Distribution of complement regulators (CD46, CD55 and CD59) in skin appendages, and in benign and malignant skin neoplasms.

Immunohistochemical studies were performed to establish the distribution of membrane cofactor protein (MCP; CD46), decay-accelerating (DAF; CD55) and homologous restriction factor (HRF20; CD59), in normal skin appendages, and in benign and malignant skin neoplasms. At least two of these regulators were detected on normal eccrine glands, apocrine glands and sebaceous glands. They were also found in cellular naevi (CN), seborrhoeic keratoses (SK), basal cell carcinoma (BCC), Bowen's disease (BD), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and Paget's disease (PD). Although there were slight differences in th

Oncocytic lipoadenoma of the parotid gland: a report of a new case and review of the literature.

Oncocytic lipoadenoma is a rare salivary gland tumour composed of adipose tissue and oncocytic epithelial cells in varied proportions. This tumour is still not included in the current WHO classification of salivary gland neoplasms. We herein report a further case of oncocytic lipoadenoma originating in the parotid gland of a 55-year-old woman. The tumour presented as a slowly growing asymptomatic left-sided parotid gland mass. The resected tumour measured 2.7 cm in maximum diameter and was composed of oncocytoma-like epithelial component admixed with mature adipocytes that made up 10% of the w

Pleomorphic adenoma: Indeed, a versatile tumor.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common and well-studied salivary gland neoplasm. It is a benign tumor most commonly occurring in the parotid gland although it can be seen in other major and minor salivary glands. There is a variety of metaplasia seen in Pleomorphic adenoma most commonly squamous metaplasia, others noted are osseous metaplasia, oncocytic metaplasia, sebaceous metaplasia, and adipocytic metaplasia. Also, at times tyrosine crystalloids are seen. This study discusses a few of the metaplasia and the presence of tyrosine crystals in pleomorphic adenoma. Indeed, this tumor proves tru

Lacrimal caruncle primary basal cell carcinoma: case report and review.

BACKGROUND: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a common malignant skin neoplasm. The surface of the caruncle contains sebaceous glands, hair follicles, and lacrimal and sweat gland elements. Consequently, the caruncle may spawn any neoplasm that occurs in the conjunctiva, skin, or lacrimal gland. We report a patient with a primary BCC located on the lacrimal caruncle. METHODS: An 80-year-old man with a 5-month history of a gradually enlarging left caruncular neoplasm was seen. The lesion was nodular and irregularly brown-black colored, with no involvement of adjacent conjunctiva or skin. He had a

Sebaceous lymphadenoma of the parotid gland.

Sebaceous lymphadenoma is a rare benign salivary gland tumor of uncertain histogenesis. We report such a case in a 37-year-old female presenting with a parotid swelling. Recognition of key histological features will readily allow differentiation of this neoplasm from its benign and malignant mimics. The prognosis is excellent following excision.

Rare Mimic of Conjunctivitis: Conjunctival Intraepithelial Sebaceous Carcinoma.

Sebaceous carcinoma, an uncommon malignant neoplasm, often arises de novo from periocular sebaceous glands. Commonly manifesting as diffuse eyelid thickening, sebaceous carcinoma can mimic other inflammatory processes such as persistent chalazion or blepharitis. Delayed diagnosis often complicates the disease course due to its indolent presentation. Described is a rare case of sebaceous carcinoma entirely confined to the conjunctival epithelium of the upper eyelid. An 80-year-old female presented for evaluation of bothersome "cysts" under her left upper lid as well as blurry vision in her left

YAP1::MAML2 Fusion in Adnexal Tumors Combining Poroma and Sebaceous Components: Report of Two Cases.

Poroma is a benign sweat gland tumor harboring YAP1::MAML2 and YAP1::NUTM1 fusion transcripts in most of the cases. Recently, YAP1 fusions have also been detected in trichoblastomas and in 1 sebaceoma. To expand the spectrum of YAP1 -fused adnexal tumors, we report herein 2 cases of adnexal tumors with YAP1::MAML2 fusion transcript combining a poroma and a sebaceous component. These 10- and 7-mm diameter neoplasms arose in a 55-year-old man and in a 90-year-old woman and were located on the back and the right breast, respectively. Microscopically, both lesions harbored a biphasic appearance re

Case Report: Optimum excision with split skin graft closure in the management of penile sebaceous carcinoma.

Sebaceous carcinoma (SC) is a rare malignant skin neoplasm derived from the meibomian gland of adnexal epithelium, which is frequently confused with basal cell carcinoma (BCC), exhibiting sebaceous differentiation and commonly found in the head and neck regions. We report a case of penile sebaceous carcinoma, an extremely rare anatomical site for SC. A 68-year-old man presented with a 4-month history of painless, non-healing ulcerated nodules over the left side of the penile shaft. Wedge biopsy showed adenocarcinoma with signet ring differentiation. We proceeded with wide local excision (WLE)

Synchronous ipsilateral sebaceous lymphadenoma and membranous basal cell adenoma of the parotid.

A 46-year-old man presented with persistent right otalgia and hearing loss. Exam was significant for a mildly tender retromandibular mass with intact nonerythematous overlying skin. Computerized tomography with intravenous contrast of the neck revealed 2 relatively well circumscribed masses in the right parotid gland. Although 1 lesion was suspected to be a necrotic lymph node, histologic analysis after superficial parotidectomy demonstrated 2 unique salivary gland tumors. Diagnoses of both sebaceous lymphadenoma and membranous basal cell adenoma were rendered. The occurrence of unique, synchr

Pagetoid tumour spread in periocular sebaceous gland carcinoma: a comparative analysis in 130 patients.

PURPOSE: To compare the clinical features, histopathology features, treatment, and prognosis of patients with and without pagetoid tumour spread secondary to periocular sebaceous gland carcinoma (SGC). METHODS: Retrospective study of 130 patients with SGC who underwent conjunctival map biopsy. RESULTS: Of the 130 patients with SGC, 30 (23%) patients had histopathology proven pagetoid tumour spread. On multivariate analysis, increasing tumour basal diameter (p < 0.001) was predictive of pagetoid tumour spread. The odds ratio for tumour basal diameter in prediction of map biopsy positivity for

Trichoblastoma is the most common neoplasm developed in nevus sebaceus of Jadassohn: a clinicopathologic study of a series of 155 cases.

Nevus sebaceus of Jadassohn is a hamartoma that combines epidermal, follicular, sebaceous, and apocrine gland abnormalities. Classically, several types of cutaneous neoplasms have been associated with this hamartoma, with basal cell carcinoma being the most frequently described malignancy. We studied a series of 155 examples of nevus sebaceus of Jadassohn with clinicopathologic correlation. Several histopathologic changes related to the age of the patients were found. In our series, we could not identify any cases of authentic basal cell carcinoma. In contrast, several examples of primitive fo

Nonsebaceous lymphadenoma arising as a painless subcutaneous nodule on the eyebrow.

Salivary gland tumors can rarely present in skin excision specimens and can pose a diagnostic challenge to dermatopathologists. We present an exceptional case of a salivary gland type nonsebaceous lymphadenoma presenting as a painless subcutaneous nodule on the right medial eyebrow of a 16-year-old male, mimicking a primary cutaneous adnexal neoplasm. Histologic evaluation revealed a well-circumscribed to partially encapsulated nodule with a marked lymphoid infiltrate including reactive germinal centers. Within the lymphoid component was a central epithelial cystic neoplasm with tubuloglandula

Pleomorphic adenoma: a rare presentation in buccal salivary gland with extensive squamous and mucous metaplasia.

Pleomorphic Adenoma (PA) is the most common salivary gland tumor and accounts for about 60% of all salivary gland neoplasms. Intraorally, the hard palate is the most common presenting site (50-60%) followed by upper lip (15-20%) and rarely buccal mucosa (8-10%). Histopathologically, PA shows diverse morphology resulting from amalgamation of cellular and stromal components. The PA may show changes in the stromal and epithelial components, such as sebaceous, lipocytic and oncocytic metaplasia. A rare characteristic of PA is to show extensive squamous and mucous differentiation which poses diagno

Oncocytic lipoadenoma of the salivary gland: a clinicopathologic analysis of 7 cases and review of the literature.

Oncocytic lipoadenoma is an exceedingly uncommon neoplasm of the salivary gland composed of oncocytic epithelium and adipose tissue. Retrospective. Seven cases of oncocytic lipoadenoma were analyzed in order to further characterize the clinical and pathologic features of this rare tumor. The patients included six males and one female who ranged from 40 to 83 years of age (mean 62 years) at presentation. All tumors arose in the parotid gland. Grossly, the tumors were solitary, well circumscribed and had light brown to yellow cut surfaces. Histologically, the tumors were composed of an admixed p

Clear cell myoepithelioma of palate with emphasis on clinical and histological differential diagnosis.

Myoepitheliomas account for less than 1% of all salivary gland tumors and mostly occur in the parotid gland and palate. A 58-year old male patient reported to the Outpatient Department of PMS College of Dental Science and Research (Kerala, India) with a slow growing painless swelling on the palate for 4 years. Pleomorphic adenoma, basal cell adenoma, myoepithelioma, cyst adenoma, lipoma, neurofibroma, neurilemmoma and leiomyoma were considered. Histopathology revealed a thinly encapsulated tumor composed mainly of sheets of clear cells mixed with cells having eosinophilic cytoplasm. Histopatho

Upper eyelid reconstruction using a combination of a nasal septal chondromucosal graft and a Fricke flap: a case report.

Sebaceous carcinoma is a malignant neoplasm that usually arises in the sebaceous glands of the eyelids. Its pathogenesis is unknown; however, irradiation history, immunosuppression, and use of diuretics are known risk factors. The mainstay of treatment for sebaceous carcinoma of the eyelid is wide surgical resection with a safety margin of 5 to 6 mm, which often results in full-thickness defects. The reconstruction of a full-thickness defect of the eyelid should be approached using a three-lamella method: a mucosal component replacing the conjunctiva, a cartilage component for the tarsal plate

Recurrent sebaceous gland carcinoma of eyelid previously diagnosed as basal cell carcinoma: case report.

Sebaceous gland carcinoma (SGC) of the eyelid is a highly malignant neoplasm that arises from the meibomian glands, glands of Zeis, and sebaceous glands of the skin. The characteristics of this disease are high recurrence rate, significant metastatic potential, and notable mortality rate, which are quite different from basal cell carcinoma (BCC). We report the case of a 37-year-old woman with the history of left lower eyelid BCC (diagnosed 9 years ago), who had left parotid lymph nodes metastases and local recurrence twice. The chief complaint during visit was a left upper eyelid swelling mass

Immunoreactivity for Sox10 in Basaloid Neoplasms of The Skin.

Basaloid tumors of the skin pose a diagnostic challenge to pathologists, because the differential diagnosis is broad, sometimes with subtle differentiating features. We evaluated SOX10 expression in 120 primary cutaneous tumors with epidermal, sweat glandular, neuroendocrine/neuroectodermal, follicular, and sebaceous lineages. Our findings were compared with those of previous studies that evaluated SOX10 in tumors of the skin. SOX10 staining was seen in the majority of sweat gland tumors with the exception of syringoma and microcystic adnexal carcinoma. There were no immunoreactive cases among
