Baccharoides anthelmintica is the most popular traditional Uighur medicines used for vitiligo. The chemical investigation of the seeds of B. anthelmintica led to the isolation of three new flavonoid glycosides (Vernosides A-C). Their structures were determined by comprehensive analysis of spectroscopic data including 1D and 2D NMR and HRMS data. Vernosides A-C were evaluated for their effects on tyrosinase activity, Vernoside B can enhance tyrosinase activity.

BACKGROUND: Persea americana seeds are widely used in traditional Mexican medicine to treat rheumatism, asthma, infectious processes as well as diarrhea and dysentery caused by intestinal parasites.
METHODS: The chloroformic and ethanolic extracts of P. americana seeds were prepared by maceration and their amoebicidal, giardicidal and trichomonicidal activity was evaluated. These extracts were also tested against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv, four mono-resistant and two multidrug resistant strains of M. tuberculosis as well as five non tuberculosis mycobacterium strains by MABA assay.

Antioxidant activity of hydro alcoholic extract of Nelumbo nucifera seeds (HANN) was studied using in vitro and in vivo models. Total phenolic content in HANN was found to be 7.61 +/- 0.04% (w/w). Characteristic HPTLC fingerprints of HANN were also made using different solvent systems. The HANN exhibited strong free radical scavenging activity as evidenced by the low IC(50) values in both DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl) (6.12 +/- 0.41 microg/ml) and nitric oxide (84.86 +/- 3.56 microg/ml) methods. A 19-y old male who intentionally ingested an unknown quantity of Datura stramonium seeds to experience its hallucinogenic effects was found dead. Hyoscyamine and scopolamine were detected in postmortem blood and urine. Blood concentrations of hyoscyamine and scopolamine were 1.1 and 0.2 microg/mL, respectively; in urine only hyoscyamine at 14.2 microg/mL was found. This fatality presents the highest blood concentrations ever reported and confirms that death was due to Datura Stramonium seed ingestion.

Dichloromethane extracts of the seeds of Nephelium lappaceum afforded two new diastereomeric monoterpene lactones, 1 and 2, and the known butenolide siphonodin (3), as well as kaempferol 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside-7-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranoside. Compounds 1 and 2 represent a new monoterpene skeleton, and their structures were elucidated by extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectral data interpretation.
