Self-assessment of melanoma risk factors versus expert assessment: A systematic review of agreement.

The number of melanoma cases has been rising over the past decades. Hence, screening is essential to provide early and effective patient management. However, screening for risk factors binds medical resources and may be conducted by patients. To evaluate the quality and validity of such a self-assessment, a systematic review of patient-expert agreement in dermatologic examinations is presented. A systematic review of studies examining participant-expert agreement on melanoma risk factors that were published until May 2025 was conducted. Included sources were retrieved from PubMed, the Web of S

Assessment of Somatosensory Function and Self-harm in Adolescents.

IMPORTANCE: Self-harm is a risk factor for suicide in adolescents, with the prevalence highest in young people in group and residential care programs. Although no established risk factors for self-harm exist, adolescents who self-harm may have decreased pain sensitivity, but this has not been systematically investigated. OBJECTIVE: To assess somatosensory function using quantitative sensory testing (QST) in children and adolescents living in care grouped by the number of episodes of self-harm in the past year and compare their somatosensory profiles with community control participants to inve

Validity and Reliability of a Rosacea Self-Assessment Tool.

The lack of validated rosacea assessment tools is a hurdle in assessing rosacea severity. This article discusses a valid and reliable rosacea severity self-assessment tool (RSAT) to measure rosacea severity. To determine test-retest validity, participants completed the self-assessment twice. A blinded physician graded the participant's disease severity with the Investigator Global Severity (IGS) score. Pearson correlations were used to assess the relationship between the self-assessment measure and the IGS. Test-retest RSAT measurements were correlated. The RSAT represents a valid and reliable

[Development of a questionnaire for the assessment of the voice self-concept].

BACKGROUND: Common self-assessment questionnaires on voice diagnostics focus mostly on functionality of the voice and the impact on the quality of life. Personal aspects such as the relationship with one's own voice and its self-perception are for the most part not taken into consideration. OBJECTIVES: In this article a questionnaire for the assessment of the voice self-concept (Fragebogen zur Erfassung des stimmlichen Selbstkonzepts, FESS) is introduced. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Reliability and validity were tested with a sample of 308 student teachers. For external validity, the scales were

The Leeds scales for the self-assessment of anxiety and depression.

Self-rating scales are finding an increasing use in psychiatric work. Not only are they widely used in research, but they provide the clinician with a score indicating the patient's psychiatric state at any one time, and these scores if repeated throughout the duration of treatment may be considered to provide a continuing measure of the severity of the illness, as does a temperature chart in a febrile illness. Most scales could be improved by item analysis, and in this study the Wakefield Self-Assessment of Depression Inventory, with added items, was subjected to statistical analysis. It was

Intentional burn injury: Assessment of allegations of self-infliction.

This study investigates the question of whether there is evidence that suggests the possibility of self-infliction, or self-infliction by proxy, of burn injury among a group of asylum claimants in the UK who have attributed such injuries to torture, and how such evidence might be assessed. The question arose from the observations of doctors at the UK-based charity Freedom from Torture that increasing numbers of individuals from Sri Lanka who described a history of torture had suffered severe and disfiguring burn injuries from heated metal objects, and the suggestion from asylum decision-makers

Self-assessment of skin tightness severity by scleroderma patients.

AIMS: Skin tightness progression determines the severity and mortality of systemic sclerosis (SSc). The modified Rodnan skin score (mRSS) is a skin tightness assessment tool, albeit inter-physician variability is a limitation. Our objectives were to evaluate the correlation and agreement of skin tightness assessment between patient self-assessment and physician-assessment. METHODS: A descriptive study was conducted on the masked, self-assessments of mRSS (at week 0, 4 and 12) by 23 Thai adult SSc patients seen at Srinagarind Hospital, KhonKaen University, between March 2014 and February 2015.

A self-assessment efficacy tool for spermicide contraceptive users.

BACKGROUND: Easily accessible contraceptive methods, such as chemical and barrier methods, are used currently by approximately 1 in 6 women who use contraception in the United States. Even in the face of suboptimal effectiveness, coitally dependent methods likely will always have a role in fertility management. Because most contraceptive efficacy stratifications use population-based data, for women to make informed decisions about the individual fit of a contraceptive method, better evidence-based, user-friendly tools are needed. OBJECTIVES: Spermicides are a readily available, over-the count

Internet-based self-assessment after the Tsunami: lessons learned.

BACKGROUND: In the aftermath of the Tsunami disaster in 2004, an online psychological self-assessment (ONSET) was developed and made available by the University of Zurich in order to provide an online screening instrument for Tsunami victims to test if they were traumatized and in need of mental health care. The objective of the study was to report the lessons learnt that were made using an Internet-based, self-screening instrument after a large-scale disaster and to discuss its outreach and usefulness. METHODS: Users of the online self-assessment decided after finishing the procedure whether

Accuracy of Self-Assessment in Medical Student Communication Performance.

INTRODUCTION: Effective communication is a core competency in medical practice, supporting patient relationships, treatment adherence, and clinical outcomes. Developing both skills and confidence is a central goal of medical education. Self-assessment, guided reflection, and exemplar-based feedback are promising strategies to enhance competence and self-regulation. Yet, evidence on medical students' accuracy in self-evaluating communication remains limited. This study examined calibration of self-assessed communication performance, potential gender differences, impact of feedback strategies, a

Self-assessment of cochlear health by cochlear implant recipients.

Recent technological advances in cochlear implant (CI) telemetry have enabled, for the first time, CI users to perform cochlear health (CH) measurements through self-assessment for prolonged periods of time. This is important to better understand the influence of CH on CI outcomes, and to assess the safety and efficacy of future novel treatments for deafness that will be administered as adjunctive therapies to cochlear implantation. We evaluated the feasibility of using a CI to assess CH and examined patterns of electrode impedances, electrically-evoked compound action potentials (eCAPs) and e

Stability of self-esteem: assessment, correlates, and excuse making.

We examined stability and level of self-esteem as predictors of excuse making; the extent to which self-ratings of stability are related to a statistical index of self-esteem stability; and the relations between stability and certainty of self-esteem and a variety of other psychological constructs. Regarding excuse making, our findings indicated that for high self-esteem individuals, instability was related to greater excuse making following success, but not following failure. However, for low self-esteem individuals, instability was related to greater excuse making following failure, but not

Computer-assisted self-assessment in anaesthesia: a preliminary study.

Fifty-six anaesthetists participated in a trial of the use of microcomputers for self-assessment. Ninety-three per cent of the anaesthetists found the concept of computer-assisted self-assessment acceptable. The only significant difference in the scores achieved by different groups was found with a specialised intensive care program in which senior registrars had a higher average score than older consultants.
