Behavioral and self-concept differences in tattooed and nontattooed college students.

235 college students rated themselves on a series of bipolar adjectives and answered questions about their involvement in a variety of "risky" behaviors, including tattooing and body piercing. 29 tattooed students rated themselves as more adventurous, creative, artistic, individualistic, and risky than those without tattoos. The 98 tattooed males considered themselves more attractive. Behaviorally, those with tattoos reported smoking more cigarettes. Tattooed men also reported more sexual partners, were more likely to report they had been arrested, and were more likely to have body piercings.

Depressive symptoms and self-concept in young people with spina bifida.

Examined self-reported depressive symptoms in 72 young people with spina bifida, ages 9 to 18:11, and matched able-bodied comparison subjects, using the Dimensions of Depression Profile for Children and Adolescents (Harter & Nowakowski, 1987). Independent variables included gender, self-perceptions (including physical appearance), and perceived social support. Young people with spina bifida were at greater risk of depressive mood, low self-worth, and suicidal ideation. Girls, independent of disability, were at greater risk of depressive mood, low self-worth, and self-blame. Multiple regression

Assessing Self-Concept in Children (Aged 5-7) with Functional Dyslalia.

Language not only plays a powerful role in human life, as it is also a crucial factor in our minds. It shapes our personality, memory and even the way in which we see the world, as well as playing a fundamental role in the building of self-concept and self-esteem. Having a good self-concept, that is, knowing one's own qualities and strengths, will, in turn, promote good self-esteem. The aim of this research was to analyze self-concept in 50 children (aged 5-7) with functional dyslalia in the city of Granada (Spain). A quantitative approach was taken, with a non-experimental design; it was desc

Implicit and explicit self-concept of neuroticism in borderline personality disorder.

PURPOSE: In the past, research on personality in borderline personality disorder (BPD) used primarily questionnaires suggesting heightened neuroticism in BPD. Self-report instruments inform about the conscious or explicit self-concept. BPD patients are known to show negative distortion with exaggeration of negative affect in the self-report. Neuroticism represents a risk factor for mental disorders. Indirect measures are available that tap into the implicit self-concept of neuroticism. The implicit self-concept refers to individual differences in associative representations of the self. The pr

Shame and implicit self-concept in women with borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Shame is considered to be a central emotion in borderline personality disorder and to be related to self-injurious behavior, chronic suicidality, and anger-hostility. However, its level and impact on people with borderline personality disorder are largely unknown. The authors examined levels of self-reported shame, guilt, anxiety, and implicit shame-related self-concept in women with borderline personality disorder and assessed the association of shame with self-esteem, quality of life, and anger-hostility. METHOD: Sixty women with borderline personality disorder completed self-rep

Relationships between physical activity, general self-efficacy, sport motivation and physical self-concept among primary school students.

INTRODUCTION: Physical activity is fundamental to children's physical and psychological development, yet the psychological correlates of the association between physical activity and physical self-concept remain incompletely understood. This study examined associations among self-reported physical activity, general self-efficacy, positive sport-participation motivation, and physical self-concept in Chinese primary school students and tested a theory-informed serial indirect model of cross-sectional associations. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 782 students in Dunhua, Jil

The aer-o-scope: proof of concept of a pneumatic, skill-independent, self-propelling, self-navigating colonoscope.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Endoscopic screening of the colon with available instruments requires considerable training, is often painful, and carries a risk of perforation. New instrument platforms for endoscopic screening could be useful. The aim of this study was to evaluate the extent of colonic intubation by using a novel self-propelled, self-navigating endoscope (the Aer-O-Scope; GI View Ltd, Ramat Gan, Israel). METHODS: Twelve young healthy volunteers underwent complete bowel preparation followed by a nonsedated examination using the novel device. Each examination was followed by a standard col

Is "Self-Experience" Really a Transdiagnostic Concept? Preliminary Evidence in Favor of the Transdiagnostic Conception of Functional Analytic Psychotherapy.

Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP) offers a radically behavioral and transdiagnostic conception of the formation of the "self" and the appearance of a diversity of psychological problems. This study examined the extent to which a wide variety of psychological disorders (somatization, obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility/aggressiveness, phobic anxiety, paranoid ideation, and psychoticism) and a global index of psychopathological severity may in fact be linked to problems of the "self" according to the FAP conception. Two questionnaires, one relate

Self-esteem in children with infantile hydrocephalus and in their siblings. Use of the Piers-Harris Self-Concept Scale.

Self-esteem, evaluated with the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale, an 80 item, self-report questionnaire, was investigated in 40 children (mean age 13.2 years) with infantile hydrocephalus (IH) and in 37 of their siblings (mean age 13.3 years). Thirty-one of the IH children had normal intelligence and 9 had mild mental retardation (MR). A comparison group consisting of 69 age-matched school children (mean age 10.3 years) was also evaluated. One-way analysis of variance indicated that the group IH with MR had the lowest mean scores, IH without MR was intermediate and the comparison gro

Mental bootstrapping enables human-level concept learning in self-supervised deep models.

How agents acquire abstract concepts from sparse, diverse examples-often without explicit supervision-remains a central problem in cognitive science and artificial intelligence. Human studies suggest that this ability depends on mental bootstrapping, the gradual construction of complex concepts from simpler partial structures. Building on this idea, we develop a self-supervised framework that trains models on systematically simplified versions of abstract reasoning tasks containing incomplete but structured concept cues. This algorithm enables models to form internal abstractions under limited

Trait anxiety and self-concept among children and adolescents with food neophobia.

Food problems in children and adolescents often have a detrimental effect on the emotional and psychological wellbeing of their parents. However, the impact of such problems on the psychological wellbeing of children and adolescents themselves has been less widely studied. The purpose of this study was to determine whether children and adolescents with food neophobia differed in trait anxiety and dimensions of self-concept from their neophilic and their average peers. A community sample of 831 participants (368 males and 463 females) between the ages of 8 and 16 were classified into six groups

Self-concept among youth with a chronic illness: a meta-analytic review.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to use meta-analytic techniques to compare self-concept between children and adolescents (abbreviated to youth) with a chronic illness versus healthy controls, and to examine methodological influences on effect sizes. METHOD: Databases were searched for asthma, cerebral palsy, diabetes, epilepsy, and juvenile arthritis. Inclusion criteria were: 1) original research studies in English; 2) youth <18 years; 3) the inclusion of self-reported self-concept; and 4) data available to estimate effect sizes. Study quality was assessed with a modified Quality Index.

Impact of urinary incontinence on self-concept in children with spina bifida.

PURPOSE: Low self-concept and self-esteem are thought to be the main predictors of psychological problems in children and adolescents. Children with spina bifida are thought to be at an increased risk for low self-concept and self-esteem given their disabilities. We examined the impact of urinary continence on self-concept in children with myelomeningocele. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 50 patients 7 to 19 years old with spina bifida were evaluated using the Hartner self-perception profile. Each patient was asked to self-rate on a scale of 1 to 4 using specific domains of self-concept, in

Learning difficulties, social intelligence, and self-concept: connections to bully-victim problems.

Learning skills, social intelligence, and self-concept were related to each other and to bully-victim problems among fifth-grade children (79 boys and 62 girls, aged 11-12 years). In addition to exploring connections between single variables, a person-oriented approach was applied in order to analyze children's value patterns with respect to learning skills, self-concept, and social intelligence, and how these value patterns are related to bully-victim problems. Social intelligence was found to be positively correlated with learning skills, but negatively related to victimization. Bullying was

Changes in self-concept and body image during alopecia induced cancer chemotherapy.

Alopecia as a result of cancer chemotherapy has been reported to cause changes to the self-concept and body image. In a prospective longitudinal study, self-concept and body image were analysed in 29 patients after histological confirmation of gynaecological malignancy, mainly ovarian cancer, who were assigned to receive a complete-alopecia-inducing PEC combination chemotherapy (cisplatin 50 mg/m2, epirubicin 60 mg/m2, and cyclophosphamide 500 mg/m2 in 1 day every 28 days). The analysis was performed before the commencement of treatment and repeated when alopoecia was complete and after comple
