Dioecy, the presence of separate sexes on distinct individuals, has evolved repeatedly in multiple plant lineages. However, the specific mechanisms by which sex systems evolve and their commonalities among plant species remain poorly understood. With both XY and ZW sex systems, the family Salicaceae provides a system to uncover the evolutionary forces driving sex chromosome turnovers. In this study, we performed a genome-wide association study to characterize sex determination in two Populus species, P. euphratica and P. alba. Our results reveal an XY system of sex determination on chromosome

Frogs are ideal organisms for studying sex chromosome evolution because of their diversity in sex chromosome differentiation and sex-determination systems. We review 222 anuran frogs, spanning ~220 Myr of divergence, with characterized sex chromosomes, and discuss their evolution, phylogenetic distribution and transitions between homomorphic and heteromorphic states, as well as between sex-determination systems. Most (~75%) anurans have homomorphic sex chromosomes, with XY systems being three times more common than ZW systems. Most remaining anurans (~25%) have heteromorphic sex chromosomes, w

Several hypotheses explain the prevalence of undifferentiated sex chromosomes in poikilothermic vertebrates. Turnovers change the master sex determination gene, the sex chromosome or the sex determination system (e.g. XY to WZ). Jumping master genes stay main triggers but translocate to other chromosomes. Occasional recombination (e.g. in sex-reversed females) prevents sex chromosome degeneration. Recent research has uncovered conserved heteromorphic or even homomorphic sex chromosomes in several clades of non-avian and non-mammalian vertebrates. Sex determination in sturgeons (Acipenseridae)

Sex chromosome dosage compensation (SCDC) overcomes gene-dose imbalances that disturb transcriptional networks, as when ZW females or XY males are hemizygous for Z/X genes. Mounting data from non-model organisms reveal diverse SCDC mechanisms, yet their evolution remains obscure, because most informative lineages with variable sex chromosomes are unstudied. Here, we discovered SCDC in turtles and an unprecedented thermosensitive SCDC in eukaryotes. We contrasted RNA-seq expression of Z-genes, their autosomal orthologues, and control autosomal genes in Apalone spinifera (ZZ/ZW) and Chrysemys pi

Caiman latirostris is a species with temperature dependent sex determination (TSD), which implies that the incubation temperature of the eggs is the main factor that determines the sex during a thermo-sensitive period (TSP). However, estrogens play a critical role in this process. The administration of 17β-estradiol (E2) previous to TSP overrides the effects of male incubation temperature, producing phenotypic females. This effect has been defined as sex reversal or estrogen-induced sex determination (E2SD). The aim of the present study is to describe similarities and differences in the effect

Gonads are very peculiar organs given their bipotential competence. Indeed, early differentiating genital ridges evolve into either of 2 very distinct organs: the testis or the ovary. Accumulating evidence now demonstrates that both genetic pathways must repress the other in order for the organs to differentiate properly, meaning that if this repression is disrupted or attenuated, the other pathway may completely or partially be expressed, leading to disorders of sex development. Among these disorders are the cases of XY male-to-female and XX female-to-male sex reversals as well as true hermap

Many teleost fishes are capable of sex change, and some species possess intersex gonads known as ovotestes, which contain both ovarian and testicular tissues. Uncovering the developmental processes in ovotestis formation is critical for elucidating the mechanisms of intersexuality in vertebrates. However, such developmental processes have been described in only a limited number of species. In this study, we examined the histological structure of juvenile gonads in the harlequin sandsmelt (Parapercis pulchella), a female-to-male sex-change fish in which mature females possess ovotestes. Juvenil

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: In flowering plants, hybridization is an important evolutionary force that might change sex distributions and sex determination systems (SDSs). However, little is known about processes in the first hybrid generations. Here, we study a cultivated putative hybrid cross of weeping willows (genus Salix, S.), S. alba × babylonica to gain insights into the effects of hybridization into SDSs.
METHODS: We analyzed the genetic structure of pure S. alba, pure S. babylonica, and the putative hybrid crosses in Central Europe using RADSeq data and five independent methods (NeighborN

Sex chromosomes are expected to play a role in shaping the transcriptional architecture of sexual dimorphism, through the direct expression of sex-linked genes, by regulating autosomal genes, or in interactions with hormones. Yet, their degree of involvement remains elusive partly because chromosomal sex (e.g. XX/XY) and gonadal sex (ovaries or testes) are usually inextricably intertwined. They are, however, dissociated in the African pygmy mouse, Mus minutoides, in which a feminizing X (X*) has evolved, resulting in three female genotypes (XX, XX*, and X*Y) and one male genotype (XY). Further

The identification of sex chromosomes is fundamental for exploring the mechanism and evolution of sex determination. Platichthys stellatus, a species exhibiting clear sexual dimorphism and homomorphic chromosome pairs, has received limited research concerning its sex determination mechanisms. Clarifying the sex chromosome of P. stellatus will enhance our understanding of sex chromosome evolution in Pleuronectiformes. This study employed whole-genome resequencing to investigate the sex chromosome and sex determination system in P. stellatus. Notably, Chr23 was identified as the sex chromosome i

Recently, concerns for species that sex differentiation is influenced by temperature in the context of global warming have increased because disrupted operational sex ratios could threaten population maintenance. In contrast, little attention has been given to the reproductive ability of populations that experienced elevated temperatures. In this study, we demonstrated that high temperature (HT) would decrease population size via three different aspects of reproductive ability for the first time. We show that, in a thermo-sensitive teleost yellow catfish, a short period of HT (+3 °C) exposure

Sex-determination systems are highly variable amongst vertebrate groups, and the prevalence of genomic data has greatly expanded our knowledge of how diverse some groups truly are. Gecko lizards are known to possess a variety of sex-determination systems, and each new study increases our knowledge of this diversity. Here, we used RADseq to identify male-specific markers in the banded gecko Coleonyx brevis, indicating this species has a XX/XY sex-determination system. Furthermore, we show that these sex-linked regions are not homologous to the XX/XY sex chromosomes of two related Coleonyx speci

Groupers are widely distributed in tropical and subtropical areas worldwide, are key species to coastal ecosystems, and valuable fishery targets. To facilitate artificial seed production technology for grouper aquaculture, the mechanisms of reproduction and gonad development are being elucidated for these important species. In addition, since groupers are sexually dimorphic fish with female-first maturity (protogynous hermaphrodite fish), research is being conducted to clarify the ecological mechanism of sex change and their reproductive physiology, focusing on the endocrine system. In recent

In biology, variation is the norm, not the exception. This particularly holds true for the concepts of sex and sex determination, which we refer to here as biology of sex. Unfortunately, biology of sex topics are often taught using oversimplified content, situating sex as a simple, genetically determined binary, and that mammals are the predominant model for biology of sex across organisms. Teaching using these oversimplifications leads students to develop a limited understanding of biology of sex topics, which limits their capacity as future researchers and also harmfully and erroneously supp

In angiosperms, dioecy has evolved thousands of times, and the pathways underlying the required floral changes are therefore expected to exhibit diversity as well as parallelism. Here we investigate Itoa orientalis, a dioecious Salicaceae in which immature flowers are bisexual, but the stamens or pistils then abort. This contrasts with the floral development in dioecious species of Populus and Salix, which lack any morphologically bisexual stage. A haplotype-resolved Itoa genome assembly revealed an XY system of sex determination with a sex-determining region (SDR) spanning ∼6 Mb and encompass

Sex determination in Porifera remains one of the least understood aspects of early metazoan biology despite the group's key phylogenetic position. Sponges display exceptional diversity in sexual systems-ranging from stable gonochorism to sequential hermaphroditism and sex reversal-yet lack morphological dimorphism and any discrete gonadal structures, blurring the boundary between sex determination and gametogenesis. Here we synthesize current knowledge on sexual systems, environmental and genetic influences on sexual fate, and the evolutionary origins of sexual systems in sponges. Evidence for

Sex-related differences in mortality are widespread in the animal kingdom. Although studies have shown that sex determination systems might drive lifespan evolution, sex chromosome influence on aging rates have not been investigated so far, likely due to an apparent lack of demographic data from clades including both XY (with heterogametic males) and ZW (heterogametic females) systems. Taking advantage of a unique collection of capture-recapture datasets in amphibians, a vertebrate group where XY and ZW systems have repeatedly evolved over the past 200 million years, we examined whether sex he

In humans, the choice between male or female development is genetically determined. Sex determination occurs as the undifferentiated and bipotential embryonic gonad becomes either testes or ovary. This process is influenced by the action of genes that have been discovered by genetics studies of sex-reversed patients, XY females, XX males, and XX true hermaphrodites. The development of the gonad is better known in males than in females. SRY, a gene located on the Y chromosome, triggers a complex genetic cascade leading to testicular development. Other genes such as DAX1, located on the X chromo

Spinibarbus caldwelli is a commercially significant aquaculture species in China that exhibits pronounced sexual dimorphism in growth-related traits. However, identifying sex based on morphological characteristics remains challenging before sexual maturation, necessitating the development of sex-specific molecular markers for sex-controlled breeding. In this study, whole-genome resequencing was performed on 50 individuals (25 females and 25 males) with an average sequencing depth of 10.05×. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) identified 140 loci significantly associated with sex, all locate
