Heavy metal predators: diverse elemental enrichment across the weapons of scorpions.

Scorpions diverged from their closest relatives around the Ordovician Period, and since then, environmental interactions have shaped the evolution of the material properties of their exoskeletons. Hardening of this structure via the incorporation of transition metals has enabled biomechanical advancements in weapon development. Scorpion weapons consist of the stinger (telson) and claws (chelae) and contain diverse metals such as zinc, manganese and iron, though little is known about comparative patterns of incorporation across the wider clade. In this study, we harness X-ray-driven microanalyt…

Pinching or stinging? Comparing prey capture among scorpions with contrasting morphologies.

BACKGROUND: Scorpions can use their pincers and/or stingers to subdue and immobilize their prey. A scorpion can thus choose between strategies involving force or venom, or both, depending on what is required to subdue its prey. Scorpions vary greatly in the size and strength of their pincers, and in the efficacy of their venom. Whether this variability is driven by their defensive or prey incapacitation functionis unknown. In this study, we test if scorpion species with different pincer morphologies and venom efficacies use these weapons differently during prey subjugation. To that end, we obs…

Neurological effects of venomous bites and stings: snakes, spiders, and scorpions.

Snake and spider bites, as well as scorpion sting envenoming, are neglected diseases affecting millions of people all over the world. Neurological complications vary according to the offending animal, and are often directly related to toxic effects of the venom, affecting the central nervous system, the neuromuscular transmission, the cardiovascular system, or the coagulation cascade. Snake bite envenoming may result in stroke or muscle paralysis. Metalloproteinases and other substances (common in vipers and colubrids) have anticoagulant or procoagulant activity, and may induce ischemic or hem

[Scorpion stings].

This article begins by describing how Iberian Peninsula scorpion bites poison humans. Then the only potentially dangerous scorpion species in the peninsula is identified. Other types of scorpions or those which inhabit other continents are not included. Once identified, the author describes the characteristics and effects on the symptoms of this scorpion bite and how to treat and handle a victim, both at the moment when the victim is bitten and in hospitals.

Biology, venom composition, and scorpionism induced by brazilian scorpion Tityus stigmurus (Thorell, 1876) (Scorpiones: Buthidae): A mini-review.

Scorpionism is a serious public health problem in various regions of the world. In Brazil, a high number of accidents by scorpions have been reported. From 2014 to 2018, about 547,000 cases were recorded, resulting in 466 deaths. The scorpion Tityus stigmurus is the predominant species in the northeast of Brazil, being responsible for most scorpionism cases in this region. With the aid of the transcriptomic approach of the venom gland of this species, components as neurotoxins, antimicrobials, metal chelating peptides and hypotensins, have been identified and characterized in silico, showing d…

Scorpion sting and allergic reaction to scorpion venom: A case-based review.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a young patient with scorpion sting (SS) with typical lesions of urticaria besides the local SS clinical picture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic screening of articles dating from 1966 to 2021 was conducted in the main databases. All articles included the association between SS and urticaria. A new case report is added to the published list. RESULTS: The literature search found 5 articles with 29 patients with SS and urticaria/allergic reactions. We performed our analysis by adding our present case, resulting in a total of 30 cases. Most were male, and their ages v

Studies of scorpion antivenins. 2. Venom collection and scorpion colony maintenance.

This paper describes methods used successfully in a large-scale programme for the collection of scorpion venom. Effective methods were developed for the maintenance of a laboratory colony of over 5000 adult scorpions. Electrical stimulation of the scorpions to induce venom emission was greatly facilitated by tranquillizing them with CO(2) and using a slightly modified, snap-type mousetrap as a scorpion-holding device. This technique made for rapid handling of specimens with little risk to the technicians and minimal trauma to the scorpions. Specimens held under proper conditions yielded venom …

Applying Ensemble Ecological Niche Modeling to Identify High Risk Areas for Scorpions' Sting.

Scorpion stings are a global health problem, potentially impacting thousands, especially across northern Africa and the Middle East. However, scorpions are comparatively understudied compared to other venomous animals, and little is known about their distributions and associated spatial patterns of sting risk. Timely access to medical treatment after scorpion stings is crucial to positive medical outcomes, but it remains poorly understood how accessible health care is for populations at risk. Thus, mapping hotspots of sting risk and identifying vulnerable populations can greatly enhance mitiga…

Leishmanicidal activity of the venoms of the Scorpions Brotheas amazonicus and Tityus metuendus.

Leishmaniasis is a vector-transmitted zoonosis caused by different species of the genus Leishmania, with a wide clinical spectrum. It is a public health problem aggravated by a series of limitations regarding treatment. In the search for new therapeutic alternatives, scorpion venoms are a source of multifunctional molecules that act against the natural resistance of pathogens. This work evaluated the antileishmanial potential of Brotheas amazonicus and Tityus metuendus venoms against the promastigote forms of Leishmania amazonensis e Leishmania guyanensis. The venoms of B. amazonicus and T. me
