea waters synthesize antifreeze proteins (AFP) to protect them from freezing. Production of stable lines of freeze-resistant salmon and other species would greatly facilitate development of sea-pen aquaculture in many regions. The present study was designed to investigate the effects of salmon calcitonin (SCT) on the incidence of the pituitary tumors in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats.
